Telstra 10GB for $39/Month Christmas Offer (BYO Device; 12 Mth Contract)

280

This Black Friday deal is back again for Christmas. They are offering $10 off their Mx plan (10GB data per month). This is a 12 month contract, minimum cost is $468, unlimited national talk and text. All support must be handled online (hence the 'x' in the plan title).

For new customers, and exisiting Telstra customers have to port over to a new number. As I've seen in the Black Friday deal, you can get 5GB extra data on top of the 10GB with some negotiation through webchat.

EDIT: Try using different browser/device if it doesn't show up straight away.

I'm currently on 12GB for $40 with Telstra. Got it through live chat.

    • X plan? Or normal?

  • +1

The 5GB extra (15GB total) only applies if you are adding a new service to an existing Telstra bill

    • +1

No it doesn't. If you wait on the page long enough a popup shows the offer. A lot of people have managed to get it and are existing customers re-contracting. I did it on a service on my account two weeks ago.

    • +3

You don't need an existing service. As long as you can convince a web rep, they can give you 5GB. If one doesn't, change to another.

  • any free apple music with this?

    • 6 months free

  • It's coming up as $49 for me.
Do I have to wait for a popup?

    • When I used Chrome, it didn't come up. But when I tried Chrome Canary/Firefox it came up.

      • Eventually came up but the rep wouldn't budge as I'm already on Telstra :(

  • Still shows $49 for me

    • When I used Chrome, it didn't come up. But when I tried Chrome Canary/Firefox it came up. Try different browsers/phone.

  • I struck out with my first chat trying to get the extra 5gb.

Would only do it if I had an existing service with Telstra.

    • keep trying, I wouldn't settle for anything less than 15gb for $39. I'm currently on 10gb for $30 which is out of contract and that's what they are offering me to re-contract…

  • +1

I got the telstra offer last month for 15GB, unlimited calls and texts for $39. Was handled on the live chat. That's a good deal for the Telstra network where you know your not going to have reception issues.

    • +1

I had to switch to Optus because of the Telstra reception issues in urban areas. A black spot at home they refused to acknowledge though we’re happy for me to pay for a relay to help everyone else out and work with a black spot scheduled to be fixed next year. Optus has been surprisingly good. I don’t think Telstra command so significant advantage anymore.

  • Just trying on my iPad to see if I can do it myself rather than negotiating through live chat and Firefox (iOS) says 10GB for $49 while Safari has a strike through the $49 and is instead $39.

I’m already on 10GB for $40 with the contract ending in January.

    • Your better off getting the iPad offer with Optus for $52/month for 24 months. iPad 9.7" 128GB 4G with 100GB of monthly data.

  • +3

I like the sound of this, especially if the extra 5GB can be negotiated via live chat, but what shits me to absolute tears is that as an existing prepaid customer, they refuse to entertain the notion of accepting me as a new customer (a new postpaid, contracted customer). I have to port out and port back in again, which is a fk around I shouldn't have to bother with. Why are they so difficult like this?

    • +1

+1. Boost is treated the same as Telstra Prepaid too - have to port out then back in again.

    • +2

Exactly. Prepaid users moving to postpaid should be treated as a new customer.

    • +2

As an existing Telstra customer I shouldn't have to port out and back in again every 12 months just to get a decent deal!

  • +1

I have a few services. It’s getting harder and harder to negotiate with live chat, plus it’s hard to keep trying different agents as they spend ten minutes confirming all your details and stringing you along despite straight up at the beginning asking for $39 with a bonus 5GB.
I recommend going for the $39 offer while it’s available without any negotiation, and if they don’t budge on the extra data just wait until it’s setup and then ask the billing team about the missing bonus 5GB - they seem to add it without any hassle.

    • LoopyLou:

they spend ten minutes confirming all your details

One trick that may work for that is based on a "script" someone from whirlpool used for porting numbers in via chat.

      via http://whrl.pl/ReBQ0H

Hi there, I want to activate a $30 Starter pack.
My name is BSArtist and my DoB is xx/xx/2000
My driver's lic is 9998348 vic issued
The serial number on the Starter Pack is 99883448724

The number I want to port from is Optus Prepaid 0433 445 566
Yes it is under my name

If you could create a pre-defined script that confirms all your details, just cut/paste that in with all the answers to questions they normally ask.

