Apple iPhone X 256GB Silver / Space Grey $1703.99 Aus Stock + 12 Mth Apple WTY @ Techrific (Price Match Officeworks for 5% off)

1183

Cheapest deal found on staticice.

Apple iPhone X 256GB Silver - $1649 $1674 + $29.99 postage
Apple iPhone X 256GB Space Grey - $1664 $1674 + $29.99 postage

I price matched at Office Works and got further 5% off for the Space Grey. They take into account the postage cost of $29.99 from Techrific which ends up being $1609.25 after the 5% off. Good for those travelling overseas (which I am!) to get a further 10% off on Tax Refund. Total for me will come to $1462.95 after TRS. Pretty good deal for the X IMO.

      • How can they know if u bring it back to australia?

        • Depending on your purchase amount, they may make a note to check on you when you return. I think you need to be doing something like $100k for them to check. Few thousand is pretty much guaranteed no probs.

        • some how I am just worried they might have some kind of special machine to track. I haven't claimed TRS before so very nervous.

    Great first post. Thanks

    • Thanks!

  • +9

you'd be bonkers to spend this much on phone.

    • +5

depends how much money / dispoaible income you have, people buy $600 bottles of wine, for some people this is a days wage after tax, for others it would be 2 months grocery bill … all relative.

    • +4

Depends on what you value/want to spend your money on. People buying luxury cars that cost $100k+ to me is crazy.

I will be getting one in February (plan will be up) and am looking for to it. I consider its features awesome. And I don't want Android (which a similar Android S8+ is only $50 less) because I ran an iPad and MacBook so the Apple ecosystem is awesome.

      • -2

"I ran an iPad and MacBook so the Apple ecosystem is awesome" think what you mean to say is you're locked in and have no choice now…

        • +4

Not at all. Your implying that because I have spent so much on their gear that I can't leave it without suffering loses. False.

First: If I wanted to sell my iPad, iPhone and Mac I could pretty easily since they hold they value better than most.

Second: I choose to buy them. I am an Senior Infrastructure Engineer did my research. I have used almost every product and OS out there. I find they are great and just work… no dicking around etc.

        you think a s8+ is $1600-$1800? what?

  • +3

This is the price of 2 nice laptops

    • +2

You mean 2 below average laptops?

      • dell outlet latitude as new

        • Still below average. Latitude's were the business range, they are now the prosumer range. The only high-end Dell range is the XPS.

        • @daven1985:

Imagining for a second that what you say is true and the thousands of businesses running latitude 7000 series laptops are in the wrong and have accidentally purchased prosumer gear, how does "not high-end" automatically equate to "below average"?

        • +1

          @Save Medicare:

Didn't say they are wrong. The gear works, but it is not their top of the line gear. Thousands of businesses (like myself) purchase them for two reasons. 1st the price and 2nd the support built around it. The latitude is built to be easily repairable so that when things go wrong on them a tech can be out within a day repairing it.

My comment was that the Dell range that mirrors built quality/design/features to Apple is their XPS range.

      • Two above average laptops in the US.

  • +22

Man this phone is expensive. It's just a phone people. Complete waste of money.

    • +1

Some people still think it is not a rip-off. They let such brands run their show.

I stopped buying Apple and Samsung phones long back. Both front runners in this game.

      • -4

What you have against Samsung? They make nice phones.
Wish they'd drop the wanky edge display, though. I wish every manufacturer just used a completely flat piece of glass, so getting a well-fitting screen protecting wasn't such a pain in the ass.

        • -1

Samsung make great phones, a little pricey but thats fine. What is annoying with Samsung is the bloatware and lack of updates. Although they are getting better.

        • @wooldogs:

a little pricey but thats fine.

That, precisely, isn't fine. Since Apple increases the price of their flagship phone, Samsung follows the same.

        • @wooldogs: Loving my Essential phone. Got an update for the latest Intel issues just yesterday - fast.

        • See my comment above. I never said they don't make nice phones. Many brands in the world make nice phones.

        • I chose HTC over Samsung simply because the s8 has the edge screen (annoying) and because the phone is more narrow, makes it harder to text with two hands.

