holy crap…. cheapest around by a long way- good find :).

great for the price, especially Ethernet & WiFi - but doesnt print on CD's :(.

  • +1

that is well cheap, just the inks are almost that price retail.

not far off it! HT quotes $22 for each cartridge, and there's 5 of them in there!
$110 for new cartridges, or $157 for new printer WITH cartridges.

they shouldnt be allowed to do that, unnecessary landfill. I have an MP830 Canon multifunction (older model to the one above), and I'm in the same boat…. $120 for new cartridges, or bin a perfectly good printer and buy the one above for $150 and get Wifi?

      • +4

Not sure about this particular printer , but quite often these lower priced printers only come with "taster" cartridges . They are not full cartridges . It's a huge scam .

    awesome! ordered cheers!

Amazing price! A few months ago I was going to buy it from MSY but they didn't have it in stock, so I instead bought a MP640 from them which uses the same inks as the MX870 and has similar features (no fax, but can print on CDs.)

At the time, I did some research on Whirlpool and these Print Rite inks were recommended as being on par, if not slightly higher quality than the Canon inks:

Flat shipping rate for all items is $10 for the lot at QuickToner, so I ordered 6 cartridges (1 of each type + an extra black pigment cartridge) all for $41.80 delivered. A HUGE saving compared to the equivalent Canon pack at Officeworks @ $124 http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Ink-and-Toner/…

That's a bargain … I picked up two of these last week at HT for $175 and that was still the best price in the country. I'd recommend investing in a CISS (I used the Rihac one, www.rihac.com.au, and it's works a treat). I've printed out heaps of stuff (on my old MP630) and only just starting to get close to the bottom of the ink reservoir. It's easy to see how this system could and I quote "save up to 95% over the cost of using cartridges". The 100ml ink refill sets are around $60 but if you work out the cartridges you it's eqivalent to 60 CLI-521 & PGI-520 OEM cartridges containing 8mls of usable ink which would cost you over $1400.00. Anyway worth a look, big initial investment (around $120-150 for the CISS) but it has saved me a lot of time changing chips on the individual generic cartridge replacements. From the MP630 to the MX870 it looks like Canon only swapped two of the colour cartridges around so if I change to the new cartridge order and replace the cartridge chips with the ones from the MX870 then I should still be able to continue using my existing CISS.

thanks for that link! looks pretty great and i think i will invest..

They're also considerably cheaper on ebay…I think the one for my old MP830 was around $55 shipped! Seems to work ok, but rarely used coz I'm a laser fanboi now! ;)

        • +1

True, just make sure you know what you are getting. Not all inks are made equal. The ink from rihac is top grade. Probably safer bet for people who don't know what they're getting or if you don't trust the eBay seller.

Or you mean rihac on eBay?

        • +1

Agreed, ink is the key ingredient! Lol, I can remember using stamp pad ink back in the 90's when I first started refilling my own…actually got great results!

FWIW, the ebay seller I bought off was a 'power seller' & had over 99.5% positives! ;)

[edit] Here we go http://stores.ebay.com.au/Value-Store - it's up to 99.7% positive now! :)

        • +1

Hmm, I think I must have bought some of that stamp pad ink the other day from eBay :). Came complete with cartridges but they only lasted a fraction compared to good ink. Yes they were very cheap—get what u pay for!

Edit: I don't mean from seller above u linked to.

        • Yep, got your drift! True, dodgy dye-based inks are pretty awful…I'm not 100% sure but my conspiracy theory is that unscrupulous sellers are quite literally watering it down…it may start out as good ink, but being water based it's just so easy for them to thin it out!

i have rihac. terrible longevity, but good colour. if thats the best, then i wont buy ciss again for proper printing.

the print i have hanging has faded badly in less than 1yr. its on premium epson paper. the oem ink prints look like day1.

        • +1

I've been using Rihac inks in my MP600R for over two years now without any problems. That uses the very similar CLI-8 cartridges.

I just use their ink bottles to refill my Canon carts, and I use a chip "Redsetter" to reset the chips on the carts so the printer doesn't have a spaz (by design) about me refilling and helping the environment.

In fact I think the only reason they changed carts from CLI-8 to the CLI-5 was so that they could thwart peoples attempts at refilling/resetting. The 5's are black plastic, so you cant see how much ink is going in when refilling. And they changed the embedded chips, but I believe the "Redsetter" has been updated now for CLI-5 too. All the specs are identical for CLI-8 and CLI-5.

I bet in 100 years time people will look back on the current inkjet market with total disbelief at how wasteful we were in letting manufacturers get away with their cartridge antics.

Reckon we can pricematch at OW?

  • +3

answered my own question - yep they pricematched it with 5% off! It was funny - the manager was like "why do they do this…they're our sibling company!!!"

  • +2

Keep in mind this is a discontinued model replaced by the Canon MG Series. The new models are around the same price.

Does anyone know the quality of photo printing in this machine? Is it better than Pixma mp640?

Is this come with CD Tray for printing a label on CD?

    • +1

no cd's (not available in pack or as optional accessory)…. otherwise I would have got one for sure :(.

  • +1

    Sold out at North Ryde.

    • Does that mean we can't price match at OW in Sydney?

      • +1

        I guess it really depends if they call HT or not;

I took a print out along from early this morning which showed the unit in stock and got lucky (they did not bother to call HT to validate). It may have helped that I went at lunch time, and the store was busy, and I was dressed in somewhat respectable business attire.

You could also try a pricematch at harvey norman.

    hey guys

they were all sold out in QLD and delivery was a bit expensive for me so i cancelled my order…walked into OW and they price matched no question.

    got it for $149.15

  • +1

I got one from OW too. They just checked HT's prices. Didn't even check stock…

  • not that interesting. epson's 835 with a 3.5" colour screen 6ink print was $150 on epson.com.au box damaged section. rrp 350

i was going to post it however it sold out before i had the chance =( (10 available)

  • Thanks OP! Picked it up from OW today with price match for ~$149. Happy days :)

  • Hi Guys,

Can anyone please scan their Officeworks receipt and upload it for the rest of us ozbargainers, I tried my local OW but they were insistent that HT had no stock :-(. Unfortunately the HT promotion is over :-(.

    Cheers,

    • If the promotion is over there is nothing for Officeworks to price match against. A copy of a receipt won't help. Unless you find another retailer that is cheaper than Officeworks.

  • Other retailers price match receipts, I have confirmed with OW that they will not price match the receipt but other retailers will.

    • Yeah, OW will only price match if item is in stock.