      • “Yes I can certainly help with that, let’s start with your name”

        …twenty minutes later…

“Sorry there are no special offers for additional data”

  • Optus currently has $30/month on a 12 month contract with 15gb data. unlimited local calls/texts.

    • any chance of price matching?

      • I tried and they refused
Said their service was better and cant be compared blah blah

        • +1

That's where you paste a list of all the news articles affecting Telstra outages in 2017.

        • +5

          @lysp:
I just tried also… most frustrating conversation… went along the lines of..

Me: Optus is offering $30 for 15gb, can you match this
Rep: No but i can offer $49 for 10gb.
Me: But you're offering less data for more money.
          Rep: we have better service
Me: I don't hear about Optus having outages
Rep: It's cause by the weather
Me: Does Optus have different weather?

          I gave up…

  • +1

Do I have to do something to get this to show as $39/month? Currently showing as $49.

    • disable ad blocker, worked for me.

  • +1

They wouldn't bend on the $39 for 15gb at all. I managed to get my existing 4G dongle and a SIM for my iPad on post paid with 21gb data shared between both for $54. I'm happy with that as it gives me a good amount of flexibility with the family. The $39 MX plan with 15gb was applied as was a 6gb (1gb+5gb bonus) $15 per month plan.

  • +1

I was on a BYO plan, 8GB for $40pm. After my third crack got switched to 15GB for $39. Worth persisting. PS, was 6 months in to a 12 month plan.

    • anything in particular that you said? I've had no luck at all

      • Huffed and puffed a bit:

Me: I'm enquiring about the current $39pm 10GB deal (with the extra 5GB popup offer).

Telstra: Blah blah, let's check your details.

Telstra: Currently you are on service contract till*****.

Me: Yes. I was chatting a few hours ago about this. Not sure why I'm repeating what I have already typed. I don't really understand why I've been transferred to someone new. My wife got the extra 5GB without prompting, and she was switching from prepaid to postpaid. I'm happy if you want to extend my contract out. I just don't understand why you'd offer the extra 5GB to some, but not others.

  • I tried to re-contract to this yesterday, still on a completed 24mth telstra contract and live chat wouldn't budge. Wouldn't just sign me up again, said it was new customers.

    Offered 10gb + 5gb bonus for $49.

So I said if I ported out then straight back in I'd get that for $39, why should I waste my and telstra time when we can just cut the middle process and just sign me up again, said he'll speak to his 'one up above' (got to love overseas support) came back and said 'my hand tie, cannot move on it'.
Was about that time I'm wondering if he's actually being held captive and sending hidden messages, but I was pi$$ed off that I couldn't get the deal so didnt really care if he was.

    So…
What's the cheapest and quickest option to port in and out again?
Any cheap sims I can pick up from woolworths tonight?

    • I just finished a port out and in and it was a complete disaster on the Telstra side. Made me consider cancelling the order and staying with Optus.

Even service stations should have a $2 sim. Optus forces you to recharge, but since it took two weeks for Telstra to port back it was necessary anyway.

  • +3

Managed to get the deal without having to port out and back in.
Guess it depends who you get.

    • May I ask for a few details, might make my dealing a bit easier?
Was there anything you specificly said that got them to do it or was it a just,

'I want this deal, am with telstra, switch me over'

Were you in a plan, finished post paid plan or pre-paid?
      Thanks

      • finished post paid plan.
I spoke with someone yesterday who offered me the deal without asking.
Contacted again today, got a girl that wouldn't do it at first, but did it after i said they confirmed my eligibility yesterday.

    • Likewise - if you have the chat transcript which you can share the non-personal part of - that'd be great! I've been trying for ages.

      • I do, but wouldn't know how to share it.
The chat rep would've been able to see via previous notes, assuming the previous rep noted the account.

        • +1

          went like this…

TelstraRep: Thank you for being online Wiki. After reviewing the account I see that currently your on a GO MOBILE PLUS BYO PLAN $50 + 10GB data per month and service contract ended .
TelstraRep: As I review your account, your eligible to go with our new byo plans.
TelstraRep: And we have a great news for you.
TelstraRep: That you will 5GB bonus data as well with our new byo 12 month contract plans.
Wiki: are you referring to the $39 per month Mx plan?
          TelstraRep: That's great!
TelstraRep: Sure you can go with the mx plan.

          and then today..

