  • love my d3300. great great starter dslr for photographic lovers.

    • What do you recon about d3400 as a starter?
M so tempted to buy this but holding trigger for Canon 800d. Please advise

      • +1

The only difference with these bodies is the ISO range, which is proably very similar. You can get good reviews and comparisons of various bodies and lenses at various ISOs at dpreview.com. Read my comments below too.

      • personally, i really only need a DSLR to beginning with coz i know i will be upgrading to Fullframe in the future.

This deal is just simply too good to pass on, the cheaper the higher price-value. And both cameras marked as "beginner", I don't think there will that much difference between them function wise…..just my 2 cents

      • Full frame bodies are expensive and harder to use. I would recommned sticking to crop bodies.

        • Agreed, also the range of lens for full frame are still very expensive and far more restricted.

    • +2

my son has the d3300, its a great starter camera and at the time offered more per $ than Canon.

also kogan have cheap lenses every once in a while on ebay.

not sure if the fieatures on the d3400 justify an upgrade ( wireless ) for him.

great price for somebody wanting to get into DSLR photography.

      • totally agree

  • Great price. Useless lens, sell it and buy something wider eg 24-105, or cheaper. Buy an external flash that can point up. Shoot RAW. Do not use ViewNX, use something else. If you can get Canon for the same price I would recommend buying it just for DPP, with the above points still applying.

    • Good advice, but if you're suggesting going wider, 24 is less wide than 18.

      • +1

Yeah, sorry, I meant more wide apart, ie longer. 24mm on a crop camera is 36mm, which usually means one step (legs) back compared to 18mm. That's why pros use 24mm on a full frame body. 36mm is occasionally not wide enough.

Why every time such deal reminds me that i should have more amex cards..

  • +4

Wonder if you can get jb to pricematch and keep the $100 giftcard: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/nikon/nikon-d3400-dsl…

  • Jb is selling with 55-200 lens for $611 + $100 gift card.
I am thinking to buy that. Better value

    • +2

You can't use that lens in a smallish room with a crop body as the lens becomes 82-300, eg you can't take four people in a row in an average size room. Changing lenses is a not really viable for most people, get one good lens. Professionals will have a 24-70 on one body and a 70-200 on another body, and carry both around. Each of those are $3K.

    • tbh the 35/1,8 + kit lens is all you need. (about 200$)

you really need to understand a lot of things before buying anything, better buy one at a time and make sure watch review video in advance. try to test it in the store if you can (even if you are not buying from the store)

      • Why would you need two 35mm lenses? People will get turned off photography with the horrid kit lens. Try it out in store compared to a 24-105 or similar.

        • i believe bokeh is what ppl usually want. and F1.8 does that.

        • Here come the negs. I stopped trying to help beginners for a while after the amateurs negged me. I've been shooting professionally for 35 years. What are you going to shoot at 35mm with bokeh?

      • Ok so as a starter i should go with harvey deal and spend 397 ?
And it would be better deal for me as a starter? Sorry dont know much about dslr usage. Thanks

        • Useless lens, sell it and buy something wider eg 24-105, or cheaper. If you want to take photos inside you will need an external flash that can point up. Thats adding almost $1K to the body. Built in flash is horrible. Borrow a friends for a day and go shoot a friends party on P. See if you like it. Shoot RAW. Do not use ViewNX to correct, use something else. If you can get Canon for the same price I would recommend buying it just for DPP which is free with the body, with the above points still applying. Look at dpreview.com. Try to avoid bad advice. :)

        • it’s a great starter kit and will take much better pictures than any mobile phone on the market , and forseeable future actually, the std lens is ok to get started, and for some people it might be the only one they will ever buy due to weight, money or interest or how important it is for you personally.

if it turns into a hobby / passion you can get accessories for the nikon on ebay.

fast memory cards are a good idea as it’s 24 megapixel, especially if you record video.

        • +1

          @abacus: Thanks Abacus. Much appreciated
And don’t get upset with negative people, everyone have their own view. Keep doing good stuff. Thanks

        • Thanks, good luck.

  • Hating myself for not registering for the Amex card when it was posted. (At the time just thought I didn't want another CC under my name.)

Is $397 no cashback still a good price? I've been meaning to get started on DSLRs.

  • This is single greatest price in history of d3400. Buy this pair it with 50mm f1.8 lens and 70-300mm lens. You would be set.

    • 50mm on a crop body is 75mm. See my comment above on 55-200 lens.

    • I guess. The D3300 was going for $300 regularly and as low as something ridiculous like $250 new with lens for a while.

    • I mean, its been cheaper, but yeah it's a great camera.

  • +1

The Canon 1300D is a lower price at The Good Guys if you haven’t got an Amex.
Selling for $468; less CAMERA15 code is $398; less Canon cashback is $368; and less cashrewards is approx $358.
What lens you’ll want will depend on what you’re most interested in photographing - portraits or landscapes or wildlife, etc.

