1694

Hey,

NOTE: Must download the client, will not work if you buy from website.

First post, should be a good one!

Age of Empires III for only 10cents, need to login and download from Windows Marketplace.

Need to download the Marketplace client and sign in, download from http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-CA/Download/ and launch the client, will show as 10cents.

Enjoy

Edit: I believe this is the Collector's Edition, which includes expansions. Can anyone confirm?

Edit2: Confirmed it does include Expansions.

Edit3: Courtesy of Anthonettex: “Due to the overwhelming success of the Age of Empires III sale, we have temporarily run out of keys to unlock the game. You can still buy the game at this amazing price and you will get/see a key in the next week. When new keys are added to the system you will be auto-assigned a key, there is no need to call support or take any other action from your end. We will post here on the forums when the keys are available and the next time you click ‘View Game Keys’ for the game you should be assigned one.

Edit4: People now having issues with billing and account services with Microsoft, would strongly advise that we call this deal expired now to avoid anyone having to go through a customer service center for a refund.

Thank you for your patience and we hope you enjoy the game.”

    • Seems like they are run out of keys and have to wait a week.

    • Do you know if we can just buy it through the client and then download it later or?

I'm at work, I've downloaded the client but I don't want to download the game. I just want to purchase it on time.

      • Yup you can, pay for it now and download it later when the servers aren't as choked

        • Thanks. The servers seem fine though! I clicked on Purchase and then moved to Download Queue in order to stop it and it had already downloaded 81MB.

  • what the heck why is it so cheap?
Even some companies are charging more than this for old DOS games!

  • Great.

  • and to think i bout the first AoE III and Asian dynasties at full price :P

  • If I want to install this on multiple PCs so I can play it with my kids on the LAN, do I need to purchase multiple copies?

If installation is via GFW do I need to install GFW on each computer and buy it via that PC?

    • I imagine you will need to install the GFW client on both PC's, not sure exactly how the back end works or whether you can login to two GFW's simultaneously. You will probably need to purchase another copy for CD-Key conflicts.

    • No doubt you would need to buy it on multiple IDs, I don't think they would allow you to log in on multiple PCs at once.

man, you must be an awesome dad!

    • LOL, what's another 10c :)

      • Except it's not 10c. It's $69.95 as of last night.

  • Thank you for the post. It is a super bargain. I already bought it and will resume download at night during off peak time since the file is close to 3GB 0.o

  • Every time I try and sign in, i just get signed out automatically. Can't get the game!

  • Thanks. I still had some MS points in my live account, used them instead :)

I followed the instructions here and tried this download - new user of this Microsoft games site. I could not get the download to work, it seems from their Help section that there are many factors which can stop it. After disabling my router firewall, Windows Firewall, antispyware and antiadware programs, the best I could get was 3% downloaded (ADSL2) then download lockup. Most attempts gave 0% download and message about error encountered, have to close, sorry.

So users who are not tech experts might have some trouble with this (although I see others here have had success).

Truth is Games4WL is a horrible and buggy system. You aren't the only victim. It should be terminated.

  • +1

This is an absolutely ridiculous bargain. Who needs to pirate games when they can be had for a measly $0.10c.
Praying that the GFWL UI doesn't be a prick and installs/executes smoothly.
UPDATE>"Error connecting to server"…ahh, just wonderful!
Time to put my troubleshooting hat on. ty M$

  • The resume button doesn't seem to work when downloading…

  • I would get this if I hadn't set my location as the United States when I signed up for a gamertag, can't buy anything due to the false location and I can't change it for some reason…

    • If you haven't already, you could try creating a separate new login.

  • Good, the first time I've put Kevin's fibre through a big workout. Downloaded for about 20 minutes last night and got the other 10 minutes just now. The pause/resume worked fine for me.

  • Seems already ended.

    Remember to refresh the page.

  • Rumour is from beta testers that Age of Empires Online is coming out of beta.

    • Maybe they should put their Marketplace and client software back in beta ;-)

  • +1

Trying to get it using credit card. I get "An error has occurred during the transaction. Please try again later.". Wonderful MS error messages as usual…

    • +1

Same for me. Reallllly useful error message

      EDIT: finally working now. Yay!

EDIT 2: charged $69.95, what the mod:foul language???

EDIT 3: They're going to refund my money apparently, convenient though how it takes them a second to take the money out, and 2-3 days to give it back…

I strongly suggest that people don't purchase this.

    • Charged me $69.95 too! Microsoft you bunch of…. <Grrrr>. Seriously crap client software (not even a search function), price changes/sales ends without warning (How hard is it to put an end time/date for the sale?). Meaningless error messages. Price changes take place mid transaction (rather than canceling a transaction if there is change on the backend)! If they have run out of keys how do you find that out (even after purchase)? "Games for Windows" phone line prompts mention everything about Xbox (nothing about PC!). Can't fix the transaction so it charges you the correct price. Can only refund you the $69.95(!) and that will take 3 days?

