It has a "freebie" tag, but isn't a freebie, you obviously have to order something to get the free shipping.

    • +3

The shipping is free that is what the deal is for, it saves you paying for the postage which you would have had to pay if you were going to use hop shop go.

you obviously have to order something to get the free shipping.

You have to use electricity and internet to get any freebie here so does that mean that no freebie should be listed as free?

      • That's not a freebie mate! Electricity, internet(and our heartbeat consumes energy=money) but it has nothing to do with freebies!

      • +1

        Edit: Original post removed.

Perhaps the OP should make it clear that this isn't an online store but a shipping service? That would clear up a lot of confusion.

      • also …i have never seen a freebie with a service fee

    • I agree, it's more of a discount than a freebie. But I'll let this one pass … haha.

  • $28/kg shipping??? No thanks! ;)

[edit] Ignore me, I thought it was a flat rate/kg, sorry!

  • friggin awesome!

  • I wonder if this includes the ShipToMe option?

    http://www.hopshopgo.com/hsg/help-rates-shipforme.do?l=en&c=…

    • Yes that is what the free shipping is for.

  • GREAT!

  • Just in time. Dollar is starting to dive, its down to 97.5c

  • they seem to have hidden fees. so with the free shipping you still have to pay insurance and freight charges. is this correct?

    • +2

Serious? I already put an order on Amazon.com for a book to test this shipping thingy out … All I expect is to pay AUD 9 …

Edit: 0.65% of total bill for insurance cost. That's OK …

Edit #2: There's some fuel surcharge of 8.5%? This is the first and last time I dabble in mail forwarding.

      • 8.5% Fuel surcharge applies only to the shipping cost. So won't work out too much more

    • You need to pay insurance but nothing else

  • Only $4 for every half kg extra so worth buying up!

Your Free Shipping Waiver has been reserved for you!

Shop and deliver to your HopShopGo U.S. Address and ship before 31st December, 2010 and we’ll take the first kg charge off your shipping bill.

    A saving of US$28.00.

    FAQ

What if my shipping is more than one kg?
You’ll be charged at HopShopGo’s rate of US$4.00 per additional 0.5 kg (based on shipping rate to Australia), and since you pay with your PayPal, enjoy a further 10% discount.

Can I shop with more than one store and combine my purchases to ship together?
    Yes, you can.

    • Ah, that's better than the flat $28/kg I thought it was! ;)

Mind you, lucky it's free coz that first kg is pretty darn steep IMHO! :p

      • Mind you, lucky it’s free coz that first kg is pretty darn steep IMHO! :p

That is generally how shipping works.

There is a flat fee for the first amount of weight which covers the freight overheads and other costs and then a fee per extra amount of weight

        • True, but it's generally not $28 for the first kg most places…well, except for ShoppingSquare! ;)

        • True, but it’s generally not $28 for the first kg most places…well, except for ShoppingSquare! ;)

It is not $28 for the first kg with HopShopGo, their first weight is 500 grams which is about $25.

You are getting the first 500g weight/fee for free and then an extra 500 grams for free.

$25 for the first kg is cheap for international shipping.
It will be much more expensive if you walked into an American DHL/FedEx office

        • +1

@Anthony, I don't happen to think $25 shipping is particularly good for a 500g item, but each to their own I suppose! I order heaps of stuff from OS & never pay that unless it's a significantly heavier item!

Either way, that's just my personal opinion. I don't pretend to be right, that's just where I stand on the matter! ;)

FWIW, you & I both know that there is a substantial difference between walking into any freight company and shipping a discrete item, and the bulk rate that large companies get! :p

  • hell yeah! makes it worth it having the 28 bucks off. Without it, hopshopgo is overpriced :p

  • Do they have sales tax where this forwarder is based?

    • I don't think so; they're based in Oregon.

      • Sweet, yep no sales tax in oregon.

    • No

  • This is awesome. You can usually get most stuff shipped to HopShopGo for free from any american retailer and now even get it forwarded for free!

  • -2

Had a look and you still have to pay the $32.50 service fee.

    • I wouldn't be surprised if the 2000 orders have been made, this thing seems to be global, and 2k isn't very much.

