  • Saw some really cheap head units. Thanks!

    • Don't forget more selection in store :)

      • Will definitely go tonight!

  • +1

that Sony Xplod MEXN5050BT is actually probably the nicest headunit ive ever had the pleasure of using.

10 band manual EQ and super fast loading. I'll be heading out shortly!!!!

    • +2

I have a Sony non-BT which I paid more than this for. Really tempted to upgrade it. Wonder if the missus would notice :D

      • +3

Just explain that it's for safety and to stop you getting a fine.

    • any idea how it compares to the Pioneer DEH-X6650BT ?

      • +1

I purchased the DEH-X6650 last time it was on sale for the same price. Although a new 2104 model DEH-X6750BT) has just been released which looks virtually identical. Not sure whats new. This is a very good unit for the price price with bonus pack. Considering I was originally looking at the lower DEH-X4650 model at a higher price but glad I got this over the lower model at a better price.

Although it doesn't have digital DAB+ rado. It does have Short Wave Band 1 and 2 which is useless. Also the FX can be turned off through the settings. Head unit and colors can be fully turned off. Unlike the lower models that can only be dimmed. Also adds 2 line text information on the display instead of the usual single line.

Also when setting up my older Android 2.3 phone You need to do it from the phone settings and it worked perfectly. It kept giving an error when using the head unit to connect the phone. Also it is very annoying when selecting BT-Audio it always automatically start the Bundled Android media player on the connected phone. Which seems to be the only application the Pioneer Android app can use with the head unit controls

It was a great upgrade to a 10 year old pioneer model and it was really good except no BT, USB, hand free etc. But cost me twice that price.

        • Cheers mate. I have an iPhone so hopefully it will interface better than your experiences with android.

I did notice there was a new model so I compared the specs on the pioneer site and I couldn't see one difference apart from cosmetic which means at this price I don't think I can go wrong (I'm also replacing the stock radio from an old Pulsar so anything will be better!)

        • @skian:

Are you gonna do it by your self? I have got an old Pulsar too!

        • @Ahan: Yep I am planning on it. I Was debating on swapping the speakers as well but there's nothing wrong with the existing ones and they are actually Clarion ones (the car is the Q model from back in the early 2000's so perhaps they went a bit more upmarket with the speakers then!)

    • Got one of these earlier in the year, great unit. Sony were (still are?) the only ones with NFC enabled head units when I got it.

  • nvm… it says it on the main page lol

  • +2

    Anything with dab?

  • Any Carplay Headunits for sale?

    • The link above shows all items on sale for online. You have to go to your local store for full range :)

    • +1

a quick search seems that only pioneer are offering Apples closed system

  • Good prices, damn wish I needed one.

  • that sony 612bt is cheap.
can they arrange installation as well (I am on the gold coast)
any one know about how much to install including steering wheel controls?

    • +1

They are pretty easy to self install, even for a beginner. Aerpro have a range of cables that allow you to match the unit up to your cars wiring very easily. If you are replacing an existing double din unit, I think you could save yourself $100 and do it yourself.

      • +1

the nissan xtrail looks pretty simple to take out, no dash moldings covering the unit.
I just dont want to buy the wrong cable and have no steering wheel controls. I assum all cables will be ready to just unclick the old and click in the new harness?

        • +1

I just installed an older Sony double din in a 2007 X-Trail, but pretty tempted to get this one instead. The idea of being able to use the MHL/HDMI feature to watch youtube, easily view maps etc is tempting with this unit.

      • +1

That's the best way for a beginner imo. Cable is around 15 bux, direct plug into head unit and stereo loom

        • just did a search and it seems that for steering wheel controls its going to be around $130 for the harness (aeropro)!!
          http://www.ministryofbass.com.au/radio-harness/steering-whee…

        • +3

@PVA: It does come with a remote - in my old Falcon I had a Pioneer head unit and discretely stuck the remote using velcro to the steering wheel - a bit archaic but effective

        • @PVA: aeropro process are inflated check eBay

        • @bomber_bloke:
The steering buttons are for audio and phone though

Velcro, much better than blu tack I guess…

  • +1

Wow, with a pioneer deck, and a full set of Cobalt (6 fronts, 6x9 rears) you come in at about $120…..