TelstraRep: Yes, that is an upgrade. However, since this is an upgrade, you're not eligible of the $39 plan as you have to get a new number or port over a number from another provider. If this is an upgrade, the eligible plan is $49 per month with 10GB.
TelstraRep: Do you have other Telstra postpaid services, Wiki?
Wiki: I have an email transcript conversation with TelstraRep confirming i am, and was actually offered by him
Wiki: i have two mobile services and a home cable which are all out of contract
Wiki: please read the notes on my account, or i can send you the email transcript
TelstraRep: Honestly, there is an eligibility criteria of the offer but if it was promised to you we must honour it. Let me check your account.

          *names replaced with "TelstraRep"

        • @wikiwiki: Thanks for that - appreciate it.

Tried again just now - no luck sadly. I'm prepaid, so not out of contract… ahh well.

        • @glenr: you'll just have to port to another telco and port back if you want to keep your number. otherwise just sign up as a new customer

        • -1

          @wikiwiki:

Yeah no luck here too. Is too frustrating trying to get through to them that it is a waste of both my and their time, and regardless on the $2k mobile plan that was just completed and the amount we pay for our nbn they won't budge.
Especially when it's been noted a few times that they can do it, they just won't.

It's a shame the coverage is so good otherwise I'd just ditch them.
I've had my number for over 10yrs, so I'm not changing it.

  • I just got this deal - coming from Boost pre-paid.
No issues at all, just asked for it and got it.
    Thanks OP.

    • How is this possible from Boost ? i am getting no where going from boost to telstra, the telstra rep keep saying its not possible

      • No idea. The guy told me to order the Mx plan then give him the order no., which he then used to apply the $10/mth discount.
He asked who I was with, and then checked a few things but didn't seem at all concerned.

        • Thanks for writing back , did you keep your number from boost or go for a new number with Telstra ?

        • Yeah, they were happy to port the number - it's part of the online application process.

  • Switched to vodaphone last night (came through this morning), jumped straight on telstra chat, got it started with the usual 'friend got an extra 5gb for signing up on the Mx plan, I'd like the same please'.
No worries, look up account details etc, then he goes
'I see you're currently on a $89 iPhone plan completed 11/11/17, you're eligible to switch to the Mx plan'

I think my neighbours down the block heard me scream from my lounge. After 6 tries, no one would switch me so I port out, and I get the 1 customer service rep that would switch me without doing it…

  • I just got this deal. I was on the existing Telstra 40 Mx plan with unlimited calls and 5GB. I am now on the $39 Mx plan with 15gb for 12 months. Thanks OP.

  • Anyone that signed up, did you have to wait for the sim to arrive or were you able to use an old sim to activate?

    • you'd have to wait for the sim to arrive.

  • Had a live chat about the plan and was told that on Boxing day, existing customers will be able to sign up to the plan.
Someone manage to swap the bonus 5GB data for $10 monthly credit.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5442102/redir

Hope I can get the additional discount as I am looking for plans under $30. Currently on the old Telstra F&F plan.

  • +1

I just asked live chat for 10GB + 5GB for $39/month and they did it on the spot. Coming from $40 (including $10 discount) for 7.5GB and was out of contract.

    • +1

same here got the deal 15gb for $39. I am coming from Telstra prepaid and the chat rep was happy to apply it after I signed up. Mind you it took me 3 online chat sessions before I was able to get it.

      • I managed to get the deal coming from prepaid yesterday as well. Wonder if they’ve slackened the rules? I’ve tried 4x before yesterday with no luck.

  • Anyway to get this on a non-x plan?

  • +1

Just got this deal, rep didn't need any convincing either. Was an existing customer that was out of contract. Mentioned the extra 5gb pop-up and was told no worries.

    Thanks OP!

  • +1

Thanks op (and all the commenters). Signed up to $39 @ 15GB!

  • +1

Another successful story, 15GB @ $39 pretty good with Telstra!

  • Glad I could help you lot grab this deal.
Ironically I switched to Optus (15 GB @ $30) the day after I posted this deal as they wouldn’t let me have this deal since I was already a Pre-paid customer and I had to port out. Ceebs.
Also free Premier League at Optus Sport swayed me away.

  • Spoken with 2 different chat agents and was told to go into a store and sign up to the $49 plan then head back to chat to get the $10 discount and the 5gb extra data. Saved both chats and was told it would be fine and I “wouldn’t have a problem doing this”. Note: don’t currently have any other Telstra products. Was just about to do it then decided on JB HiFi’s $49/20GB/$150 gc instead.
