  • Great price on a lens, however unfortunately this model lacks IS, and I believe is from mid 2000s. Still a great price on a fool proof investment.

    • +1

For wide lense is is mostly unnecessary. You'll see the same thing with the 16-35.

      • +1

Yeah generally for landscape photography you'll be on a tripod anyway, and even if you're not the view is so wide that you won't really need IS

        • For me the 17-40 f/4 would be the "general/everyday" lens for me. By doing that, I need IS as I shoot video daily.

        • @Hungrybonegaming: There are probably better options for you out there than this lens for general/everyday duty then. Are you on a crop sensor?

        • @chartparker: I'm currently on a crop sensor (600D), using an 18-55mm. However looking at getting a 5D Mk 2 or 6D. Therefore the 17-40 would be alright, however maybe the 16-35mm f/4L IS might be a better option.

        • @Hungrybonegaming: Either the 17-40 or the 16-35 might be a bit wide for everyday on a FF if you upgrade to a 5D or 6D. The 16-35 IS is nice, but quite a bit more expensive and also heavier.

        • @chartparker: In that case what will be a good every day lens for a FF and crop sensor. Been looking for ages and can't find anything worth it :/

        • @Hungrybonegaming: I'd look at either the Sigma 24-105 or Tamron 24-70. They've both upped their game quite a bit in producing decent lenses for Canon/Nikon for reasonable money.

          edit: There's also the Canon 24-70 f4: https://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/canon-ef-24-70mm-f…

The Canon 2.8 is nicer but double the price

        • @chartparker: I might have to see. That wouldn't be of much use on a crop sensor, also a bit out of my price range ;)
I've been looking at the 24mm f2.8 STM but it lacks IS. Otherwise might just stick with my current lens in a f*** it solution haha.

        • @Hungrybonegaming: You'll be struggling to find a lens that works for both FF and crop. The 1.6x factor kind of throws it out way too much.

        • @chartparker: What about a lens just for a crop sensor. Getting the full frame upgrade will happen later on, and will be a side photo shooter next to me 600D oddly, instead of taking it's place as my main camera.

        • @Hungrybonegaming: Almost like you're copying me - I started off with a 600D, then got a 6D along the side for purely landscape, then sold the 600D and got an EM10ii… and then decided I hated carrying around the 6D and sold that too. These days I do everything on my little Olympus.

If it was me, I'd go for this as an everyday crop lens: https://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/sigma-lens-17-50mm…

  • What kind of shots would suit this lens best?

    • Wide angle cat portraits.

    • Landscape. I owned and loved this lens over pretty much all of the more expensive Canon L lenses. It's light, rugged and cheap with incredible sharpness (except in the corners)

  • This lens is the older design and is a bit soft. Still it’s a very robust and Versitile ultra wide lens.

  • Now give us a good deal for Canon 6D Mark II.

  • Feel like this was probably a much better deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/352173
