    a) Yes, these sound better than your Kogan trashphones or your gaming headset
    b) No, if you have half decent midfi cans then these aren't the planars you are looking for
    c) Yes, an amp will help you get the most out of them. Don't try driving planars with your phone.
    d) No, you can't wear these at work. They are open backed, which means they leak sound everywhere
    e) Yes, these will be good for your doof doof trash
    f) No, if you listen to anything with treble these probably aren't something to buy without listening first
    g) Yes, these will fall apart in a slight breeze
    h) Yes, this is a good price
    i) Yes, I am especially handsome

    • +1 for the doof doof trash.

    • You are right, the QC of this can is a joke

    • -1

      b) No, if you have half decent midfi cans then these aren't the planars you are looking for

Eh? It depends on the sound that you want

      c) Yes, an amp will help you get the most out of them. Don't try driving planars with your phone.

They work ok with an iPhone

      f) No, if you listen to anything with treble these probably aren't something to buy without listening first

Listen to them first applies equally for any music. I would be more concerned about bass than trebbile on these.

      g) Yes, these will fall apart in a slight breeze

Eh? They are not portable headphones. For headphones that are lying down or sit on a stand, and used at home sitting down they are durable enough.

      i) Yes, I am especially handsome

      Fabio? Are you back?!

  • Hoping eBay will have another 15% off site wide….so we can stack the discounts.

    • I didn't think you could stack coupon codes on eBay.

      • You can't stack codes, but this is already discounted by Hifiman.
P5OZZIE gives you 5% but I was hoping for more…

        • By the time that 15% off eBay comes along this 51% off deal by Hifiman might likely be over. So i would take this deal while you can.

        • @hollykryten: do you know how long would the 51% would run for?

        • @congngo:

It's the Hifiman Black Friday sale https://store.hifiman.com/index.php/black-friday-sale-2017 but it would probably only run for a few more days. And this is their notice on Facebook about the sale but it doesn't say exactly how long it goes for, just that it started on November 15 US time. https://www.facebook.com/HiFiMANElectronics/photos/a.4043981…

Altough their Black Friday sale during 2015 stated on November 23 until November 30 US time and only lasted 7 days. https://pooraudiophile.com/2015/11/hifi-man-black-friday-cyb…

So i'm guessing this 2017 sale will likely also last 7 days. And since it started on November 15 US time which was 3/4 of a week ago then it's likely only to last a few more days. So yeah by the time another eBay 15% off coupon comes along this Hifiman Black Friday sale will be already over. Take that 51% off by Hifiman and then the 5% off that by eBay while you can.

        • @hollykryten: Ok. I think you are right.
Just wanted to try these out before I pull the trigger.
Any other headphones that have the same SQ?

  • For this money id go with a pair of fidelios

Different model, but I have the hifiman 400s and they're pretty average in all aspects, and uncomfortable to boot

    • Interesting, InnerFidelity rated the 400s pretty damn high - it's on their "Wall of Fame"

This relatively inexpensive planar magnetic headphone punches way above its weight class. In fact, I found it to be modestly superior to the Sennheiser HD 600/650, delivering a more present mid-range and tighter bass. Bassheads be warned: This headphone does lack some bass extension. Fortunately a swapping with other pads available from HiFiMAN make significant improvements to the low notes.

While lacking a bit in the bass department, the HE400S delivers a marvelously balanced mid-range…and that's where most of the music is. Deeee-licious! Treble is ever so slightly splashy (never harsh, though), but I do find its transient response cleaner than the HD 600, thereby delivering slightly better imaging.

Yup, that's why I got the 400s and they just don't live up to that review. Maybe if I didn't have the X2's I'd be more impressed, but i clearly have my favourites. My 400s are now on Gumtree

        • Ah right, they were also on the wall…

    • You probably are in need of a better headphone amp.

      • using a Fiio X5 II / E12 portable amp combo

Compared to the Fidelios there is no soundstage and TBH i cant find any redeeming qualities about the 400s. I too read the reviews, how the sound is supposedly a touch warmer but less planar compared to the 400i. But for all the reviews saying how great they are i just dont enjoy them when i can put on the fidelios.

Anyone interested in buying my 400s to prove me wrong, send me a PM ;)

        • I am a bass head. 400i should have substantially better bass than the Phillips X2? Do you have both 400 and X2?
Planars were meant to have substantially better bass?

        • Planers are supposedly to have a distinct 'Planar sound' characteristic due to the technique used in reproducing sound, e.g. Thin membrane which vibrates using tiny magnetic fields throughout it, as opposed to the standard vibrating cone technique. This supposedly creates a "quicker" sound, also due tot the membrane being so thin, it should give the feeling of the headphones being totally open.

In reality, if you want to get proper Planar you need to spend more. These Hifimans are really El Cheapo planars with cheap feeling plastic and so so sound.

On other hand I like the bass on the X2's, it has a slight V shaped sound signature to start with. To really feel the bass I crank up the eq and they handle it well and cleanly. I think there are probably better bass head specific cans out there, the sennheisers have a good rep for this.
