Sony XAV-AX100 - Carplay and Android Auto Head Unit - $399.20 + Delivery from SuperCheap Auto

900
XMAS20

The Sony XAV-AX100 head unit is currently on sale for $499, RRP is $799 but is regularly on sale for around the $500 mark. Use the XMAS20 discount code ot get it down to $399.20. Delivery came in at $9.95 for me. This is the cheapest I have seen for this unit. Can be combined with discounted supercheap auto gift cards from other sources to bring even lower. Very cheap for a dual Carplay and Android Auto head unit.

  • Android Auto to control music playback, send messages, take calls or navigate via smartphone
  • Apple CarPlay integrates your iPhone seamlessly to make calls, send messages and get directions
  • 6.4 Inch Touch Screen with Bluetooth for hands free calls and wireless music
  • Use voice control commands to play music from Apple Music, Google Play music & Spotify
  • Hand Gesture Command
  • External Mic. & Remote Control Supplied
  • 3 x RCA Pre Out
  • Reverse Camera RCA input (camera sold separately)
  • (Navigation requires compatible smartphone, data charges apply)
  • Suits Aerpro harness APP8SP4 (Optional, sold separately)

I picked up this unit last month for about $450 after discounted gift cards. I am pretty happy with it. Does have its flaws but overall works well and I am happy with the unit. Touch screen is responsive, and sound quality is good. Takes about 10 seconds to start up but reverse camera will come on automatically once ignition is on. I think if you have it plugged into constant power then it will not need to do a hard reboot every time, but you physically need ot turn the unit off every time you get out of the car or it will stay off indefinitely. Much easier to just wait the 10sec start up each time. Also annoying warning screen comes up every time you start the unit which you manually have to press before doing anything (but reverse camera still works before you press the warning screen).

I had to spend approx another $160 on harnesses and fascia kits to get it to fit into my 2017 Nissan Qashqai. Installation took me about 2 hours to do. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions on installation or this specific unit.

Thanks to Regie69 for posting original deal.

  • Is it me or is the $393 expired Pioneer MVH-Z5050BT a much better deal? 7 inch screen vs 6.4 Sony. The last time I ever put in an audio player was back in the days of CD/MP3 players….the Sony sucked audio quality big time vs the Pioneer.

  • I am so tempted. But my wife will kill me.

    • Nah I wouldn't…If I was going to get a Android HU I'd get the $393 Pioneer…

too bad the deal has expired and cashback period…

  • anyone know how much it would usually cost to get an auto electrician to install this on a 2012 Honda Odyssey? the factory head unit is a double din so no additional bracket needed I think but will definitely need it connected to the reversing camera as well as the steering wheel controls.

    • +1

Id hazard a guess at about $80-$120 plus GST…

If there is no additional bracket needed it's just a matter of soldering the harnesses together? Shouldn't be more than an hour's job…

Not sure if the Honda's video output is RCA and 12V…if so it shouldn't be that hard for them..RCA (yellow) is plug and play. If it's a 12V then again it's also a case of splicing the Reversing Camera's +/- and connecting to the Sony's output cables.

      • awesome, thanks for the info!

Good price for local stock and a named manufacturer, but I prefer the Chinese made car specific head units like Dasaita. You get a 10.1 inch screen, screen mirroring, sd card support, 4G dongle support and full Android. Radio, steering controls, input for cameras etc are fully supported.

Have a look here. They also have an ebay store

There's plenty of Youtube videos showing what they can do.

  • Has anyone had one of these installed into a recent Camry or Aurion?

  • Anyone able to recommend a cheap reverse camera. Thanks

Not the cheapest but it works well with this HU. Installed it on my Mazda Tribute 2002 and the silver matches perfectly to the lip of the tailgate opener, looks like a factory install.

It all depends really what car you have, the above is the upside down hanging type but you might want a flush mount.

