Velocity Frequent Flyer 15%-30% Points Transfer Bonus

530

Don't think this is targeted.
Seems like a good deal if you have a lot of points to transfer.
Unfortunately Flybuys isn't included it seems.

Perhaps its a good time to transfer across those AMEX points?

God damn! They had 15% just last month!

    • Yep, last month's one included Flybuys too, but this one seems to be short and sweet (without Flybuys).

      • If only they had flybuys, would have transferred over a large sum.

        • why didn't you do the transfer like 3 days ago?

        • +2

          Flybuys conv. 2000FB = 870 velocity

          Using 1c per point..

          2000 FB = $10
          Velocity= $8.70

Add a 15% bonus to Velocity and you're dead even. You didn't miss out.

        • Exactly what I worked out. Thanks for confirming.

  • +1

Perfect, all those AMEX points to good use.

  • Why no love for CBA again, I've been waiting for this!!

    • If your bank has auto-sweep (Westpac/CBA), count on not getting any bonus offers.

      • what is auto-sweep?

        • I presume that's when the bank gives you an option of automatically converting points to Velocity each month.

        • @Thrawn: I haven't seen that option for CBA.

      • +1

ANZ got auto sweep but always part of promotion

        • +1

Can confirm this - I got the bonus bonus points last month with ANZ (2x 15%)

      • +1

CBA has automatic transfer for Qantas, but not for Velocity. Still waiting for a CBA transfer bonus. Until then my points stay in my CBA awards account.

        • same. I've got about 160k Commbank that translates to approx 60k velocity at the moment. If I can get another 10k I'd happily wait

I don't auto-sweep my points, if that is available.

I'll be moving it over to KrisFlyer eventually

    • Last month didn't have CBA listed either, and i still got the bonus points. Might be worth transferring a small amount to see.

      • really? Hmm…

    • CBA didn't want to participate in the bonus scheme (since they'd rather you use your points with them) and so Velocity wasn't allowed to advertise the fact but they credited CBA transferees anyway. Not sure if its still the case this time around.

      • submitted 3600 points to test

btw, do you know much long it takes for points to appear on velocity? cheers

        • For most it comes up abound the next day, but it can take longer.
Also for me the CBA bonus points did not show up straight away i think it was a day or two later.

        • Did you have any luck with the CBA transfer?

        • @yessum: haven’t seen the bonus yet ..

        • @frostmournex: Damn, I'm trying to decide between transferring to Qantas, Velocity or Krisflyer and the bonus points would have made the decision a lot easier

  • +3

ive got a heap of amex points, that im accumulating but havent decided on which flight to spend it on

is it a good idea to transfer them to velocity to take advsntage of the 30% extra,

or should I leave them as is for flexibility reasons

    • I'd like to know this too, any point guru's out there with some expert opinions?

      • Me to

        • +1

The AMEX MR programs are amazing for their flexibility to use based on your requirements at the time. If you're planning a trip and certain flights that meet your destination and times become available then transfer to take advantage of the promotion, otherwise it might be best to leave them there.

It also depends on when / if you're planning to cancel your AMEX card. If you do plan to cancel, then you'll need to work out what to do with the points.

I can help people look for flights depending on where they're looking to go. PM with some details and I'll do my best to see what's available, whether its SQ or something else.

Another excellent use of AMEX point is to transfer to Marriott rewards via SPG to book one of their flight and hotel packages - see http://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morepack.mi for more details.

    • +1

Do you have a specific redemption in mind that your existing velocity points won't cover?

If you need the points, then transfer.

If you think you will need those points in Velocity in the near future, then transfer.

15% transfer bonuses are pretty common, 30% isn't quite so common but although the 30% bonus is tempting, I'm leaving mine in the AMEX rewards account for now because I already have a sizeable Velocity balance and the AMEX flexibility is important to me in case there is a better value flight outside Velocity.

I treat my AMEX points like they're a little bit more valuable and try to use the other points first - they're already locked into a program but AMEX can go more places.

