I want to learn how to hem my own shirts so I was in the market for a sewing machine.

Earlier this month there was a similar deal for Brother JS1700 which has already expired. The slightly newer model SL100 is still available for the same sale price.

Original price $299, sale price $129, use code for $40off100 spend - comes to $89 delivered.

4.9% cashback from Cashrewards too.

Credit to DaWeizOne for posting the original deal and monty.melb for posting the discount code.

    • +1

any sewing machine can hem jeans if you know how to sew ….. was one of the reasons i bought a machine ….. refused to pay $20 eveytime in wanted $10 kmart jeans shortened or pockets fixed.

thick yellow theread for jeans isn’t cheap though.

      • Thank you for sharing. What are the average prices for thick yellow threads for jeans? And do you think this Singer machine is good?

Great post for 1st timer OP!

      • Thanks, how is this compared to the brother.

        • I dont know tbh, it is for my misses who does small craft or little bit of sewing. Since same price and MORE Reviews with at least 4 stars. I will go with this instead of brother which has no feedback. Cant go wrong with this or singer.

        • @aladdin:

          it has round thingy

          Do you even sew, bro?

Hey everyone you can get a similar machine by Singer, it is always at $89.
    The Brother is overpriced.

I have the Singer and use it regularly.

    • Can yours hem jeans????

      • Don't know but it is smart and intuitive, the perfect machine to bring your creations to life.

My wife bought this a while back. It's cheap, basic and does all the things she wants including hemming jeans :)

        • Thanks for sharing!

          @sky blu:

It's a great machine at probably the lowest price in Australia. Even my mother has borrowed it a few times to hem some stuff.

We're not full on regular sewers so this machine was good for us. Did all the stuff and was cheap while stil decent.

      • Yes, I have hem jeans!

Can the machine hem jeans thoughhhhhhhhhhh!?????

        • All sewing machines can hem jeans with the correct needle and thread. The real question is can you operate a sewing machine to hem jeans?

If you have to ask the answer might be no.

        • @Stirlingsilver: I don't know but my mum does know how to operate one, but she says only the "commercial" type can do jeans properly(!?) That's why I want opinions from people who have one of these less expensive models.

        • +1

@sky blu: So the serious response is: even a basic sewer can hem most pants to an acceptable standard, although an invisible hand stitch is best in some cases.
Your mum is right; you will never get jeans to look as they do in the shops. This is because they are usually finished (stone wash etc.) after they are hemmed, so your home hemming looks almost too neat. However this is the case for a profession job too. You can buy the gold thread so it looks better - but you will need to ensure you sew straight if you go for this option.

Finally, my advice is a very basic machine is just as good for most sewing jobs as an expensive one. You are unlikely to ever use more than straight or zigzag stitch. The additional features of an expensive machine are wasted on a non-advanced sewer.

        • +1

          @Stirlingsilver:

I think there's also thickness to consider. The professional hems for jeans are folded twice (to prevent fraying) creating a triple thickness of denim.

The side seams are also typically folded flat (and sometimes sewed in place to create a felled seam) so they are also triple thickness.

Where the seam meets the hem you have nine thickness of denim in a very hard wad of denim. Home sewing machines simply don't have enough power.

Wait til there's a Xiaomi Sewing Machine - that's when the boys come out to play

they aren’t sewers but also don’t want to pay $20 for getting jeans hemmed …… like people owning cordless drill but only use once a year so they don’t pay some one to fix something.

as we head towards service industries we seem to forget it’s cheaper to fix things yourself ….. like our parents used to ……. my mum never sent anything out to be sewn, my dad never hired a person to paint the house or clean the gutter.

currently hate breville ….. one element in the smart toaster is died and they don’t sell spares, asked if their suggestion is to bin the $170 toaster or put it on the mantle piece as a conversation piece as they don’t sell parts , their answer was they couldn’t recommend what i should do …… i had some ideas but the customer service person was too far away.

      • +1

Definitely need to learn to hem jeans. Very jealous of those people who have the average leg and sleeve length.

Not a fan of Breville either. Their kettles and toasters break down faster than the $7.50 Kmart ones. Also material quality seems to be cheap. Looks good on the outside, but marks or dents easily, which I'm finding with the Oracle. I've never seen a stainless steel drip tray on a coffee machine scratch/mark/discolour until now. Seems to develop random little dents out of the blue on the front stainless steel covering too.

      • I like the way use the dots ellipses.

  • Seems back in stock but not free delivery, so it's 98 instead. Still a good price?
