[SOLD OUT] Acer 15.6" Laptop: $399 with Free Delivery

240

Just got this email from big brown box today. They're doing a huge sale with free delivery.

I've been in the market for a laptop under $500 for a while now and this seems to fit the bill. Based on my quick google I think this is a pretty basic laptop but I figured for $399 with free delivery it's not a bad deal.

There's also 10" netbooks for $300, as well as some significant discounts on the higher end models. Least they look like that to my novice computer eyes.

Worth taking a look.

  • Can this play starcraft?

    performance with photoshop, adobe, etc?

    Still cheap nonetheless!

    • yes, it can play starcraft.

      • -5

YES IT CAN PLAY STARCRAFT 1, Anything can play starcraft 1, even my mobile phone can play starcraft 1

BUT IT CAN NOT play Starcraft2 at all it wont even load :) This laptop wont play 1080P xvid/mkv movies either. It may do 720P mkv files without glitching "only just though" :)

Overall its an awesome price for a nice laptop and will be great for photoshop, study, web surfing & general purpose

Can also play some old pre 2007 games without issue, but for 2008 to 2011 gaming and FULL HD xvid/mkv movies you may want to look for a laptop with a build in ATI/AMD or Nvidia videocard.

        • -1

Do you own the same exact laptop? How much did you buy it for previously?

Owh, sucks that it can't play 1080p or 720p despite having hdmi.

        • +2

It will play 720p and likely will play Full HD video but not guaranteed. Could be a bit choppy.

        • if you want a netbook that can play 1080P, get the EEEPC 1215N. I've had my eyes on one for a while :-)

        • +1

FFS, of course it will play full HD video, any bitrate, container or codec! I hope that bit of misinformation didn't put people off what was a stellar deal!

The T4400 is a respectable mid-range chip; if slightly dated; it's no bloody Celeron or Sempron! HD video doesn't need to be offloaded to the GPU for decoding, the CPU is more than capable of handling it in software decode! ;)

        • It won't be mid-range for long with Celeron probably becoming extinct.

It probably would play Full HD in all likelihood but there is no guarantee how fluent it would be.

        • +1

@camelgrass, true, but I wish I had a penny for every time the Celery line was supposed to be retired…it's had more comebacks than George Foreman! :p

The deal is, the T4400 pretty much a Penryn c2d just with VT, some powersave features & half the cache disabled IIRC! Performance is somewhere near a c2d T8300, so it's no slouch! I've seen (on my own systems) full HD with zero dropped frames or freezing on lower spec systems than this! Too many people equate older with obsolete, not the case if you're sensible about what you're using your PC for! ;)

Just to be sure I fired up a 12gb 1080p mkv on the missus' c2d T5250 laptop, which gets a far lower score than the T4400; no dramas whatsoever! Don't forget, just how much processing power do you think those cheap HD media players have, and they have no problems decoding the streams! It also helps a lot if you set your systems up properly in the first place though! :)

      • starcraft 2??

  • i have no idea. but here are the specs from the acer site: http://www.acer.com.au/acer/product.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=e…

  • Look like not a bad deal for a Dual Core T4400 that is under $400.

If the above spec is correct it's highly doubtful that it will play Starcraft II (I assume that's what lauthor meant since most any laptop these days can play Starcraft).
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Graphics-Media-Accelerato…

    • Yep, I meant Starcraft II.

  • So is this a good deal? Looking at just a basic notebook for a siblings, doesn't have to play games, just facebook emails, the ussual stuff.

Specs seem ok, as about a year ago we paid around $800 for a similar specced samsung notebook

    • The deal is quite alright. It should be enough to do most stuff.

    • I would say it's a pretty good deal if that's all you are after, they sale the same one at JB Hi-Fi online for ~$700.

I am emailing the company to find out what graphic card they have on this AS5738Z-442G32Mn model since I am getting different spec online but it's most likely going to be the GMA 4500M.

not too bad..RAM is upgradable to 8GB DDR3 and has an HDMI port..for $400 you can't go wrong!

  • pretty good deal, I bough an Acer aspire of similar specs (more storage: 4GB RAM and 500GBHDD, and ATI graphic card) in JB HIFI open special for $493 after Acer cashback

  • I found this laptop is actually advertised at their homepage for $599, price error?

    • No price error. It's on their ebay listing as well. It's also a discontinued model.

  • i think so. when you click on it, it takes you to the page i went to, and the price says 399. paypal definately only charged me 399. i triple checked!

and fyi i just had a quick look and it appears that this laptop is also eligible for a $49 cash back from acer (http://www.shopacer.com.au/ecprod/ACA/Projects/CashBack/Load…) .. which then brings the price down to $350.

    sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

note that the cashback offer is on until november 30.
whoops. eta - maybe not on the cashback. just double checked and the second part of the acer number doesn't match. ah well.

  • +1

definitely a bargain, $400 delivered for a new 15inch notebook is really good. wouldn't be surprised if they fix the price soon.

edit: cheapest on Staticice is $681
    http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=AS5738z&spo…

  • Bought one, :) Hoping i can claim that $49 cash back, because that would be bloody awesome.

  • me too! but yeah, like i said, double checking the spec number is not entirely the same. but fingers crossed anyway.

    • +1

You will not get cash back—different part number/SKU and also different model number.

      • Aw what you serious…..dammit :( Ah well, its still a O.K deal. Come to think of it, i don't remember seeing a laptop around this price range with a dual core, 2gb ram and wireless n. So yer its not to bad

        • +2

You've come a long way since this comment:

Work with Lenovo Laptops, i have found them to be the best build quality out of Acer and Dell. Chalk and Cheese, Acer are very poor imo.

Nice to see you're flexible for a good bargain! ;)

        • You have a long memory! hehe

  • ack dammit. still - $399 is still good!

  • I remember they had a take everything 5% off discount code ("Take5") for purchase over $500, doesn't seem like it's working any more though (or at least for this).

/Damn, gotta be fast around here…

    • Yeah cheap laptop goes really fast around here, I learnt my lesson from last time. Although I was still twiddling my thumb a bit since I think I might have gotten the last one.

  • Just got the last one on ebay xD

  • Hi xxx,

    Thank you for your enquiry.

Please be advise that if the particular Acer laptop model that you have purchased is applicable to the cash back then you will still be able apply for the cash back even thou you have received the item after the 30th of November. As long as the docket reflects the date before 30th November, however you will not be able to apply for the cash back until you have received the item, as you will need to have the serial number located on the back of the laptop.

Thanks, The Team @ Big Brown Box

    • whether or not it is eligible for the cashback depends on the SSNID (or something similar) of the laptop

  • Damn it missed the deal :(

Wanted to get one for my godsons Christmas present

  • +2

Bloody work! I'd have snapped up one of these myself, great gift!!! :)

I miss all the good bargains whilst ever I'm there; I might quit & become a full-time bargain hunter! :p

    • +1

Calm down mate, nothing to get too excited about—it's only an Acer! ;)

      • yeah, I'm shitting myself for missing this deal. And what's with all the Acer hate?
I used to have a Acer brand laptop and it was fine. At this price you can't complain, even if it was some ching chong brand.

        • +2

I hated the older Acer Aspires models where you had to push the slider to open the notebook. Damn thing snapped after about 3 months and the notebook wouldn't close properly anymore. That was a really stupid design.

        • same here

        • It's kind of an in-joke Wolfy, camelgrass & I had a bit of a discussion regarding m0tyrider's comment on another thread about Acer, you can see the original comment in my reply to him above! ;)

      • My Aspire was fantastic. Well built and the lid catch never broke either!

      • Don't worry dude, I got the in-joke! ;)
