I have head screen burn can happen within hours?

    • +13

I have heard sun burn can happen within minutes?

      • +3

Since we are sharing facts, I have heard that real burn from fire can happen within seconds

        • -1

I have heard that virtual burns are just as severe as real burns?

        • Mmmn and some farts can burn a bit as well :)

    • +4

Any type of emissive display can burn in. As far as how likely it is to happen during its lifetime, proportionally it seems low. In a few hours? I'd say a strong no to that.

Apparently the new 2017 models are much better at mitigating this. They have a cleaning cycle they automatically do when the TV is in standby.

    • +4

Iv'e sold hundreds since the first FHD models and not one have I seen with burn in (Including the display units that run 24/7 for a year). Its Samsung marketing tactics as they decided to continue on with LED LCD and lost the game basically. Hence SONY/PANA and LG do OLED's

      • +19

I've sold monorails to Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook, and, by gum, it put them on the map!

      • +1

That's interesting because if you go to HN and look at OLED phones and smart watches, you can clearly see burn in on demo units.

        • You should see the glow from the samsung lcd's it lights up like xmas on the top and bottom where led's are.. my ks8000 has a distinct glow to it lol. My next screen will be an oled.

        • +1

@solidussnake: That's edge lighting tech. You can get LCD screens with more LEDs for a bit more uniformity and it improves the dark scenes.

It's no substitute for OLED of course, but it's also significantly cheaper. There will be much better OLED in the years to come, so you might end up feeling like someone who bought a PS4 when the Pro came out.

Still, if you can get OLED 55" for $2000 it's not a bad price. Unfortunately for me, 55" isn't big enough. And 65" is a huge increase in price over 55", and an astronomical leap in price over 65" LCD.

I'm after 75" and they don't do OLED 75. At least not in Aust. So that's off the table. But even 65" is not at a price I can justify, so I'm just waiting for a deal on a good LCD 75", around $3000.

I heard that it is a tv

    • I have head also.

      • +3

        Do you give also?

  • -2

On youtube Sydney hifi have a video about it.

    • +1

Can you link it? There is a thing called image retention, which displays exactly the same as burn-in. The difference is burn-in is permanent, while image retention fades away after minutes/hours depending on the severity.

As I said, burn in is a possibility, but seemingly only in extreme cases.

      • How can oled phones ( latest iPhone X and pixel) have burn in issues and oled tvs don't, any reason?

        • +1

They can get burn in - kind of like a plasma TV did in the past. I guess phones are much more prone because by nature they have static images on them all the time (icons and such) and have to be much brighter. TVs generally have moving elements of the screen, which facilitates the pixels to change instead of displaying the same thing continuously (which is the cause of burn in - basically uneven wearing of pixels).

        • OLED TVs run a compensation cycle when on standby that prevents burn-in.

        • @Captain Howdy: we don't have any burn in on our old Panasonic plasma, I'm guess the problem was the early generations.

I just bought a decent led tv a few weeks back Sony 9000, oled still a bit expensive and scared about reliability ( I keep the TVs for ten years or more)

        • +1

          @PVA:

I actually have a last gen Panasonic plasma too, with no burn in either. I guess this just demonstrates that how the panel is used will largely dictate whether these problems crop up. I think the same can be said for OLED - though they have a far less battle tested history than plasma.

        • +1

@Captain Howdy: I still have Panasonic st50 plasma tv. No burn in. Images are fantastic as ever. I will only replace it with an oled.

        • @carlJack:

Nice! I have have a ST60. They are beauts. OLED does seem like the logical step, I agree.

        • @Captain Howdy:
          @carlJack:
I've got the Panasonic VT55 (Made in Japan), 6 years later still dumbstruck by it's picture quality. No burn in nor glitches, will run it till it gracefully passes away, then the silent transition to OLED…

        • @Captain Howdy: I've never had burn in on my own OLED phones, but display models definitely have it, and they always have video running on them when left alone for a few seconds, so it shouldn't be static images.

        • @Captain Howdy:
Mine would be more than 10 years old, black, I thought were ok, compared to the new tv, pretty poor.
Mine is so old it's not even fullHD, it's the old 1024 × 768 . Yes well over due to be replaced, but still works well and didn't have the heart to pitch it out.
It's now in the playroom with a retropie and PS4 connected.

        • I've been using an OLED TV for 3 years without burn-in. Really nothing to worry about.

  • Looks like these models finally trickled down to our stores after all the huff they would be CostCo exclusives.

If they're widely adopted as Australian stock, these could drop close to $2000.

