iPhone X 64GB - $99/Mo over 24mo Plus $100 Credit in Month 2. Includes 5GB/Mo and Unlimited Phone/SMS/MMS - Virgin Mobile

210

The new iPhone X is not for everyone, but if you do want it then it's quite expensive so I've been looking around for the best deal and I reckon this is it. Total cost over 24mo is $2,276 after the $100 credit so you are effectively paying $29/mo for this plan after the $1,579 RRP for the iPhone. The agents on Live Chat have been hinting that there is a different deal coming in December but no idea if it'll be a better deal or a worse deal… it'll just be different.

Note: There is a back order of up to 8 weeks.

Thanks for the deal, good work.

But, nowadays, upgrading iPhone reminds me those old days of upgrading Nokias, don’t feel any real differences.

    • i kind of agree.. this is the least exciting iphone upgrade ever. but my old phone is beat up and needs to be replaced, so i figure i may as well get the latest one. if it was an exciting upgrade i'd be buying it on a big plan with telstra!

      • Yeah, that is another issue with Apple, you can only upgrade to new system than going backward, which means they keep make new system complicated so that you have to get a new one

        • Actually i disagree since i went back to an iphone 4 since i lost my 5s and i upgraded to ios 11 and it works surprisingly well. i can do most basic stuff on it but sometimes it's a little slow but what can you expect from a single core phone

        • @s3n:

Surely you're being sarcastic? iOS 11 is only compatible with iPhone 5s and higher.

        • @moey187: Sorry it's 10.3.3 I thought it was 11 but hey it's not bad - I just bought a 6S plus to replace it though

upgrading iPhone reminds me those old days of upgrading Nokias

Except your new Nokia was smaller than the old one.

    • for many generations iPhones looked the same and from an outside perspective it really didn't looked like it changed. But my old iphone 6 is now struggling with day to day tasks, an upgrade to 8 would feel very different while still looking like a brick

I don't get the value of some of these plans. You can go to Apple, buy the iPhone X on an interest free payment plan for $1500. $1500 / 18 = $83. Then jump onto Optus' 25% off deal. You can then get 3GB for $22 a month of 15GB for $30 a month. Over 24 months you end up paying $1500 + $720 and totalling $2220. You can probably get away with cheaper using another carrier and prepaid.

    • +3

Where did you get the 18 months 0% interest? On the apple website, it's 12 months given that you own one of 5 credit cards which I assume has an annual fee.

      • +1

Ah, maybe it's only 18 months on Mac products. Weird, would have thought iPhone X also applied due to its high price tag.

    • +2

didn't know apple provided a interest free payment plan?

      • +13

When you get interest free, you knows you have been overcharged.

  • Don’t think this is a great deal unless you can’t afford to buy the phone outright.
As you said, it means you’re effectively paying $29 a month for 2.5gb of data. And you can get 15gb of data for $30pm on a 12 month contract with Optus.
Or even 20gb data for about $40pm (incl. value of GC) from Telstra via the seemingly more and more frequent JB Hi-Fi deals.
Virgin doesn’t incorporate any student or education discounts and doesn’t really offer perks comparable to Telstra Thanks or Optus Perks.
And being locked to 24m c.f. 12 months is a big difference. Especially given how quickly plans have evolved over the past few months. Data is getting cheaper and cheaper.
I would strongly reccomend steering away from this.
You’d be better off buying an iPhone X outright if you’ve got the capital. And buying a good plan alongside.
Might even be able to get it cheaper via Amex cashback at HN or an eBay / upcoming Amazon deal / via TRS. Aren’t really any stock issues as there’s only a 3-4 week wait. Should be in stock most places by the end of the year.

Edit: per above comment could even purchase via interest free payments from Apple.

    Just a heads up.
You can add a mobile data pack/additional SIM and they give us extra data for the entirety of your plan.
After the first month, you cancel the addition service and still keep the additional data.
I added a 30 bucks pre-paid data sim. Paid 30 bucks the first month and cancelled straight after….
Now I get an addition 3GB added to my data allowance for 24 months ;-)

    Hope this helps.

  • The face recognition is a bit like a Segway: lots of awesome but expensive tech going to solve a problem that was not really there in the first place.

AMOLED is great at last. But Even Nokia had AMOLED screens before they got bought by Microsoft.

The multi-tasking gesture is really silly too.

You swipe up from the bottom of the screen, and then hold your thumb for half a second before the phone knows that you're trying to access the app switcher.

      • Was that GIF made by a newb? You swipe up and then to right, its instant. try it in the apple store.

        • uh, didn't know that. I had asked the at the Apple store and store person suggested using AssistiveTouch, which was recommended when I asked how to access control center without having to swipe from the top right. Too used to Android nowadays

      • +2

Nah I have an iPhone X and multitasking is great. You only need to do the above if you need to force quit an app. Otherwise you can literally just swipe along the bottom which is crazy efficient.
You shouldn’t need to force quit apps because most programmers say leaving apps open doesn’t affect battery life or processing power. They just go into stasis and go live again when you go into. Some people argue closing apps and reopening again is worse for battery life as you have to boot the app up again from nothing.
The only problem is some apps are still a bit buggy and they crash which means you have to force quit it. That’s a pain.