That would actually sound bloody amazing considering Cobalts are designed to run off low power decks…. wow.

    • Yeah it's a pretty good sale ay :)

      • Well I have already purchased my MEX5050BT tonight, so everyone go nuts :P

The guy at the store didn't believe me till he scanned it. lol
I'll be going back tomorrow when they've had time to sicker and seeing what else is 'clearing'.

Those kicker 6x9's are amazing too. I have their shallow mount 6.5's and they blew my mind for clarity.
I go through a LOT of car audio, and I never expected 'cheap' speakers to be so…. perfect…. Hopefully the 6x9's are similar.

        • Me too! It also comes with a free Hoover car vac. Awesome price!

        • @Ahan:
Wait… free hoover car vac? what?

        • @MasterScythe:

Yeah. The one I got comes with a bigger box which contains the retail packaging for the head unit and another box for the Hoover.

This is the Hoover I got:
          http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Hoove…

If you look at JB's site there are two Mex5050BTs separately listed. I suspect one of them comes with the free Hoover.

        • @Ahan: Looks like I'll be getting the same one as no stores near me have the Pioneer in stock, the guy reckons the Sony is pretty much the same as the pioneer anyhow apart from looks and having NFC.

        • @skian:
If u are able to find those come with free car vac, get Sony!

I am having trouble with finding the right harness to connect the vehicle and head unit.

Please let me know how you go if you are considering using harness.

        • @Ahan:

          Nope; snip, strip, and solder-shrink
          http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=WH5670

        • @Ahan:

Adapt your car harness to ISO then get a Sony to ISO cable….ebay

        • @Ahan: I've got a Sony on hold, will be going to have a look after work. Mine's a 2002 pulsar what year is yours?

        • @skian: 2005

Just listed my vac on Gumtree ;-)

Nice bonus, but I have 2 x 12 volt rechargeable vacs I don't use & a 240v Hoover Quicksilver that I use for the car. For the house there's another 2 Miele vacs. All my vacs were free. Don't need another one. Life really sucks ;-)

        • @Ahan:

          Hi there:

I did manage to score two Sony units with the Hoover Vac, one for me and one for the old man.
The Hoover was a piece of $#@%!! excuse my language.

After less than 5 mins of operation from brand new, some stutter sound is coming from the unit.
I cleared the filter pod and tried again.
10 mins later, it does NOT SUCK at all. I can tell such, as the plastic flap doesn't even move.

Any advice on whether to return to JB or call Hoover?

          Cheers

  • +1

Does anyone know how much jb charges for installation of a head unit and speakers?

    • Not too sure, it says to ask in store or you could try asking their fb page :)

    • $120

Supercheap referred someone to me. He only quoted $77. That guy is based at south side of Brisbane

      • ah okay no worries. I ended up getting the 5050bt not sure what the difference is :S just jumped on the recommendation above?

Anyone know an auto electrician in syd as a possible alternative?

        • +1

The difference between the 5050bt and the 4050bt is the number of preouts.

4050 has 2 pair, front and rear (switchable to sub)
the 5050 has front, rear, and dual sub.

Even if you dont need them; dont stress over $25; you literally bought their 'top of the line' unit for $125. Win.

      • Jb might price match on installation

    • I was quoted $110 today.

  • Site is broken!!

    • working for me

  • Went for the Sony 4050BT myself, don't need the extrta pre out of the 5050BT. Great bargain very happy. They didn't even have the clearance sale signs up at my local JB so I'll drop back in tomorrow to see what else is good value. Might replace my 6" rears with 6x9's

  • Can anyone confirm if the Sony XAV612BT has navigation and also the ability to add a reversing camera?

Was about to buy this http://autogps.com.au/nissan-in-dash-gps-navigation-dvd-syst…

But will get the sony if it can do maps and reverse camera

    • No it doesn't have nav, however, it does have MirrorLink and if you have a compatible phone, then you can mirror your nav app from your phone to the head unit's screen.

Yes you can add a reversing camera.