    • I got one that replaces the license plate light on my Honda jazz. No wiring drill through body holes required

Be warned that eBay had fake Sony drill through ones. I had to return mine.

  • Awesome thanks op, got it down to around $330 with gift cards and Cash Rewards.

  • Good deal. Wish I was able to install this into my Mazda 3 2015 :(

  • Does anyone know if it'll fit in a Subaru XV 2012? I don't use the factory navigation as it's out of date and updating it costs $200

I'm really not good with cars. can anyone tell me if I can fit this in my car? the website aerpro doesn't seem to sell double dins so I'm thinking it might not work?

    • I believe the website says you require a Facia to fit Double Dins into your car as well as some cable specific adaptors for the steering wheel controls and such. The OP said above that this Sony head unit us double din. I could he wrong maybe someone can add a second option but it does seem as though you require a Facia for your car.

  • Is it compatible with 2014 nissan pathfinder?

    • +1

Yeh for sure - put it into my 2017 Qashqai so setup will be almost identical. Will require fascia kit and swc adapters and a couple other chords- it’s about $160 all up.

  • Would love some help if possible. Not really into cars and would like this unit or one like it just so I can use the Apple car play and get my messages and use the maps without getting a fine for touching the phone. How do I work out if this will fit into a Ford Escape 2012 ZD? And if I need a fascia plate and anything else. Thanks

  • How much do proffesional installs ussually cost?

  • Thanks OP, bought….replacing a crappy Double Din i purchased off eBay that caused battery drain.

  • I wish this had more screen resolution. The specifications for the xav-ax100 is 800 x 480:

Definitely would like to upgrade to a head unit with Android OS but my $125 Sony Xplod MEXN5050BT from a deal 3 years ago was great value.

  • Thanks OP, I ordered one last night, I can wrap and put it under the Christmas Tree and then pretend to be surprised haha!

I have been wanting an Android Auto (and having Apple CarPlay is a bonus too just in case my wife wants to connect her iPhone or if i ever decide to switch back) head unit for a while. I had toyed with the idea for a while of trying to mount my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7" tablet in the dash and connecting it via BT to my existing head unit, but I couldn't work out any method to make such a large tablet fit nicely into my dash and look good (and still be removable).

I have been considering a Kenwood DDX9017DABS (glass capacitive screen, mirroring - for apps that won't work with Android Auto or CarPlay) but it is up around $900, so this Sony is a much more acceptable amount to get past the wife :)

  • Thanks Op, bought one!

  • Solid heat unit! I've had it in my Hilux for over 6 months and it does everything I want it do, only issue I've had is the Bluetooth/apple car play when accepting calls, I can't hear the caller on the line, same with work, I can talk to her but when she responds it doesn't come thru the speakers.. Only way to take a call is pulling the cord out and using the phone. Checked connections, settings and firmware on head unit and all look okay.

If anyone else has had the problem please let me know the work around :)

    • +1

On the iPhone, when it's hocked up, and you've accepted the call, press the top right circle button on the iPhone call screen, it should give you a set of options of where to direct the sound. That could be the problem, I don't have a carplay system but in my 13 Camry I connect it over Bluetooth and for some reason it defaults to internal speaker, the caller can hear me from my car system but I have to press the top right circle and select car audio and then I can hear the caller.

Could be a different issue for you, but give it a try.

  • damn this is tempting, but I am not sure if I should be spending anymore money on my POS car which I will most likely get rid of in the next 12-24 months………

  • Managed to get JB Hi-Hi to price match, so got it for $399.20. No Supercheap Auto’s around me had stock, so would be an extra $10 to ship. Had a look at it on display, looks great and reviews are solid.

    For $399.20 it’s a steal.

  • Put mine into my VT Senator using the Aerpro VT/VX double DIN fascia kit pretty easily. The volume down button on the SWC doesn't work though, did work on my previous Sony HU and all the other buttons work on this.. needs more playing I think..
