Sony Action Cam FDR-X3000 - HEINEMANN Tax & Duty Free

So you can only buy this if you a leaving Australia?

    • Pretty much that's how it is or arriving to Australia as a foreign tourist. You probably wouldn't be able to just go there and buy it unless you're leaving Australia or arriving from overseas.

In fact when you press the add to cart button it asks whether you're arriving or departing from Australia.

So i guess an international flight ticket is in order to get this. That is the requirement.

    • No, there's no restrictions for non flyers accessing the duty free store at Sydney Airport

      • No, there's no restrictions for non flyers accessing the duty free store at Sydney Airport

There is a restriction of getting it for the price in the title

      • I know it's your first post but you are wrong. Yeah sure you may be able to walk into the store and have a look around. But when it actually comes to buying some thing duty free (GST free) you would be refused without showing an international travel ticket.

There is a restriction for buying this item at this price. It's not for the whole public (well non international flight travelers) to buy.

Can I claim TRS on this also? If so…that's 312 - 15 dollars birthday coupon and 10% TRS = 267! That's pretty good price!

    • What can you claim TRS on a GST free (duty free) item?. It's already 10% less due to no GST. I doubt it.

    • You cannot claim tax if you did pay tax to begin with.

      • You mean to say you cannot claim TRS if you didn't pay tax to begin with.

    • +1

That seems like a better deal if you're travelling as the GST refund will be on the $424.15…

      $424.15 - $38.56 - $100 = $285.59

      it's $499 now?

      • Sure is!

      • bastards!

      • Now - 649, ouch.

  • No cash back if bought at duty free store?

    • It's not clear…

Correct. Para 5a of the conditions seems to apply.

      • +3

        i missed that…

Lay-by and purchases from duty-free, discounted or clearance eBay sales, parallel import stores and second hand purchases/retailers are excluded from this promotion.

So JB price would definitely work out cheaper.

This is a great camera with really good stabilisation, and great price at JB. I bought one earlier this year. Some accessories that are handy:
    * A mini folding tripod (eg here) so you can hold it as you walk around. Due to its shape, I found it hard to keep it horizontally level, this pistol grip tripod helped, and then if you want to set it down on the ground or a counter, you swing the legs out to form the tripod.
    * It should come with a GoPro adapter, but a good metal one in a different shape is the K-Edge Go Big adapter (eg here), pretty dear but it can help position it better on some GoPro accessories and its great quality.
    * I used the underwater housing all the time with this, but it really muffles the sound recording. If you don't need the housing's protection from water but want to protect the screen, it might be worth getting a Sony MC Protector which goes over the lens, though quite dear.
    * A GoPole or similar is great if you want to use it underwater or over the edge of a boat. If your setup has the camera upside down, either change the camera setting to flip the footage, or you'll need to do it in post production, as it doesn't do it automatically.
    * I used a 64Gb card, and when taking timelapse or video, I ran out of battery before running out of space, so extra batteries are handy. Original Sonys are expensive. The third party ones probably have less capacity and last shorter time, but good to have as spares. It doesn't come with a battery charger (you use USB cable attached to camera to charge it) so especially if you get spares, its good to get a battery charger. A good one is the Wasabi dual charger that charges two at once via USB, and you can get it here with two batteries.

    • It doesn't appear to have an optical zoom?

      • The GPro doesnt either, though. Only old people use optical zoom, the people that dont use action cams.

        • Only old people use optical zoom

Or people that want to zoom in on holiday trips without digital artefacts in their video…

        • @jv:
          In any case, https://youtu.be/I_8ZH1Ggjk0?t=26

You can use Premiere to zoom in an enhance the videos as much as you need.

          @hell0:

It's still digital… Optical zoom is analogue.

        • @jv: I don't think any action cams available have optical zoom. GoPros have never had optical zoom.

        • +2

The young don't have the life experience to know that optical zoom is better than digital zoom.

        • @laser:

No I don't think it's that though. An action cam is meant to be used for action-vids, where zooming in and out just isn't needed as you don't have the time but still require wide-angles. However, if you're over 60 and going to record the Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge all day because you are likely to forget anything that has happened due to memory-issues, then you wouldn't be using an action camera. But if you're young and skydiving over the Opera House whilst the old people are recording you and wishing they could be young again, you're not likely to be taking your narrow-angle handycam.

If you're recording the skydiver falling, just in case the parachute doesn't open so you can enter it in Australia's funniest home videos, you'll be better off with an optical zoom…

      • This isn't the sort of camera to get for zooming, better for video than stills though it takes good stills in good light. Its really wide angle, so you'd get it if you want wide angle. You need to be pretty close to subjects for them to be big enough in the frame to bother with. And if you take photos of people, keep them near the centre of the frame (so the wide angle doesn't distort them at the edges) and get a lot closer than you'd expect.

There's no display to see what you're shooting, so you kinda just point and hope for the best, or get the phone app and connect up to see what your camera is seeing. Its a bumma, but you do get used to what you're likely to get in frame.

In video you can simulate zoom in video editing software especially if you shoot in 4K, you can crop in quite heavily and still get good video.

  • In case any one else asks. No you can't claim TRS on this as it's a duty free sale which means no GST is applied to the sale. It's written in the terms for the TRS.

    "What can’t be claimed?

GST-free goods where no GST was paid"