      • Can anyone else confirm this, I've picked one up today but it'll be a while before I can connect it up, however this Tom Tom page seems to indicate Navigation comes with the unit:

        http://www.tomtom.com/en_au/products/car-navigation/built-in…

I was reading the Sony page for the unit before and it seems like for Australia this only got added with the 1.20 firmware update. Also the JB site seems to mention "GPS Available with Module", so not sure if they mean a software module or a hardware one :/

        • Ignore this, just realised iratepirate answered below

  • Waited forever for this sale. Now no longer have vehicle to put it in. My daily already has aftermarket set in place.

    So sad I wanna cry.

  • +1

csingh -> TomTom app is pre installed but you also need to buy a Sony XA-NV300T GPS module ($250) … So it will cost more in the long run BUT you do get maps that are updated…

    • In comparison, the current Kenwood KNA-G630AU GPS Module is being sold for $800 :o

    • Is there any aftermarket GPS module we can use with the item? Do you know where we can buy the reverse camera that works with it?

  • WOW!!! Just got the Pioneer FHX755BT double din for $107! SO GOOD! Picking it up tomorrow and then having some fun next week putting it in!
I also wanted to get two sets of the Orion 6es but $19 shipping killed it :( I'll see if I can go to a store and find em
    Thank you for this post!!!!

    • +2

No problem bud :) There are going to be some cars bouncing around this wknd lol

      • Anyone ever tried installing a double DIN HU to a 2nd gen (2010-13) mazda 3? Is it difficult? I think the factory panel must be replaced completely with an aftermarket fascia, how's their quality?

Also has anyone replaced their stock speakers? How difficult is it?

Sorry I'm a newbie in car audio installation. Thanks!

        • Sure have. It's a bloody nightmare because that whole centre panel has to be replaced, and it has buttons built onto it. euch!

Normally I just buy an amp and use the high level inputs. The head unit isnt so bad.

        • @MasterScythe:
Do you know what size is the stock front speaker and if we can install a larger speaker? Is it difficult to remove the door panel?

  • Does anyone know of a single din stereo, with a rear USB port, that will work with a 200GB external HDD? (Preferably with blue display.)

    • HDD? no, they draw too much during spin-up.
      SSD? yes.

You'll need to use a tool to format the drive bigger than 32GB to FAT32 if you'r a windows user.
      Linux can do it natively.
      http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/format-f…

Be SURE to use 32KB clusters; maybe even try 64KB and see if the player can read them (unlikely).

To be safe, just due to the size of the FAT it has to cache; I'd go for a 128mb USB stick and call it a day…

      • 32GB EMTEC from Dick Smith FTW

        • Couldn't find 32GB emtec on the DSE site. But their own brand is ~ $25. I'd need 7 for 200GB = 7 x $25 = $175. And we own two cars. Then we've got to swap them to find the music we want.

Decent DVD-R discs, were about 70 cents last time I checked, I think… So would need 43 discs = 43 x $0.70 = $30.10… That's cheaper, but more of a pain in the neck switching discs constantly.

Another option was to get an Apple phone as most stereos have the fitting (mainly on the front panel). But seriously… Cables hanging out of the front of your car stereo getting tangled up!?

There's really not one car stereo made that can do this? Pfft… So much for their constant crowing about technology going ahead in leaps and bounds! ;-p…

      • +1

Yeah, sadly that means I'd have to buy 1,563 sticks. Which is why I want a stereo that just plays from a HDD/SSD. It was years and YEARS ago, that people started making their own car mp3 players out of computer motherboards mounted in the car glovebox or boot, powering them with an inverter, installing Linux, LCD screens, and infrared remotes by running wires through car air vents, etc. I can't believe after all this time there is still no-one making a car stereo capable of this. But speaking to a guy at JB Hifi seems to confirm it as true.

        • You can make up or buy a Y-cable. It would allow you to connect the usb data lines to the car stereo, but draw power from another source, say a cigarette-usb adapter. Worth trying if the higher power draw is all thats holding it back

  • Not all JB Hifi's do car audio huh? Only some stores, is that right?

    • Correct

    • yes their website shop locator says it all

  • I walked into my local JB Hifi which does car sound installs and a bloke said they are closing the section off and no longer doing installs….. abit surprised at hearing that.

