Best price I can find anywhere for this router. Keep an eye on postage cost as Computer Alliance has the same router for $379 with free postage, 10% off that with PUNCH code is $341.10. EFTPOS card redemption offer expires on the 31st but should be fine, just get your claim in quickly.

Trying to resist the temptation to upgrade my RT-AC68U, for not much gain I keep telling myself.

Do you even know how a router works?

Why do you need a dual-band wifi router?

    • Why wouldn't you want a dual band?

  • Trying to resist the temptation to upgrade my RT-AC68U, for not much gain I keep telling myself.

    What are the differences?

    • Nothing that will help your internet speeds

  • Just a reminder, a simple Ethernet cable will beat this any-day

    • +3

What is the range of an Ethernet cable? :)

      • +3

Actually, longer than the wireless coverage of this router, but the point you were trying to make is still valid.

      • Larger than the 40m cable I use.

        • How many walls can your cable go through? Can you easily move your cable from room to room? :)

        • -1

@eug: How many online games do you lag in? Never mind everybody already knows it's ALL OF TNEM!

        • @Axelstrife: No idea, I don't play online games. :)

    • True, but not dramatically so - SNB's Four Stream Performance, in wireless bridge mode, approximate 900Mb/s is very comparable to throughput using 1000Base-T.

  • Is this better than NetGear ORBI RBK50 ?

  • I am thinking about purchasing the AC68U tomorrow - not across all of the differences, I am sure that there are some good improvements, though $140 minus eBay 10% off is a lot easier for me to swallow.

    • Where is the AC68U available for $140 on eBay? Cheapest I could find is ~$159 and that's factoring in the eftpost card.

      • AU stock is $199 though if you don't mind T-Mobile branding on hardware and no built in modem, you can get it new for $140.

        • I was considering the T-mobile version, although I was reading on a previous deal thread that it has a different CPU compared to the most recent hardware revision from ASUS.

For example, the one you linked above has the BCM4708A0 CPU which is 800Mhz as opposed to 1Ghz in the Australian models.

        • @Lorindor:

Just came across that thread, not sure how much of a difference 800Mhz vs 1Ghz makes in reality. Might be willing to take the risk for a $60 saving, and they claim to offer a 1 year warranty.

        • @Marrk:

There are also other differences, but I'd be happy to pay ~$160 for this one which is Australian stock.

        • +1

@Lorindor: You have a point, probably worth the extra $30ish dollars for AU stock.

        • +1

if you don't mind T-Mobile branding on hardware

Be aware of US and non-US models' channels & power differences.
Also, 1024-QAM modulation is not a standard 802.11ac.

        • Since you guys are talking about this, I'm thinking of getting a Modem+Router with proper MU-MIMO impementation, spotted any recommendations/deals?

        • +1

@xrailgun: In terms of deals The Good Guys have 25% off networking and JB Hi-Fi has 20% off. If you are looking on ebay, you can use the 10% off coupon.

Don't know enough about the tech side to make a recommendation, I am personally after a good Wi-Fi router to bridge to my existing ISP router.

        • @Marrk: Cool, never saw the 20% off JB Hi-Fi. Is it in-stores only, tomorrow (26th) only?

        • @xrailgun: The discount is applied online too.

  • If your spending this amount on a router, consider a mesh solution or a Ubiquiti Amplifi or Unifi.
