I purchased one from there on eBay yesterday $165 with post, off to JB today for Planet Earth 11 4k set @ a mere $23

  • Can this play all types of DVDs?

My parents have DVDs of foreign films that work in some DVD players but not others.

    • DVD should be region free for this player.

  • +1

Not sure why you'd buy this when you can pay a bit extra and get a full gaming console.

    • +7

Standalone players have better dedication towards home theatre setups, comes with a proper remote control and HDR performance is meant to be better too (not sure how but that's what they say). Also some people like black units to match all their stuff

      • +1

        I agree
I have Both an Xbox and a 4k bluray player
I always opt for the Samsung player, even 1080P looks stunning upscaled

XBOX ONE X is still $600+. PS4 does not have 4k bluray.

      • +7

He's referring to the Xbox One S methinks which is also a UHD player

      • +2

        Xbox one S has a 4k bluray player and they are only $259 A T M

        • Reading reviews comparing both Xbox and stand alone players, the Xbox isn't great. Mainly they way it converts colours, does it in a backward way compared to all others. ( kinda converts formats multiple times to get the correct output, resulting in colours not correct. )

        • +1

@PVA: I agree. Was just advising it actually supported 4k bluray.

        • +2

          @ode1:
If the PS4 pro played 4k discs I would have bought one, silly Sony has done this.
Thinking about an Xbox x but it's a bit too dear ATM, and I can't see myself buying the Xbox s.

        • +1

          My thoughts too.
Microsoft is pushing hard into Heavy-Compressed 4K videos streamed.
SONY is pushing hard into High-Bitrate 4K videos via UHD BluRay Disks.
Yet, MS includes a 4K BluRay player with the Xbox One S.
Whereas, Sony neglects to include it in the PS4 Pro.

…it's like some Freaky Friday situation where their roles have reversed.
What's next… MS goes with standard Bluetooth on their console? Has a great controller and no gimmicky accessories? Attempts to make a decently powerful console? Heralds backwards compatibility? Or pushes for cross-platform play? "oh"

Damn, Sony is letting the success get to their heads and have moved away from their previous practices. Looks like the Xbox is becoming what the PlayStation used to be: consumer-friendly.

        • @Kangal:

          What console do you have.
Have you changed systems, gone from ps4 to xbox, how did it go. That's my concern. Giving up ps to go to a whole new eco system.

          @PVA:
I've got a PS4 and a stack of games collecting dust. I still have my old PS3 connected which has a few japanese games I enjoy. Don't really have much time for gaming in general however.

I did get an original Xbox and 360 years back, from garage sale, gave those away for free years ago. And my housemates used to have a N64 and GameCube which we played on like 4 years back. Even had a Nintendo Wii (Mario was sweet), that also got traded in by my younger brother to play PS3 Fifa. Younger brother had the DSi and a friend had a PSP (which I hacked/modded for him). I still think MS's box is cool and Nintendo makes some fun games, however, I tend to side towards PlayStation brand for nostalgia reasons (grew up with a PS1/PS2 and GameBoy Color). I remember having an Atari 2600 back in 1993 with Dancing Plates..

Never had the Wii U, Dreamcast, SNES, NES, Sega. But did play their titles on other hardware via ports or emulation.

In terms of gaming, I think I might sell off the PS4 and PS3 next year (and a PS2 Slim I have in a box). Then I will build a HTPC for emulation (RCPS3 has progressed !). Steam is just that much better than PlayStation and Xbox. And I have a MacBook but find the need for a decently powerful Windows PC every once in a while. I was going to build another ScrapYard champion, aka Hell Box One, but that takes a lot of time, and the hardware is becoming obsolete… so I'm thinking of a SilverStone RVz02/Ncase M1 with Zen+ (r7-2700) and Pascal (1070) when prices return to sanity in 2018. Unless there's a Nintendo Switch-like dock for a laptop which includes Cooling, eGPU and Hard-drive enclosure at affordable prices next year (but I doubt OEMs would be that consumer-friendly).