  • Any thoughts on the pioneer double din vs the Sony at same price? I'm guessing they'd both have same output and hands free calling ? How about the con 2/way Vs kicker 3/way speakers? Thanks all

    • Sony has 5v pre-outs, a very nice bonus if you're running amplifiers.
Pioneer however has the nicer, yet less flashy interface.
Both are good; just stay away from Alpine.

Alpine are doing what sony did (and have now stopped :P); riding on their name. Doing the bare minimal and cutting every cost. Sony lost most of its customers and is now clawing back.

      Anyway; get the kicker.
6x9 has about the same surface area as a 7.5-8" sub, and if its one thing kicker do well, its bass reproduction.

Google the model number even; I'm only rocking their 6.5's; but never have i seen near 100% positive reviews before but google those 6x9s and be amazed. EVERYONE loves them.

  • Could anyone recommend some 6.5's for a Hyundai Getz? The sound system I currently have (stock I think) is driving me bonkers.

    • Kicker 6.5's.

Mate has 4 of them all around; I've never heard a better speaker especially off head unit power.

  • Any ideas about installing Pioneer double din unit in Kia Magentis 2008. Do I have to have Car Wire Harness , Antenna Adaptor and Steering Wheel Control for this. Any recommendations for installers in western suburbs ??? Here is the pic for the attached unit in my car : http://aerpro.com/sites/default/files/images/console_picture…

    Thanks heaps.

  • is it a standard double din?

    • It is a standard double din with a cassete player at the bottom. I have attached a picture for your reference in my previous post.

  • Interested with the Kicker KS693. Do you think guys think it can be powered by the stock HU? Otherwise the JL Audio amp looks tempting as well

  • Been meaning to change my car stereo for a while… Could someone provide some advice, or guide me where to look to change mine?

It's a 2011 Corolla, with stereo unit that looks like this:
    http://ninemsn.carsales.com.au/CarStockGallery.aspx?R=SSE-AD…

My steering wheel also has the same buttons. Would this be a simple swap? Thanks in advance!

    • Adapter for steering wheel controls would be as much as the head unit.

      • So it's not worth changing?.. The car audio I have at the moment isn't really what I call enjoyable, so was really looking forward to changing it out.

I've searched everywhere for tutorials, but I can't seem to find one for my car D:

        • +1

Depends how much you'd like to spend.
generally Toyota's head unit is quite decent. most of the time the speakers are the one letting the sound down.

The head unit is wider than the standard din size so you'll need spacers for the side if replacing with 2-din unit. or spacers + socket if changing to a 1-din size.

I just replaced the head unit in my toyota, it should be the same for your car.
          spacers/pocket $10-$20
Steering wheel to car module & harness $100 (or $15 if you dont want steering wheel control)
cable from module to stereo $15
          stereo to iso harness $15

It is a simple swap, the hardest part would be opening your dashboard without scratching anything.
          Not hard if you're careful.

          Good luck

edit: yours should be the same as this:

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbXAPJOpH-c

        • @yomama:

Thanks for the information, its really helpful!

Are all those parts available from JB HiFi?

        • @kirynflare:
Jb only had the spacers/pocket. repco/Autobarn/SCA sells everything. (repco was the cheapest for me by $1-2 each)

If the part for your car/stereo is out of stock, they can order them in(or ebay)

Check the required parts for your car at aerpro.com

        • @kirynflare:

Aerpro make all the extra necessary parts you will need when replacing the factory car head unit/stereo in your car. These can be purchased from car auto shops such as Repco, Super Cheap Auto and Autobarn or online such as Ebay Selles. Although they may need to order them in. Repco is usually the cheapest.

They also offer two types of gap fillers for after market car stereos. Toyota pocket if you want to install a smaller single din head unit. Toyota left and right bracket when installing a larger double din head unit.

If purchasing the Pioneer you will also need the Pioneer to iso harness 14 pin

        • @kirynflare:

          ebay if not.

you could try without the expensive steering wheel adapter.

It'd try a set of high sensitivity speakers first before changing out the head unit.

        • @Steptoe:

          Any recommendations for speakers? :)

(I believe there's 6 speakers there currently, two small tweeters? in the front corners of the car, one in each of the front doors, and two near the rear window?)

  • apparently if ordered b4 3pm same day pickup, still waiting for email and store will close in 50 min?