      • +1

No, when you click the link it takes you to a counter of remaining spots from the 2000. There were still 16xx spots when I did it 20 min ago.

The shipping and service fees are separate. You pay the service fee regardless.

Edit: I think the service fee is 10%, didn't bother checking with different items.

        • yeah sorry, missed the link, my bad.

    • $32.50 Service fee ? .
That would make it completely worthless .
These guys are much more expensive than anyone else .
$28+$32= $60 before you have even started .

    • I can't find mention of this $32.50 fee anywhere. :S Is that for "Buy For Me" or "Ship To Me"? The whole process is confusing with fee after fee after fee.

    • There is no $32.50 service fee

  • Sounds Like a great deal, But are HopShopGo trust worthy ?

I am contemplating buying Bose® QuietComfort® 15 from Amazone for $289.00 USD (~300.00 AUD) compare to $499.00 AUD from Bose store.

    • +1

friends don't let friends buy bose; (or was that starbucks)?

    • +1

Yes, HopShopGo is trustworthy, They are same company as Comgateway.

      • -1

Except com gateway dont have all these extra fees, they just make profit off their dhl shipping, charging about $50/kg.

        • HopShopGo is a joint venture between comGateway and PayPal. Fees look pretty much the same to me on both the HopShopGo and comGateway sites — where do you see they are different? Shipping is $24 for the the first kg and $4/kg thereafter on both, insurance costs 0.65% also.

        • Ok, they must have changed their rates since I last used cg.

    • +1

mshannon is right, avoid Bose. You can get equal or better quality for less money, even without going overseas.

    • [OT]I LOVE MY BOSE 15! Find me a better flight noise cancelling pair…[/OT]

      • Me too - I am officially in love with my Bose Sounddock Portable. It's one of the best things I've ever bought. Don't less the Bose haters put you off!

      • I prefer the Senheiser range. More portable to for flights.

    • Sounds Like a great deal, But are HopShopGo trust worthy ?

Yes but use a company called comgateway.

HopShopGo is just a middleman between you and comgateway.

  • looks like pay pal Australia are having a promo aswell, free shipping at a few stores.
    http://www.paypal-offers.com.au/free-shipping/

  • After reading these comments I am so confused about what I actually have to pay now…

Service fees, sales tax, gst, waah ??

    • Service Fee: If they charge one, you have to pay it.

Sales Tax: Depending on the retailer from whom you purchase the item - if they're big and honest, they'll waive any sales taxes for overseas customers.

GST: Depends on how much your item is worth. If you buy something big and have it shipped here, chances are customs will slap GST on it.

      • +4

Service Fee: Only need to pay this if you use HopShopGo's "BuyForMe" option.

Sales Tax: If you're using HopShopGo, you aren't considered an "overseas customer" since the order is being shipped within the US at the first instance. Regardless, HopShopGo is based in Oregon, which doesn't have any sales taxes so you won't need to pay it on your purchases.

GST: Only payable (along with customs duty) if what you import is worth (value of item(s) + shipping costs) A$1,000 or more. More info at: http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp

        • I don't think that A$1000 includes shipping costs.

        • I don’t think that A$1000 includes shipping costs.

I have read where people have had goods for below $1000 but hand had to pay GST because the shipping made it worth more than $1000

        • @anthony

I believe it's a matter of your mileage may vary. I have bought a laptop that including shipping came to around US$900 at a time when that would have been >A$1000. No GST was charged. Thanks for pointing it out though, it's not really worth the risk of paying an extra $100+.

        • -1

Technically shipping costs are not counted in the AUD$1000 GST free limit. But yes, depending on who processes your customs paperwork you may be unlucky.

I have not found anywhere where it says shipping costs are counted, if somebody can point it out, thanks!

  • +1

Can anyone work out what the actually fees we need to pay would be if we buy say a pair of shoes?

  • this deal can get a little complicated, there is also a "November 1, 2010 - December 4, 2010: Fuel surcharge is 8.5% of international shipping" plus as well as shipping itself you might have this to consider; "You will have to pay the DHL delivery agent for the relevant taxes and duties when they deliver your packages to you." DHL have their own customs handling charges, this is apart from any possible customs taxes

    • +1

I asked Live Chat as I was paranoid about my order; they said they were currently waiving the fuel surcharge.