      • Excuse my ignorance but what other airlines can you transfer AMEX points to? I am planning on purchasing flights one way to Vancouver for a year from now. I have found that i cannot transfer to Qantas, what other airlines can i transfer to?

        • Almost anything else apart from Qantas actually! I think most of the major airlines or some part of their alliances are there for AMEX to transfer. Its quite easy to check on the AMEX redemption website online for the exact ones that are available to transfer.

      • Thanks for the advice.
If assuming you don't have anything specific in mind, but with the 25-30% bonus alone, would it be a worthy value proposition to just take the punt and transfer them anyway? Basically sacrificing flexibility for the extra 30% value.

        Any thoughts? Thanks!

        • Do you have any other points in QF or VA??

If you're likely to redeem on Virgin Australia, Singapore or Ethihad in the future then I seriously consider it at the 30%.

My point are through the Explorer program so only convert 4:3, but I have been tossing up the idea of signing up for an edge card and linking my card to get the points into the amex MR point scheme which convert 1:1 and would push me into the 25% bonus category netting me a bonus 45K velocity points.

bugger just transferred 300k nab reward points last month with 15% bonus. Should have waited for 30% bonus oh well.

    • +5

How would you have known this was coming? Not your fault.

    • Ouch!

  • At what point is it a better result going from Amex to velocity then to krisflyer vs. Amex to krisflyer direct.

Provided output from Amex (1=1) is the same regardless

    • +5

      More than 35%

      • +2

You need to consider the fact that Krisflyer points would expire as well

        • That wouldn't be an issue. I have trips every year

  • Why Qantas never had this kind of offer?

    • They do, and the most recent one just ended last week. Only useful in very limited circumstances though as not many cards it applies to (direct sweep cards are excluded). I've used this a number of times in the past but prefer to use Asiamiles now. https://www.pointhacks.com.au/qantas-point-transfer-bonus-pr…

  • +2

Oh boy, last week transferred 110,000 from citibank 15% bonus.

This offer an extra 10%. Sweet deal OP

    • +3

Darn it, transferred 350k citibank point last month :(

      • lol I feel you

    • +1

      @ bbqwer
The extra 10% would only apply if your converted velocity points are 100k-250k..your 110k citibank would have given you 42500 velocity which still sits in 1- 50k bracnet for this offer….so nothing extra for u…

Is it worth it to transfer from Nab Rewards to Velocity points?
I usually buy Supermarket gift card $100 = 19,230 reward points
    Found in Nab Rewards store:
Redeem 3,000 NAB Reward points for 1500 Velocity Points
Even at best promotion rate 30% e.g. 300K Nab points = 195K Velocity points
300K Nab points = $1560 Wish gift card
195K Velocity points = $1083 Coles gift card
What is the best example use of 195K Velocity points?

    • +2

It's better use for business class redemptions. If you have any travel plans, definitely use it on flights redemption.

For example: BNE - PER business class return. The tickets are around $3600 ret, points = ~100,000 + $50 taxes. It's great to experience Virgin "The Business" lie flat seats.

    • Trying to figure this out myself

    • +1

195k velocity is approx 150k KrisFlyer.

Treat yourself to a 1st class Syd to Singapore, economy back.

I just checked dates for Syd - Singapore one way in Jan, 80k Krisflyer, SUITES so a good chance of going in the new suite.

      • +1

I would do suites SIN-SYD rather than SYD-SIN. Experience "The Private Room" - only in Singapore.

        • That's a good recommendation, although I was there in Sept and it wasn't much to write home about apart from the exclusivity itself!

      • How much in taxes?

        • When I looked one way yesterday Syd - Sin it was 94 AUD tax

Get a free KrisFlyer account and check it out yourself..

  • +2

Ahhhhh i just moved over 300k velocity points last month with the 15% from BOQ….
dam couldve had a whole 45k more :'(
    ahh well..

  • I'm looking to transfer nearly 500k citi rewards points and noticed that you can use Citi points with Amazon.
Maybe all these points bonuses are because of Amazon AU coming? Might hold off and see if its worth using at Amazon.

  • Quick question

My wife and I both have AMEX explorer cards with about 180,000 points each. Can we combine these points to get the 30% instead of 25%?
As far as I know you cannot transfer points to a family member any more - I'd like to be proven wrong!