EDIT: it might be worth confirming if this is the standard B7, or the B7A that doesn't have Dolby Atmos support.

    • +1

      Didn't know there was distinctions.

If it's the Australian model, which Bing Lee also stocks, it should have Dolby Atmos. They list in under their specifications.

      • Ah there we go, second confirmation of a B7T model with Atmos. Fantastic, as it's kinda dumb to be buying a top-of-the-line panel that doesn't support top-of-the-line audio.

  • +1

I dont know we have B7 in Australia.

  • +10

    Always 55" deals never 65" :'(

  • +2

4K OLED 55" getting so close to under $2k!

  • Is this UHD?

    • +1

Yep. UHD effectively means 4K resolution.

      • -1

I've heard that 4k is more prone to burn in then UHD?

  • Jump in now or wait till CES 2018….

    • +2

2018 is going to be a "tock" year so, while this deal is highly tempting, I'm going to ask you to remain vigilant and wait til next year!
edit: also prices may come down even further next year according to this https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/LG-Display-to-boo…

      • This deal with 81 votes, 869 clicks, and only 4 purchases, it seems people may indeed be holding off.

        • One thing I'm slightly worried about is whether LG might decide in 2018 to abandon the "all models have the same picture quality" rule. Maybe they made some progress with the hardware and decide to only put those new improvements in the higher end models? Hopefully not. My wallet can only take about $2250, and even that's pushing it, so I really need the bottom of the range model to give me a good picture :)

      • Correction: "tick" not "tock" (edit period expired).

  • +1

This is absolutely an amazing deal.

  • +4

For those that are not aware. LG scored some key OLED patents off Kodak which helped them rule the OLED TV market. Kodak devised a more simple way to make OLED TVs, and also less prone to aging issues and burn in that Samsung are trying to scare us with.

Instead of having Red Green and Blue OLED sub pixels, LG OLED panels have White OLED sub pixels with colour filters over them and an extra white (WRGB).

As you might of heard the blue OLED material tends to age faster and so you can end up with off colours the older the OLED screen gets. Not such an issue for the LG with only white OLEDS. Yes it's possible to get screen burn with the LG panels. But unlikely with regular use (ie not left on all day with stupid logos in the one spot or shop displays with a static image for example.)

  • -1
    • Only a small handful of customers. It's not the norm though. (And looks more like a faulty panel then screen Burn in that Instance)

    • +1

That's really odd. After a few hours? It seems like a defective panel more than anything. Most everyone in the comments agrees.

Also, that's a panel from two generations ago now I think, going by the uploaders comments. With every iteration the problem should become less and less likely.

    • +1

But at least you will have a new TV

My wife also suffers from Burn in remembering shit that happened 10 years go.

        • +2

The new model… not so much :)

        • +2

The mute button is broken on mine

  • +1

Just a heads up for people; from what I've heard LG will be using the B7 to replace the C7 (at least in the 55" model) until they release new TVs next year. This should mean that most retailers will get them, and pre-Christmas sales should give great prices (not that ~$2200 for an OLED isn't already great!)

    • +1

This price is already below what this B7 version goes for in the US (exclusively through CostCo).

Over there, they are getting the B7A for around $1850 on sale, but that model comes without Dolby Atmos. Yes this will get cheaper, but IMO no lower than $2000 without getting into a clearance scrap at your local store.

If you're waiting for bottom of the market, pull the trigger @ $2100, at which time you'll probably have some idea of what the 2018 model will be (there's some indication they will use TADF emitters, which theoretically means a price drop and a power efficiency gain).

  • Anyone purchased from Videopro before? How are they as a retailer?

  • Is Sony KD70X6700E at Vidoepro for $2697 delivered a good buy ?

  • What happens if you're not home to collect large items such as this?
I only need to furnish an apartment, so loads of stuff to buy. Doubt the post office would hold a fridge on my behalf?

    • +1

Redelivery once for free I believe. Otherwise it needs to be picked up from the depot

  • +1

These guys take forever to ship (four business days and counting since payment). Buyer beware.

    • That is why I didn't go for it. The estimated delivery was for 1/4 of December.

Even checking now it is: Tue. 12 Dec. and Thu. 14 Dec

Got a good feeling about this Friday and the C7!

    • I sent a message yesterday asking the delivery time to my post code.

I got back a message telling me to read the delivery dates on ebay.

Needless to say I rocked up to JB HiFi today, offered $2300 and brought it locally.

Fookin nice TV and the TVOS works really well. Wow the picture is just so fluid. Very pleased.