    • never mind -
  • that's great! one charge down, only half a dozen or so left! :)

  • thanks so much op huge saving

  • I am planning to buy a camera from amazon, which cost around $400. Does anyone know if I could use my Australian Credit Card to pay for it and still get it shipped to hopshopgo? i.e. Can I use "Shipforme" to buy a camera from Amazon?

sorry, am new to this scene and so might be asking a stupid question.

  • fyi…

just tried to buy something on newegg.com…newegg did not accept the newly minted usa address from hopshopgo linked from paypal…saying paypal usa address was 'unconfirmed'…how do you confirm it???

anyways, if you get hopshopgo to 'buy it for you', they add another $24 on top of shipping as discussed above…

    • Just buy it with your credit card, make sure you put your AU CC address as teh billing address, and your hopshop one as the shipping address, job done.

      • brillant…that worked…much thanks stumo…

fyi, got the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 CIS 600 x 600 dpi Duplex Mobile Scanner…cheapest in aus is over $450 whereas hopefully with this deal it will be less than $300…

        http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16838115060&cm_re=snapscan--38-115-060--Product

        • +1

Im pretty sure newegg will reject that.

        • I've bought from newEgg about 6 months ago as above and using comgateway (hopshop by another name), so you should be all good.

        • I bought the same scanner with HopShopGo shipping (except from Amazon) three days ago- before this promotion unfortunately but it seems they have a 10% off shipping at the moment as well.

Nice coincidence. Great scanner from all accounts though.

        • @Turd, you were right…it got rejected by newegg…they said both billing & shipping address had to be verified by credit card company so big fail with amex…they can only do 1 address at a time…

@Stumo, how did you by from newegg for future reference?

So re-purchased via amazon, currently shipping as we speak…fingers cross i don't regret this…

        • I've checked my account history now, it was back in May this year for a hdd, just under a hundred bux.

I paid by paypal to my com gateway address. So maybe they have some threshold for unconfirmed addresses? Or maybe they've changed rules since then? Who knows.

But whenever that happens at other stores, I just use my visa card and it always works. Its a uk card though, not sure if that makes a difference.

      • don't you need to pay with Paypal in order to get the 1kg free offer from hopshop?

        • No.

Hop Shop Go is a Pay Pal company but that is all

        • -1

          i would think so.

    • Dont link the address to paypal. (unless you have an American bank account you cant anyway)

Pay with paypal and manually type in your address

  • dtrinh Is your paypal account verified?

    • yes it is…verified against an aussie bank though…

  • +1

Ordered a light jacket using ShipForMe. Thinking it should be under 1kg.

    Then I came across this:
    http://articoolz.com/2010/08/hopshopgo-com-exploring-thousan…

    Fingers crossed lol.

    • Freight is charged in 2 ways.
      1 The real weight
2 The weight according to the box size

You are charged whatever is more.

Say you send a box which is 1x1x1m and has a t-shirt in it

The t-shirt and box will probably weigh less than 1kg but the space the box takes up is large.
Because of this you are charged a weight which is equal to the space the box takes up

The weight size of the box would be 200kg

I think the complaints are because people have been charged the box size weight because the box is large and do not know that there are 2 ways you can be charged

comGateway (the real company behind HopShopGo) very clearly tell you the 2 different weights so you know what and why you are being charged.

I ordered a dress from Macys and HopShopGo claimed the weight was 10kg! The actual weight of the dress was only 0.7 kg!!

Sounds like that happened to this person and their dress was packed in a large box.
It also sounds like they only weighed their dress, not the box it came in.

  • So can we only buy one thing? I thinking about buying some tops from the same site so is the shipping just for one item or are multiple items allowed?
Also what if your package is over 1kg, does the $28.80 charge come in or do you pay the additional $4.8?
Just scared of little "hidden fees".

