    • Normally I prefer HGST but this is a lot better if you need 3 or more disks because you'll have to pay GST on the import.

Edit: $18 shipping on the Toshiba is a bit expensive.

      Toshiba: $1765 for 5 disks
      HGST: $1917 for 5 disks

      • The Shipping is less if you buy 2 or more. They also send send via express tracked courier. Purchased 2 HDD earlier this year from them. Was shipped before 5pm Melbourne and arrived next day 10am at my place in Sydney.

        • don't forget they take offers + ebay sitewide coupons

        • wow! that's insanely fast! oh wait.. you are referring to the ebay deal, not the Amazon one…I thought they have invented teleport in US :p

    • The same seller also sells it for $60 more here if you feel like throwing money away.

Thanks for the tip; I got 5 disks for $1478.

        • so im guessing you offered somewhere around $300 a drive for that price, that's pretty good

        • @fr05ty: Yeah $300 exactly, after 5% off and combined shipping came down to about $296.

Good price! These Toshibas are epic, i have 5 of the 6TB versions hooked up in RAID5 on a real controller and the speed is incredible. I can get 1GB/s writes.
A little loud but they are designed for servers and DCs.

Thats not a bad price for HGST. AFAIK HGST have the best track record for reliability

      Yes they do:

      https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-failure-rates-q3-2…
(Although they are not in big quantities here)

I have been looking for new 4TB drives and the Amazon price for two HGST is about $360 landed, compared with about $435 delivered from Australian outlets. There is just the hassle of returns if they are DOA or die too soon.

WD reliability stats in that blog above are getting better - maybe now they own HGST, they are picking up better habits.

I wish Samsung were still in the spinning drive business. I still have a few 1TB Samsungs that are long in the tooth, but still going strong.

But a wd red 8tb is still about $1000!? You're killing me wd =P

    • Huh? Don't get the joke…
Ps: I bought wd red 8TB last week from Warehouse1 for $367.95

      • Haha that was a hyperbole.

But why is an 8tb consumer drive MORE expensive than the enterprise offering!?

        • Well these HSGT and above Toshibas are great prices.
Also all WD reds as so overpriced. I cant believe how much they charge for what is an entry level performance drive with a couple of flags in the firmware for RAID controllers. The funniest part is most people seem to use them in NASes which doesnt even require the flag…
