  • Is this stuff good for old fashioned safety razors and badger brushes? I just been buying the cheap one in the orange cardboard box, I didn't think it mattered which brand I used.

    • +3

      No. It's garbage. Avoid it.

The cheapest non trash is probably Proraso, as used by every old Italian barber in the world. You should be able to pick up a tube for under ten bucks.

That said, I only use Taylors these days. It's only like $23 a tub, works perfectly every time and it lasts forever.

      • +2

Yes, but that requires a long pre-shave process that some people might not like. I use Taylors too, but I have used KoS in the past and it's much better than the canned Nivea/Gillette garbage.

        • I just mash the cream up with the brush and then mash it against my face in rough circles. I'm probably not doing it right, but it doesn't take long.

        • but that requires a long pre-shave process

What, swirling a brush for 15 seconds?

        • @jjcf:
Well, no, you're supposed to keep it on your face for at least 5 minutes, for the Glycerin to kick in and soften the outer layer of the hair.

        • Really? I've used both and prefer Nivea tbh

        • Half a bar of pears soap in a mug, wet brush, swirl for 10 sec wet brush and do it again. If not lathered enough do it again.

          Spread on face then shave.

    • I use half a bar of pears soap in a mug, get a great shave… Half a bar is 50cents…

I have a couple sitting here that i couldn't even flog for $2 at a garage sale. Bought them to get free shipping. Tried one. But I'm happier not using shaving cream at all

If anyone in mount lawley WA wants two you can have em for free. Or if you want it with a headblade (with a couple fresh blades) maybe throw me a fiver (coz headblades are not cheap!)

    • +1

What are you using instead of shaving cream?

      • +1

        his a rough rider!

I use DE blades and this gel does not work well. It clogs up the blade.

  • +1

The oil is the business. Blades last for an age as they are oiled. Easy to see where you are shaving and you only require a tiny squirt. Way better than creams or foams. I have blades I have used for months.

    • That oil and this gel on top is even better.

  • I use this https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CELLA-CREMA-SAPONE-SWEET-ALMOND-… with my DE razor 200g lasts about 18mths I split it into 200g lots wrap it in cling wrap and freeze it. 8 years of good shaving soap for under $50.

I use this to shave my head with a Mach 3 Turbo. Great stuff!

  • +3

i bought the one with moisturiser in it last time for the same price and I hate it. Feels like you're shaving with sorbelene.

Thanks OP. I'll pick up the one in the pic, its been my go to for years now.

Works well with safety razor as well as cut throat.

    this stuff is awesome

  • +1

This is awful stuff. I've used it in the past and it's always clogged my razor.

As mentioned, a great cheap shaving product is Proraso in the tube or you can get it in a bowl for use with a badger brush. I've used both the tube and the one in the bowl and I rate them even better than Truefitt and Hill. Good stuff.

Jumping on this thread since we have some knowledgeable people here. How do the standard Gillette razors and gel do for simple standard face shaving.

Or should I be spending my dollars elsewhere.

I don't shave that much maybe once a month if even that so take that into consideration.

    • Gillette and Schlick are perfectly fine. But the single edge old style razor people like jumping on every shaving thread and saying just how much more sophisticated and better than you they are and how users of Gillette are corporate sheep.

For once a month you can use anything at all

      • Ok cool sounds good to me. I even have a backup Philips electric shave but haven't taken it out yet until I read up more on how to maintain it and what stuff to use for it.

I am guessing it is also messier so might have to shave outside.

        We shall see.

        • It'll mostly end up inside the head part of its like my Remington. You just empty and clean after, I gave that to my father though as I didn't like it.

      • how users of Gillette are corporate sheep

Well to be fair they are pointlessly handing over money to Gilette & Co to shave with something that's been engineered to fail quickly and looks like it was designed by a 5 year old on acid.

Remember the Onion article about 5 bladed razors and here we are!

        • my blades last about 25 shaves. So 10 per year, buy them on special. I proabably could save money over 3 or 4 years by switching, but it would be $15 per year and there are easier ways to save $15

    • They are fine, I stopped using them as described was much cheaper and didn't irritate me as much.

I use derby blades with a merkur razor and pears soap as a lather.

I don't understand why anyone needs to spend the cash some of them do, my shaves are great.

I am using this gel with Gillette mach 3 razor. no issues at all. highly recommended for sensitive skin.

  • Recommend the tri shave stuff. Relatively cheap and good

  • It's shit.I took some to a remote fishing location recently as it was a suitable size, but it's nowhere near as good as the Gels from the likes of Nivea, or yesterday's purchase of the L'Oreal (currently on sale at Woolworths)

I've found that the KoS menthol is one of the few gel shaving cremes that doesn't burn / irritate my skin, so I stick with it.

speaking of burning / irritating skin - I've been using the Gillette "Cool Wave" after shave GEL for years for the same reason (it doesn't burn) but I've used up my stockpile of it.. haven't seen it around for years now.. can anyone recommend a good GEL after shave please? the splash ons always have way too much alcohol in them which irritates my skin.

    thank you.

I bought this in the last 1/2 price sale and love it!! I use some cheap BIC disposables and haven’t had any issues like the blades clogging up, etc. in fact, they have 3-4 more shaves in them than before when I just used to shave without any gel.

  • Tried this awhile ago, did not like it.

  • Be a man and just get it waxed off

  • Very thick liquid, never used it.

    • Very thick liquid

      …typically called a "gel".
      :)

      • "typically called a "gel".

        or is it a cream

        • +1

          It's literally called "Shave Gel" … so I'd say it's a gel. :)