  • It's very confusing.
    What's service charge?
They said 10% off by using paypal. Where is it?? I check out at paypal,

    it's 80.29

    Sub Total US$ 72.99

Service Charge is a percentage of the amount paid to the merchant.
    Service Charge US$ 7.30

Domestic shipping charges incurred will be billed later.
Shipping Cost To be billed later
    (U.S. Domestic Shipping Cost)

    Total US$ 80.29

    • What’s service charge?

Because you are getting HopShopGo to buy the product for you.

They said 10% off by using paypal. Where is it?? I check out at paypal,

You might pay 10% more if you do not use paypal

      • The item I bought is 72.99 from amazon.
so 10% ser charge & 10% off form paypal.
I suppose to pay the same amount from original website, isn't it?

        • Why did you not buy it directly from asmazon and have it shipped to your hopshopgo address?

You would have had no service or paypal fees to pay

        • Just checking how do they charge.
          Haven't found something interesting.

  • 200 left

  • -7 left; they might be still giving these 1kg shipping waivers out despite saying that only 2000 were available. :)

  • +2

I reserved one…but I still think shipito is probably cheaper for me seeing as though I mostly buy bigger bulkier items….even with the free 1st kg….the biggest problem with the volumetric weight thing is you never know what size box the retailer is going to send the items in…

    • Exactly, I bought a SD card to add to an existing forwarding order of a HDD, for combined shipping savings, and the effing SD card almost doubled the shipping cost. That was with ComGateway.

      • They must be very poor at consolidating shipments then.

        • +1

I even asked them to re-check the packages for consolidation, which they advertise widely on their site as a money saving method.

So they re-checked, and still came back and said NO.

To which I replied "this will be the last time I ever use your forwarding service".

When the package arrived it was a joke, they were shipped as two packages, they could have easily taped the two boxes together, the SD card box was small and weighed next to nothing. I've not used them since.

        • Thanks for the heads-up. Probably should also stay away from HopShopGo as they are the same company I think.

    • Yes, Shipito appears to be cheaper for more expensive shipments (>$500) even with this offer from HopShopGo. Remember that HopShopGo charge 0.65% insurance on total order value (including freight charges) which can add up to a fair bit while Shipito freight charges already include insurance.

      • HopShopGo charge 0.65% insurance on total order value (including freight charges) which can add up to a fair bit while Shipito freight charges already include insurance.

Shipito charges you insurance based on what you declare the value of the goods to be.

Both companies charge the insurance separately to the shipping.

You cannot include the insurance in the cost of the shipping because insurance is determined based on the value of the thing you are sending.

        • I stand by what I say:
          http://www.shipito.com/shop-pricing
FedEx is including the cost of the insurance in the postage cost.

FedEx is easily the cheapest and fastest option for higher value goods (as was the context of my comment).

        • I stand by what I say

But you are wrong, the shipping fee with shipito does include a fee for insurance, they do not tell you how much the insurance is because it is mandatory that you pay it.

Included means the insurance fee is built in to the shipping cost.
The shipping cost is determined by the size of what you are sending and its declared value.

If you still dont believe me look at this or do a quote for yourself http://imgur.com/3Jyd2.jpg

A $400 difference between the parcels value.
This gives a $2.80 price difference on fedex.
$2.80 for $400 of insurance means $0.70 per $100 of insurance
That is a 0.7% insurance fee.
Which is 0.05% more than comgateway charge

DHL is charging 0.3% for insurance

        • It's just a case of semantics.

Shipito freight charges already include insurance.

That is what I said and I stand by the accuracy of that statement. There no no extra insurance calculations needed.

Also, you can't just go on insurance percentage figures when comparing. HopShopGo include shipping cost when calculating insurance.

Thank you for doing all the calculations!

        • There no no extra insurance calculations needed.

Yep, sorry I thought you meant insurance was free or you were not paying for it.

Thank you for doing all the calculations!

Dont take them as accurate for every shipment as the fee might not be a flat percentage rate based on the value of the contents.
If you make up a shipment with a value of $600 the price might not go up by $0.70 it could be more or less.

Shipments with the same value but different dimensions could also give different insurance percentage rates depending on how fedex/dhl work out the prices.

Just bought a bag for the wife at coachfactory which currently has 48-hour 20%off sale, chose "ship for me" as I have a US credit card. First time with Hop Shop, will report back how it goes.