        • @Kangal:
Apart from the second half of of the comment about PC, it sounds just like us.
I don't play often at all, son plays sometimes but not a lot compared to some kids.
Most use of the PS4 would be the Netflix app I guess.
And was using it for blu ray movies until it was moved to the older tv in the play room.

I guess our new 4 k tv was digging in my mind saying I need a new console/ 4k bluray player , reality is I prob don't.

        • +1

          @PVA:
Yeah, my PS3 is my BluRay player… I still *gulp * rent movies from time to time.
The quality is just unparalleled between even 1080p BluRay vs 4K Streaming.
Especially on my very fast Naked ADSL2+ connection with ~13Mbps (3-20Mbps) speeds.

So a 4K/UHD BluRay would be that much better, just more detail and less compression.
And I haven't even said anything about the sound quality coming from my Yamaha amp.
I don't necessarily care about 4K resolution on TV's, but rather getting HDR, and also a panel with less gloss/more matte film with higher brightness and lower blacks (OLED ?) to make it more Sunlight Friendly and less Nighttime Mirror.

However, I keep being reminded every once in a while, PC's have a lot more codecs.
So moving forward, I am going to try and unite everything to HTPC… put all eggs into one basket.
I suggest people start doing the same.

    • Does it play 3D blurays too?

    • @vee124: Not sure why you would classify paying an additional $100 on top of $150 as "a bit extra"!

      • For a full gaming console and streaming box? You pay $100 for just a streaming box.

        • +2

But percentage-wise, you are still forking out a lot more money.

Also, streaming boxes literally can't play 4K discs…

Don't get me wrong, I'm a gamer and would personally buy an Xbone (if I wanted one), but I understand there are people out there who don't need a gaming console and can save themselves a lot of money getting a standalone 4K player (which arguably performs better than a console).

      • +1

you get a couple of games with the $280 console. Sell off the games and its about $150 just for the console

    • That's what I thought before I bought the XB1X. Now it sometimes plays the same UHD Bluray disc, sometimes doesn't… seriously.

The Xbox One menu system, and frequent system updates, would drive a lot of older people insane.

      • The best GUI was hands-down the PS3.
It wasn't cluttered like the old Xbox 360 GUI, and didn't have any fancy imagery like the new Xbox 360 and PS4 interfaces do.

It offered the most intuitive navigation method, was very light, and could work on top of the game/media so you didn't have to stop it. The only problem was the anaemic 256MB RAM hardware forced the System to Exit Games when you wanted to access Settings or the PlayStation Store. Things a PC or Phone doesn't have problem doing these days, thanks to all that extra memory.

Although I must say, the PS3's Settings menu truly needed an overhaul.
When you did have a task running, like playing music, it did just sit atop the app as you wanted but the Settings was really long and cluttered that it was a chore to navigate some times.

Fix that, and let it run on stronger hardware…. then you have yourself a much much better TV experience. Kind of like Kodi.

      • Would drive anyone insane.

One reason to get an external player of an XBox One S is that some external players have 2x HDMI outs (so you can feed HDR straight to your TV in case your receiver doesn't do HDR passthrough). Not this one though…

    • because like me 80% of the population do not do AV gaming.

  • Trying to find out if the Netflix/Youtube apps on this do 4k + HDR as well

Edit: There's evidence here (near the end of the thread) that a firmware update has added HDR to Netflix app

  • Tempting as the Hobbit 3d Bluray was crashing my Xbox one s last night until I rebooted it. Console is definately more cumbersome than a dedicated player.
Unfortunately no Dolby vision. But looking like LG has removed that feature from theirs currently. Leaving only the Oppo with Dolby vision.

  • +2

There are a couple of people on the planet that don't do gaming Im one of those:)

    and just want BR 4k.

  • JB also has a factory scoop on UBD-M9500 ($298 + $9.95 delivery).
