Notes: This item must match the Xiaomi multifunctional gateway to use

  • Can anyone tell me how it differs from tis?

Two different items, For this , Gateway is not required, but for this ( Or posted in the deal) , gateway is a must.

      • But essentially it does the same thing?

        • +1

This one needs a bluetooth gateway to be accessed remotely, I know the new yeelight wifi/bluetooth table lamp does this.

Just on it's own you need to have your phone in bluetooth range to use features via the app.

          @FickleRick:
When you say this one, do you mean the item listed in the post or the item i'm asking about?

The item i'm asking about has:
          Main Features
          ● Wi-Fi enable thermostat allows for remote access via smartphone, tablet or computer
          ● Via Mi app to open humidifier when indoor humidity is too low and open air-conditioner when indoors temperature is too high
          ● LED digital display, you can get temperature, humidity and battery power easily
          ● Built-in advanced Sensirion temperature and humidity sensor, temperature accuracy: 0.1 degrees, humidity accuracy: 0.1 percent RH

          I like the fancy display

          @wikiwiki:
Yeah that's the one I'm talking about. This is a marketing error, I'm pretty sure it only has bluetooth built in. Check xiaomify YouTube channel for an in depth review.

Crap price. Better and newer Aquara version was much cheaper here
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350924

    • What is the difference between the Aquara and non-Aquara models ?

      • Aqara also does pressure

      • Yeah pressure/barometer which is an indication of whether it will rain or not

        • OK thanks guys. So not much difference if you are not worried about recording pressure.
That said, since the new model is currently only US$8.99 and I need like 3 of them (this deal limited to 1) maybe I should just get the new model anyway.

Im waiting on a good deal on the gateway. Best Ive seen active at the moment is US$19.44 at DD4.

        • can't argue with that! @julz
@systmworks What is your plan? Why 3? You need to connect them to a gateway.

        • @pal: yup I just bought the Gateway, 3 temp sensors, and a door sensor.

3 temp sensors for different rooms of the house - probably 2 bedrooms plus living room.

        • @pal: I'll add I already have a Vera home automation controller, but it does not integrate with Xiaomi devices (which are so competitively priced) so am also testing the HomeAssistant software on a spare RPi3.

AU Zwave temp sensors are around $80+ each so $10-15 ea for Xiaomi is so much cheaper even after dropping ~$30 on the hub.

Hub plus 3 temp sensors is cheaper than a single Zwave temp sensor.

It is true. It was my first time asking for a code. I almost didn't post it, but then I read someone said they wanted a deal and I hadn't found better. Thanks for pointing it out, though, because I wasn't feeling super confident about it.

      • +1

Just because this isn't the cheapest price ever. doesn't mean it's not the best deal available right now.
Thank you Codify for going to the effort of finding a good price and sharing it with us.

If anyone can find a cheaper price, post it!

    • Just a note : I have 3 of above Aquara, two of them are showing inaccurate temp, or 2.5C above actual. Not sure whether you can do any calibration.

      • Probably no calibration but most temp sensors can be adjusted via an offset in monitoring software.

If anyone is looking at integrating the Xiaomi gateway/devices into HomeAssistant (free home automation software) here is a useful link
    https://smarthomehobby.wordpress.com/2017/10/21/up-your-smar…

Interestingly, it also advises the correct pronunciation of Xiaomi. In my head I always thought of it as "X-O-Me" (totally wrong).
According to the article, its pronounced like "Show-Me" (except "Show" is said like the first part of "Shower"). Shour-Me ?

    • They're correct about the pronunciation.

      • Isn't there a subtle hint of a j/z sound at the beginning?

        • Nope.

        • @Clear: mayhaps that's a dialect difference north vs south china? Swear I've heard that sound in there.

        • @rhino015: Definitely would be the case. Show-me or Shour-me is how I've heard it used by Xiaomi themselves and others.

    • +3

      I pronounce it as Broke'me

        Lol.
I just spent AU$82 on Xiaomi gear from GB so I hear ya.

    • Thank you for posting this, I will be looking at setting up Home Assistant on a Raspberry pi over the next few days

      • +2

I did this for the first time a couple of days ago.
Although you can run HA on Windows or Synology OS or a Docker VM etc, RPi3 is the most supported way.

The https://home-assistant.io/getting-started/ website is a bit light on explanation sometimes.. like they will list some optional settings but not explain why/when you should use them.

The biggest difference over the Vera hardware hub I am used to, is that although there is a GUI, most settings are done by copy/pasting YAML code into a config file.

Installing the Samba Share addon makes editing the config file over the network from your computer (I use NotePad++) really easy.

So far I have added to HomeAssistant:
        - Vera controller (can see most devices set up on the Vera)
        - LIFX lights
        - Kodi media player
        - Hikvision NVR (for camera line crossing detection)

        • Is there any guide for Hikvision NVR?

I will try and compare the windows and pi3 setup's.

Honestly I am just really happy to finally justify buying a raspberry pi 3.

Now I just need a use for the Pi Zero…

I bought them both on a buy now, justify later plan.

    • I have a disability, so I've been having some fun with these doohickeys. I just need to get a decent price on the ol pi3 so I can really tinker. I really love the window and door sensors, so I'm hanging out for a ripper deal on them, because even just the one I have on the back door gives me a kind of peace of mind what with my support workers tendency to leave the door open "just for a minute" and letting all the flies in. Well now if it is over a minute it plays a nice little tune and we can all laugh. Let's just hope they don't get skeert by the unblinking eye (It is funny because I don't even have cameras up, but these devices spook people right out.)

      • I bought 2 today. Element14 are doing the rpi3 for $46+GST, with free post or courier delivery.

      • Here you go Codify, Rasberry Pi 3B from Gearbest $43.90 with free delivery
        https://www.gearbest.com/raspberry-pi/pp_488334.html