Pathetic effort on all counts Microsoft. Really don't know how they can develop such poor software/processes/customer service with all the staff/money they have.

      • Persevere through all of the 'xbox' crap on the phone. I spoke to Nicky, she was really helpful.

        • I did (I'm not going to let them rob $70). Did you do any better than getting a refund in 3 days though? I hope Steam teaches them a lesson. By the way they are charging $39.99 in the US now -> Aust $69.95?!

      • You summed up your crappy experiences with M$ perfectly.
They really are full of their own big fat inflated ego and it seems they cannot do anything right.
What a scam to charge you RRP!
Hope to delete this crappy piece of software from my PC.

      • +1

Did you guys get charged $2 fees as well?

I got hit by the price change and by the time I listened through all the voice prompt crap, the call centre had closed.

I'm not even sure its the right number, everything was xbox related?

        Is it 1800 555 741?

        • No. I didn't get that far(to the purchase confirmation screen). Kept receiving an error message. In hindsight, glad I wasn't able to proceed. Last thing I would wanna do tomorrow is spend half the day on the phone to M$ trying to get a refund. Sounds like you got the double whammy ; insane price hike and $2 surcharge. Yikes!

I believe that is the right number, just persist and demand to speak to a human operator.

        • -1

Yes, just thank [Insert your deity!] that the telcos didn't let Microsoft software completely run our telephone system (yet).

          Australia Phone number: 1800 555 741
          Hours of operation (AEST):
          7.00am to 9.00pm - Monday to Friday
          9.00am to 5.00pm - Saturday and Sunday

        • Got through to (an Indian?) call centre at 7:30am. Said that they needed to investigate further that no one else had this problem.

          What a crock.

        • +2

@lolcoaster, their Philippines based call centre (the one I was passed through to last night) would have handled the bulk of complaints yesterday. I doubt Microsoft would care enough to give their other international call centre(s) a briefing of current customer problems for this mornings shift.

Mind you their US centric tech staff are too busy playing Xbox to have a real understanding of the problems customers face using their software/processes eg. From their support forum http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/15705.aspx:
"When we update the prices for or after a sale it can take the website some time to filter that data to all the regions. Even if it shows the old price, it will not allow you to purchase the game as it notices that the price advertised is not the one that would be charged and exits out as the first user noticed. This is so that you are only charged what you expect and we show on the site if the server is being updated."

Lol! Yes, we customers must have imagined that $69.95 charge on our credit cards when the checkout said 10c.
They really need to stop smoking that Redmond dope ;-)

        • Urgh, spent my lunch trying again. Still the Indian call centre I believe.

Did anyone who got promised a refund get an email confirmation?

When I told them that I knew of people who did get one, they wanted me to send them a copy to "help with their investigation".

        • I asked if they could email me a confirmation that they would actually refund me (after they ripped me off) and they said they couldn't (Exchange server down? Outlook infected with viruses maybe?). They gave me a reference number and told me to check with my credit card provider after 3 days! Thank goodness the CC company servers are not MS based.

MS operator asked me for a copy of the error message during the transaction. I told them their client software doesn't keep displaying it after it proceeds to charge you the wrong price! I think they have an expectation that we video out interaction with their services so they can use them to fix their systems!

        • So, anyone get a refund yet?

        • No refund yet (5 days since they "said" they would refund the money). Charge of $69.95 + international transaction fee of $1.05 (?) still on my credit card bill as of 22/11. If they weren't Microsoft I'd say their actions so far (for me) equate to that of "scammers".

  • It shows $0.10 but when you click download it becomes $69.95?!

  • I got it for $0.10

  • -1

daydream - no, only got the whole 3 days crap. I also don't get how USD$39.95 somehow translates into AUD$69.95. They might want to check their currency conversion rates… Definately not using this service again though, Steam for me.

    • Pretty sure continually negging the post was necessary.I'll update main post to state there are issues and to advise people not to continue.

      • +2

Lol he only negged once. The neg symbol just appears to every comment he makes.

  • Oh this sucks!
I registered and put my CC details in to make payment but kept getting a darn "server error!" message.
now it is back to full price and I missed out. Probably realized demand was overwhelming and they put a block on it or their crappy servers were overloaded, typical Microsoft behaviour.

  • They got us a new batch of game keys :D

  • microsoft made a whopping $26 from this sale

    • +1

Not after they started charging people $69.95 for the 10c transaction.

      • I only got charged $2 for the transaction not $69.95.. Got 2 separate charges 0.10c for the collection and $2 for the transaction. If you got charged $69.95 for the transaction itself you should get a refund.

        • You must have gotten in before they chose to change the price for Australia without warning for others.