  • +2

Man people are really crapping on the kit lens, I think its quite good. The image quality is fine, you'd have to be pixel peeping to tell the difference between the 35, 55-200.

    • I've used the same camera and lens using studio lights and you don't need to peep at pixels, the difference is very obvious compared to 24-105 f4.

      • +2

Out of curiosity, how much does that 24-105 f4 cost on Nikon? Because on canon (which I shoot on) that lens costs $2000ish new or $1000 used.

I can’t imagine someone wanting to invest that sort of money when they are looking to buy a beginner $400 crop sensor camera.

        • Not only that, but it's not worthwhile putting that lens on a crop sensor camera.

        • I did some research and Nikon doens't make a 24-105 F4. The Canon 24-105 F4 sells for $1600 from Kogan but I saw it for $850 from cccwarehouse.com.au but don't know anything about the seller so can't recommend them. you can get cheaper lenses https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/nikon-af-s-dx-nikkor-18-140mm-f…
          etc etc.

My concern is that if you stick with the 18-55 lens it will put people off photography whereas something like the 18-200 can inspire.

  • canon 1300d is also available for 398, plus cashback! I would go Canon any day, because of better and cheaper lens selection. Canon provides a number of optically superb lenses under $300 each, I have 3 of them in my kit, and no reason to go more expensive unless you do it for profit :) the only reason I would choose Nikon d3400 is video, but I don't care about video

  • 0 mention of the Bonus 500 6"x4" Prints on the website?

    • Yes, that offer was last week. It seems like it has finished now.

  • +1

Buy a $3 item and use the AMEX offer (If you have it saved).

  • cant you get this price matched with jbhifi and get the $100 voucher? https://www.jbhifi.com.au/cameras/dslr/nikon/nikon-d3400-dsl…

  • Nice deal - great sensor (better than Canon entry level) - lens is reasonably sharp - but appears to be no VR in lens which means you may be looking for a lens upgrade fairly quickly.

  • im travelling in a few weeks, would anyone recommend this for a beginner photographer - someone who takes pictures on their samsung s7 edge? I would just be using the standard lens that comes with the pack as I know very little about cameras. thanks

    • this would be fine. Alternatives being

Sony a5000 or 6xxx series (bad battery life)
      micro43 (smaller)
      Sony rx100 (smaller again)

Generally the smaller the camera, the smaller the sensor - low light/ night time photos become more difficult

The most important things for travel photography for the half a55ed (having owned most of the above)
      1. Touch screen to focus (or good autofocus like on canon 70d/80d)
      2. Acceptable weight
      3. Need long focal length of 18-150ish either in a single zoom lens or carry a second (you would need to buy another zoom with this camera I would suggest)
      4. Tilty flippy screen
      5. More manual dials make life easier
      6. Tripod or a joby
      7. Fast at least class 1 SD

  • Please post if someone was able to price match with jb for 397 and still got the $100 voucher. Thanks

    • +1

Just bought 1 and the staff happily did price match. Also got $100 voucher on the spot.

      • Did you buy in Melbourne coz I asked and the guy said cannot price match coz the deal is not similar. So I ended up buying twin lens kit for 611 which I think is not bad.

        • No I bought it in Sydney

        • @Tipu: I thought so. Coz there were only 2 places that have this camera with single lens. Most of the places have twin lens kit. Thanks

        • @jag3932: Also the good thing is 55-200 is VR and cost 200 otherwise. So I am happy with it.

  • If the lens is not VR lens, is there Vibration Reduction in the camera body ?
Does anyone know how much for this camera with the VR lens ?
I noticed that the Kogan and Dick Smith listing is "sold out" probably so that people cannot ask for a price match.

    • According to a user on an older post of mine

"Thats the newest AF-P 18-55 lens with the fast focus and newest VR (third generation, if we want to call it that). Great performance from that lens, excellent sharpness, super fast focusing, very good VR. Only weakness is heavy and deep reaching vignetting for the first stop and a half, distortion when shooting wide and lack of switches for VR and focus control"

      • I suggest looking at the 5 product images in the HN ad. Nowhere on the lens (front or top) does VR appear. Nikon unfortunately followed Canon down this route of cheapening their kit lens offering. That said, the price is still very good and the lens is still far from useless. The Canon 1300D kit also has non-stabilised lens.

        • Yes you are correct. I watched the video that is before the photos and the lens has vr written on it so that's a bit sneaky on their part.

  • I got one of these when they had a pretty similar deal early this year at HN. So far very satisfied with the product.

  • Got one, Thanks. Has anyone managed to find a deal on a SLR camera bag? preferably Lowepro or similar?

    • Did you got from Harvey or JB?

  • HN Mornington Price Matches the Good Guys offer at $338

  • TGG have now removed it from their site.

    • They have it on display for $397 @ Marion - then again, there's a Hardly's right nextdoor.
