Props to Dell for their sleek design.

  • 8920 Doesn't look like it does multiple monitors? There appears to be just one HDMI port on the back. That's a deal breaker for me. I have 3.
I also like to run lots of hard drives.
Otherwise I'd jump on this. My current machine is 6.5 years old and dying.

      Maybe get a HDMI splitter

      • That won't work you'll just get the same thing on three screens…

Something looks wrong… The pictures of the 8920 both here and on the Dell site show the stock model (with no 1060/1070 GPU installed) but it should be. I/O for the 1060 will be as in this video. Seems to have 3x DP, 1x HDMI and 1x DVI on the GPU (can use DVI->HDMI or DP->HDMI adapters for the second and third monitors).

      • Thanks. Yeah I went onto Youtube and took a look at an unboxing video.

I'm still tempted but the case is so crowded I doubt I could add the other 2 hard drives and I'd be worried about overheating as well. Especially with the 1070. And I'd likely need to replace the power supply.

It's a real shame. I've had dramas with my PC since last night. I literally spent between about 11:30 and 2pm last night then between 7 and 8 this morning getting my computer back up and running.

Was playing Civ 5 (or trying to learn to play rather). Suddenly both the monitors connected to one of my two 560ti video cards dies. Reboot doesn't fix it. So I pulled it out assuming it had finally died. I've been getting buzzing from the fans of the 560 for months. So anyway I pull out the card and then the SB X-Fi starts squealing anytime I try to connect speakers. Device manager shows the IRQL conflict on the X-Fi and trying to uninstall blue screens twice and then again in safe mode. So I ripped out the X-fi and went with the onboard audio. This morning I reinstalled the 560ti and it works!

Worked out why it was buzzing too. Turns out the bone of the posts connecting the fan casing onto the video card are broken. And I broke another last night, so only 2 holding on now. I have a piece of an old coax cable wedged in to stop the card buzzing.

So yeah I think 6.5 years is enough for this baby. It served me well. Buying a 2600K, 16GB RAM, a decent MB and good case fans made it last that long. (I have replaced the system drive twice though. Still great considering it's almost always on and acts as a file server too). Time to retire it before it goes to the big data center in the sky.

        • It says in the description that it can take "Up to 4 total 3 HDD/1 SSD; ODD" and cooling should be plenty (judging by others' experiences with temperatures etc). No need at all to replace the power supply - the 1070 model is supposed to have the 460W supply which is more than enough.

EDIT: On second thought, may get a bit toasty for the HDDs in there if you want to be safe.

        • @donnot:

I have 6 x 2GB Hard disks. The system drive has been replaced twice. The rest have been going since 2011 without any problems and SMART data still showing them as good. There are 2 dedicated fans - one blowing on each bank of 3.

So yeah, this is SO close but not quite what I need. Also I'd be forced to buy 8GB drives to match what I already have and add a little. (I'm running out of room). That about doubles the cost of the storage vs 4GB.

        • @syousef:

Ah, might just be worth upgrading the GPU for now of your current system (and if that doesn't help, at least you can re-use it in a new one!) Can be crazy how many external issues a GPU can cause.

        • @donnot:

Yeah thanks for your input. Really appreciated it.

But it's a bit like an old car when it reaches that point where the repairs start costing too much. I expect the disks to die soon. Graphics card can be replaced for a second hand one for about $60 but that's $60 I'd rather put into another machine. Plus used gear will have a shorter life. And the moment motherboard or CPU die it gets expensive.

Damn I wish I could stay on Win 7 though.

I'm running triple monitors at work with the 8920.

      • hi plmko, just wondering how you connect the monitors into this PC and if the monitors quality are vastly different between HDMI connection and the other ports? I need only 2 monitors for home but this one has only 1 HDMI port…

  • which is the better buy in terms of CPU and GPU? Intel vs AMD?

    • depends on the price bracket, both brands have great cpus. same deal with gpus

    • +1

      CPU:
If you're a developer, engineer, or doing anything else multi-threaded: AMD
If you're a gamer (and not bottlenecked by the GPU): Intel

      GPU:
At this price bracket, the RX570 is better bang-for-buck.
If you want to go more high-end, Nvidia is really your only choice.

      • @idonotknowwhy your recommendations for doing engineering work and also gaming using the one PC (AMD or Intel) ?

        • +2

          That's pretty much me. AMD.
Edit: AMD cpu, probably a nvidia gpu to go with it if you're going to do any ML

        • @idonotknowwhy: Thank you !

    Does it worth?

    • +2

      Does it even?

  • Can anyone recommend a desktop under $1000?

ryzen 9 threadripper has recently come to market. dell already has an optiplex workstation announced with ryzen 9. i would expect prices to fall for 5 and 7 systems - since 9 offers some significant features like enhanced pcie lanes

    • +2

They're aimed at different demographics though, so there's little reason for the 3/5/7 to shift in price purely due to the launch of threadripper at the very high end, well beyond what the majority of users buy.

Word of warning, expect Dell to ship this on the very last day of the estimated shipping window.
I'm still waiting for my Ryzen 5 box which I ordered on November 7th.
If you get the Ryzen 5 desktop, there's a great forum thread about it here, which discusses mods/upgrades and will probably discuss bugs/fixes when they finally ship.

I often build gaming/workstation computers for friends and cannot stress enough the value for money from this deal

    • But you can build a better machine yourself for less! /s