Btw why are people comfortable to be charged $2 extra, 2000% of the items price for no reason/without explanation. I know it's under the hope that it will be refunded but where is that described during the transaction process? When I buy something from Coles on credit they don't stick a random charge on my card and say "It's just the way it is. We might refund it later (but we can't put that in writing)"!

        • -3

I got charged $69.95 PLUS the $2 transaction, which happened AFTER they said they'd refund my money. Seriously thinking of talking to the ACCC

  • -2

deal is over, and made me install the stupid client which I cannot uninstall!

  • Hope it works out for you daydream and you get that refund quickly, and all the others that got jipped.
This turned out to be a disaster. Terrible client software + terrible third world tech support = M$ style.

  • After downloading the client, the game within the app says "Age of Empires III 69.95", not quite 10 cents. Any ideas?

    • sale = over

  • I only got charged 10 cents, but the installer client thing is extremely buggy (crashed 3 times, wouldn't pause)… someone else I know had tons of trouble with the client, he couldn't make it pause.

  • No key yet!!!

    • Understandably frustrating, but I still don't have my $70 back yet, so you're not that bad off :-)

  • I also got charged $69.95 when the checkout (through the client) said $0.10c!!

    This is unbelievable!!

    What have people done???

I downloaded the client, browsed to the game, it was listed as 0.10, so a purchased it!!

    • Call the MS phone number above and complain. Don't let them fob you off. If they play hardball complain to MS Aust and if they still don't want to address the problem contact Consumer Affairs. Their call centre staff currently don't believe that we in Aust could see 10c price via their client software at all (Even though their tech staff said so http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/15699.aspx)! So we must be all liars?! Why the heck would so many choose to buy and old game for $69.95 all of a sudden?! They also believe that we must have purchased it after the sale ended via accounts associated with the US store which does make sense either because we weren't charged the equiv of US$39.99 (the current US price)! The more that log problems the more they will realise that we aren't making this up and that something went wrong with their processes/software.

Can't believe they could be bothered putting up such a ridiculous argument and creating such ill will with customers over a game that they were happy to sell to thousands for 10c! Charge us correctly Microsoft or refund the total amount (incl those vague associated token charges) you've taken from us.

      • +1

Well it's now over a week later and I'm on my third call to Microsoft now and STILL no refund.

EDIT: apparently now I'm not getting a refund. Pricks!!!!

EDIT 2: they're now claiming that it was never available to Australian and New Zealand customers, I just had an argument about it with a supervisor via xbox live. She offered no evidence whatsoever to support this.

If you want to comaplain in wiring, send a letter to:

        Microsoft Complaints Department
        1 Epping road
        North Ryde
        NSW 2113

        • Then it should never have shown that price through the Games For Windows client for us in Australia (which it did otherwise people wouldn't have gotten this deal at all). Wonder if anyone got a screen shot of the price in the client? Not that we should have to go through this but they the ones in the wrong and they are overcharging us.

  • Agreed, I'm furious! I was wondering if anyone got a screenshot of the client as well, I never did because I didn't think it was necessary. I do have a screenshot of the website though. I'm going to send Microsoft a latter including that screenshot, and a screenshot of the first page of this deal proving that Aussies did get the deal

    • Even worse why would anyone buy it for $69.95 when we can get full physical versions cheaper at most retailers! http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/support.aspx?post=1&results=10&q=age+of+empires&source=all&bnSearch=Go!

      • Exactly. I contacted Microsoft Customer Support by email and they said I deserved a refund, and asked me to forward the purchase confirmation email. I did so, they then said "oh ok, you need to contact live support on this phone number…" AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        • Same with me. They said I would get a refund verbally (as described above) and sent me an email later in the week spinning their lines saying they can't. Makes no sense why a customer would legitimately buy the product at full price. It should be a simple case of matching times of transaction to the time frame of any price change they made and then refunding the relevant customers.

  • Well I've written my letter to Microsoft and will post tomorrow. Will update if/when something happens

  • +1

I've called up Microsoft a number of times now. I was promised a resolution within 24-48 hours initially but nothing happened when I contacted them after 48 hours. I Waited for another 2 days to call them, only to be told that "they were just about to call me" and that I wouldn't be getting a refund because apparently I purchased the product outside of the sale time, despite my insistence that it was still showing 10c when I confirmed my purchase.

I've lodged a dispute with my bank.

    • Dec. 4, 9:00 am PST - Dec. 5, 8:30 am PST: Viva Piñata — $0.99, down from $19.99
    • Dec. 5, 9:00 am PST - Dec. 6, 8:30 am PST: Blacklight: Tango Down — $0.99, down from $14.99
    • -1

If you're talking about the Games for Windows store, which I'll never deal with again, I suggest making a new topic.