    • +4

Yes Touch ID worked great, but Face ID isn’t there necessarily to solve a problem that didn’t exist. The problem it solved was removing the home button allowing the screen to be bezelless and make the most of the real estate.

      • +1

Competitors solved that long ago by moving the fingerprint sensor to the back of the phone. Works fine.
I'm happy with the gesture unlock on my old Motorola, which is almost as fast.

What Apple has done is very impressive from an engineering viewpoint. But I think they are struggling to find new value for the consumer, that isn't already there from Samsung etc. No criticism, its just a maturing market.

        • +3

I guess it's just a different approach to solving that problem. I personally don't like having it moved to the back but maybe it's just personal bias. You're right, they wanted to find a way to set themselves apart. Solving the problem without copying precedent.

      • Apple Pay with Face ID seems like a step backward. You need to double click the button, look at the phone, then do the tap.

I get Apple clearly shows they can do better Face ID than Samsung. However, is it really the right way forward? Other than Samsung, most of the Android manufacturers didn't give a damn about face unlock. If you have a smartwatch, smart unlock is already there (and you don't need to look at the phone). Likewise for unlocking the phone in a car with bluetooth support.

It seems general public are quite happy with what Apple decided to do. The removal of headphone jack, home button. I am not looking forward to the time when I have to replace my iPhone.

        • +1

huh? this makes no sense. It's also much more intuitive than you'd expect. The phone is always set to raise to wake, so you just need to pick it up to look at it; or can just tap the screen when it's off to activate it. It's as fast or faster than Touch ID. The only negative implications of it are:

          • e.g. if I'm in bed and half my face is on the pillow, I have to lift up my head lol.
          • there is a 'higher security' mode which requires you to be looking at the phone. This doesn't work with sunglasses which is a pain so I turned it off.
          • You can't get into your phone if it's on your desk just by laying your finger on it. you have to physically pick it up. But you'd have to do this anyway if the sensor was on the back. It doesn't take long to get into the habit of this.

Apple comes under a lot of public scrutiny for doing things things like removing the headphone jack, but to be honest, I think that the other technology companies are glad that Apple did so that they didn't have to cop the blow to their image. It was an obvious step to free up real estate inside the phone and bluetooth headsets are becoming more ubiquitous. The presence of wireless charging now means charging + using the prot simultaneously is slightly less of an issue. Other people have followed suit in removing the headphone jack; and removing the home button was just their own solution for creating real estate on the front screen. Apple has always been good at having a user friendly, intuitive device and software. The solutions they put in place to replace the home button are pretty straight forward when you get used to it.

        • @ts13: I was referring to Apple Pay with Face ID.

Headphone jack, if Apple put in another lightning port on iPhone, then I am fine with it being removed. Apple did not remove it from Macbook Pro (why didn't they? replace it with lightning port come on).

Free up real estate in the phone has been proven not to be true. Wireless charging… let's not go there. So the removal of headphone jack means you need to get a wireless charging pad and bluetooth headset?

I have a few Apple devices and frankly, I am not impressed with the need to get dongles for my Macbook Pro (and it was a waste of time because I had the do some research to avoid getting rubbish ones). The removal of magsafe??? And Apple is smart to avoid selling Apple branded USB-3 to USB-C cables/dongles (they only sell 3rd party ones). What happened to "it just works"? Getting 4K through USB-C to HDMI cable requires a slight tweak. All those great little goodies the old Macbook Pro had and made PC users jealous got taken out in the current gen Macbook Pro. I am seeing this being done on iPhone.

Like I mentioned, most people are fine with Apple's decisions.

  • If only a handful of people taking this offer, sure VM will have to improve it, offer better deals. I have multiple services with VM and always on their plans, but this time as they are no deals.

    I have a 256GB X with Telstra for $119 a month (i'm lucky enough to get a $20 discount) 20GB data unlimited etc. I would've bought outright if I couldn't get a plan cheaper than outright+BYO.

    • +1

How did you manage that? I'd be interested.

      • guessing must have scored it through Amway telstra? I recontracted my telstra plan through Telstra Amway and Im now paying the $99.20 a month for 75GB data + 2GB international data when I travel oh and the Note 8 included.

      • +1

Basically before the launch of an iPhone you can contact live chat and ask for a valued customer discount to be noted on your account knowing you'll be recontracting when it comes out. Usually it's a $10 per month discount but if you're lucky it'll be a $20. My previous 7 Plus was $10 but a few days before the X launch i negotiated $20 prior to the plans being released.

Really depends on the person you talk to and your account with them. I know some of the guys on whirlpool who have been able to get $30 on even higher plans but it depends on if they mess up in the past.

But yeah, Telstra on paper seems expensive but if you have the patience you can get a good deal.

    • Is this leased or you own it outright after 24 months?

  • I pity the souls who will will be stuck with whoregin for 2 years.

  • Manage to get iPhone X 256GB, 12GB data per mo, 10GB bonus (which im hoping i can gift/transfer to the another account), unmetred spotify, etc for $109 per mo 24 mo contract with VIrginmob. Hows this?

  • -1

i would rather buy the phone outright and then buy 6 x 28day "plan" from amaysim with 2gb data per month for $15.

  • Cheaper to buy outright and go on a cheap BYO plan