    • If you have platinum edge, you can merge reward programs, meaning 180k gateways points = 180k ascent. Ascent points convert 1:1 krisflyer miles. Right? @MathNerd

      • I think there is a fee involved to merge Gateway to ascent.

I found you can do a 1 off 50,000 point gift per year, still wouldn't quite get me to 250,000 - I suppose we will just get the 25% which is pretty good too.

        • +1

@singlemalt72 been looking at trying to combine point balances before too, unfortunately not possible as you’ve possibly found out. Only 50,000 a year.

  • No fee. From my understanding the points convert 1:1 (gateways:ascent) unless it's a sign up bonus

  • Can you use velocity points to redeem on other airlines besides Singapore? Is availability good for first/ business class on available airlines?

  • Tempting - trying to suss out some flights but literally every rewards flight I search is sold out, whether it be in March next year or October next year. Never flown Virgin so is there something I'm missing?

    • make sure you include partners in your search you have to tick a box.

If you move to KrisFlyer you can book Singapore Airlines (in my experience to better value) and also other Star Alliance members

  • FlyBuys is included with a 15% bonus. It is advertised on the FlyBuys website. I also just transferred some and confirm that I received the 15% bonus.

    • I believe you are referring to the most recent transfer bonus offer which has just expired at the end of November.

      • Nope. The November offer was extended and now expires 10 Dec 2017.

        Copied from the FlyBuys website:

You still have time before Christmas arrives! Transfer your flybuys points to Velocity and receive 15% BONUS Velocity Points when you transfer before 10 December 2017.*

  • Well, how to transfer the Citi rewards points over to Velocity?

  • 1 Velocity Point per 2.5 Citi Rewards points transferred for Citi Gold (Visa), and Citi Platinum credit cards. Minimum of 25,000 Citi Rewards points per transfer.
1 Velocity Point per 2 Citi Rewards points transferred for Citi Prestige, Citi Signature and CitiBusiness credit cards. Minimum of 20,000 Citi Rewards points per transfer.

$100 Coles/Woolis cards at Citi Rewards = 20,900 Citi points
    $100 Coles/Woolis cards at Velocity Rewards = 18000 Velocity Rewards = 45000 Citi Points

    If I have 15% bonus,
18000 Velocity Points would need 39130 Citi Points.

So transfer Citi Rewards points to Velocity will lost almost 50% of its value.
    Am I right?

    • this is only if you decide to use these points to redeem for gift cards.

they are valued differently if you utilise for flights

    • Compare it with flights not gift cards from velocity

  • 2.5 Citi Rewards points = 1 Velocity Points?

  • Any CBA customers who did a transfer during the November promotion and didn't get bonus points (despite not being included in the promotion), try contacting Velocity. I just did and got my November transfers honoured with the bonus point. They said December won't be honoured though.

  • My one will be
1 Velocity Point per 2 Citi Rewards points transferred for Citi Prestige, Citi Signature and CitiBusiness credit cards. Minimum of 20,000 Citi Rewards points per transfer.
I want to get Krisflyer point as my destination more likely is SQ flight.
If I use 200,000 Citi Rewards point, I only get 100,000 Velocity point plus 25% extra? Is it gonna end up to 125,000 Velocity Point?
From 125,000 Velocity point then convert to Krisflyer which is 1.35 Velocity = 1 Krisflyer will be equally 92,592 Krisflyer Point? Is it correct?
One way business class to Singapore will be around $4000 paid by cash, definitely better than $1000 supermarket gift card with equal points.

    • Depending on time of year, business return from Melb/Syd/Brisbane to SG on SQ can be as low as $2800. You have to factor in that you can get up to 3 credit card points per dollar spent and mileage depending on status by buying a "cash fare" so the actual value may be lower than the scenario you have provided.

      • Sorry, my bad, its not business class but first class.
Basically same amount of point can get a first class which is $4000/way. I cant find any better way to claim my cc point now.

  • How long does it normally take to transfer Citibank to velocity?