  • +1

    Hi Captain Obvious,

I'm in the same boat. Microsoft have claimed that in their own testing environment (when they simulated purchasing the game at 10c) a 'pop up should have appeared indicating that the deal is over and automatically change the price at checkout to $69.95'.

That is completely retarded - why would anyone in their right mind purchase the game after it changes from 10c to $69.95. Never buying any games from Microsoft again. Showing this kind of contempt to it's customers over a game they were willing to sell for 10c is ridiculous. Any other company would have corrected this mistake.

Once I called them up, they said they have received the same reports from many users about being charged $69.95 when trying to purchase the game at 10c. What is unbelievable is that they said 'In all situations, the user is WRONG and a popup should have alerted that the deal is over'. Microsoft you piece of shit..

    http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/3144/aoeclient.jpg

This is a screen shot of the PRICE within Windows Market Place client at 8:52PM 22-Nov-2010 after which the claimed the deal is OVER. I bought the game at 8:22PM, my credit card was debited at 8:23PM for $69.95 when the checkout clearly said 10c. THIRTY minutes later, I decided to take a screenshot, and luckily I did, price = $0.10!!

M advice to everyone affected? Save yourself the trouble and simply call the bank which issued your credit card. They are very happy to credit you back the $69.95 from Microsoft's accounts. The Commonwealth Bank said that because it is a online retailer, they have no proof that you actually agreed to pay the $69.95 (eg no physical signature), especially when the checkout indicated 10c. The very helpful person over the phone said that this is simply a risk online retailers must take.

For all those affected, call your bank and get the charge refunded. You'll find your bank are much more understanding that Microsoft.

I got refunded the money by the bank 3 days after I called them.

This is a disgraceful experience with Microsoft Live Team. I hope someone is reading this.

Every call I've made to Microsoft so far, they have tried to explain to me why I am in the wrong, this and that..
    1. Deal was over
    2. Popup message should have appeared
    3. Deal not available to Australia
    4. Cannot speak to billing department directly
    5. The supervisor is the highest ranking person I can speak to.
    6. That the user is trying to cheat Microsoft by claiming 10c deal..

    sigh

Will never buy from these idiots again.

    • Ah that's interesting, I didn't get the popup excuse. That system would actually work had they bothered to actually do it instead of pretending that they did it. I also got essentially accused of lying which, as you note, is moronic considering that they're being this difficult over a game they were selling for $0.10. I'm wondering if this was an organised fraud attempt
      - advertise for $0.10
      - sell to a few people for $0.10 so everyone thinks it's legit
      - jack the price back to $69.95 without telling anyone, whilst leaving the $0.10 price advertised
      - claim to anyone who complains that it wasn't available to them

I'll definately contact my back though, thanks for the tip :-). I'll see if Microsoft has done anything by tomorrow, and if not, it's off to the bank and the ACCC for me.

  • I'm just thinking that if I didn't know about this website I would never know not to buy from Microsoft - I mean you would think they were safe wouldn't you? This scam should be published elsewhere, has anyone gone to TT or ACA to see if they are interested? I also wonder why they charged 10c via a credit card if they didn't intend to scam - they could just have made it free and not had to go to the trouble of processing the payments. And why won't they accept responsibility now rather than cause all this ill feeling?

    • To be fair, I don't think they intended to scam anyone. Its just that:
      a) Their system sucks
      b) Their support sucks
      c) They won't admit that they're wrong

So, of the people promised their money, anyone received it yet?

      • Not yet. However they did start offering me the possibility of having my $72.01 refunded as Microsoft Points, so maybe they're getting the message. I informed them though that solution was unacceptable, only a complete refund will work.

They were supposed to phone me yesterday and nothing happened, so I reminded them that if they don't refund my money by Wednesday, which is their two week deadline, I'm going to the ACCC.

        • $72.01 refunded as Microsoft Points is unacceptable.

      • A refund should take place with the currency they have taken not some denomination they have made up (and can arbitrarily decide/change it's worth). Maybe next time I will try to buy a copy of Windows with daydream dollars ;-)

Was it $72.01 because of the extra charge on top of 69.95?

        • Correct. It's the $69.95, plus bullshit currency conversion fees, bringing it up to $72.01.

  • +1

The ACCC information centre is available to explain your rights and obligations under the legislation, and how we are likely to react to particular business practices. This service is available to both business and consumers and is free of charge.

The Infocentre can be contacted by calling 1300 302 502 (Australian callers)

  • As an update, Microsoft are STILL efusing to return my money.

    • Egg their house…

      • oh, you have no idea how much I'd want to…

        • I finally managed to get my bank to reverse the charges. Took a while (not blaming my bank) but I finally got my money back in the end. Big props to NAB.

        • Actually, apparently MS can still get their money back if they can prove the transaction was valid or something?