        • don’t buy a flagship phone …. buy next model down or wait a year …. same with carbon fibre bikes on current models vs 1 year old bikes …..

at work people are getting these phones because work pays for them, they don’t buy them out of their own pay packet.

        • @garage sale:

          True that.

at work people are getting these phones because work pays for them, they don’t buy them out of their own pay packet.

Does work pay for top of the range phone 100%? That's nice 'work' then if they pay well above $1000 for the phones.

        • @wooldogs: Buying a Samsung phone is like buying a laptop where Windows is supplied by the laptop maker instead of Microsoft and you need to depend on the laptop maker for updates — nobody would accept that!

        • @virhlpool: Except that iPhones pretty much stay the same price till the new ones come out but Samsung phones like the Note 8 was ~$1400 when it came out 3-4 months ago and it's now ~$900.

        • @virhlpool:
Honestly, I feel they need to increase the price to uphold reputation. If Apple's to phone cost a lot more than your brand's, then it instantly seems superior to many people.

    • -1

Samsung S8+ is like $50 less… that price isn't insane for devices.

And also it isn't just a phone. The camera in it is insane!!! My brother recently showed me the photo's he was taking of his kids and they were outstanding… one he got blown up to A3 size for a frame and it still looks amazing!

      • +1

The camera is below the original pixel phone on quality from what I remember reading. Currently 4th I believe, after both Samsung and Google's top phones

  • +9

For a phone this price I would want a 3 year warranty.

    • +1

      May be more.

      • If I made phones, I'd be keen to avoid warranting any computer the consumer will abuse, (drop, take to the toilet, keep in their smelly pockets, etc.) for any longer than I had to, by law.

Besides… which manufacturer does better than the statutory 12 months under ACL?

    • buy it from telstra and use their “ new phone feel” deal, they give you a new phone every year …. it all comes with a price.

      • +2

@garage sale: Is that advice? Given on OzB?

        1. market price is consistently 10-30% cheaper than Helstra
        2. Buying at a discount avoids:
          • lock-in (additional costs when market prices falls)
          • Pumped up service costs
          • Pumped up finance costs
          • Impossible service and stupidity (who knows what cost)
          • Mistakes from publication of customer data on the internet (spreadsheets, network compromises, stupidity etc.)
          • etc.

Ok so no-one else finances phones as actively as the 'new phone feel program', but it sure isn't value. Even if you love land-filling phones it is hardly cheap when you consider the associated costs

PS. OK, so yes you did say 'at a price', but you also started with 'buy it from telstra'. That got me going, straight off the bat. My apologies!

    • Unless it has damage Apple will honour 3 years with it generally. Since ACL says a device must be covered for a reasonable period of time based on its value then a $1500+ phone will get at least 2 years if not more.

  • +7

Mid range phones getting better and better without getting more expensive, yet high end phones are getting more and more expensive.

    • Much more profit to be made from high end.
Honestly the only noticable difference for me between the top and miss range phones are the camera.

  • +5

Lol at pricing! I feel sad about this.

      • +1

        Lmao!

        • So that's $229 then oh might need some airpods for another $229 too since they have ditched the microphone jack. Also need a screen protector and case guys, so maybe add another $50.

          https://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MMEF2ZA/A/airpods

At this point you are not insured so if some ass steals your phone you are going to have a bad time. How much would it cost to insure this? Maybe $12 per month.

Now at this point you can use the damn thing and have some reassurance to actually take it outside and use it.

        • +2

@wooldogs: i can buy lg 55 oled with price of this phone.

        • yes a 55 oled tv costs the same but you need to wait till you friends come to your home to bore them with your photos , with this you can bore them with your photos where ever you are “ here is a picture of us meditating at the jehovas witness retreat in Ubud after our detox smoothie for lunch”

my house insurance cover items less than $1500 if i loose them for $20 if item has been itemised on the policy.

      • If you do 1 screen in that time, its not a bad price. My last 6+ i did 2 screens (just the glass, not the lcd) and one bendy incident. Had to pay for the screens at about $200 a throw.

In all the years leading up to this phone i've never cracked a screen, but what can i say.. kids… AR mobile games… none of that was around for me when i had a Nokia 7650 :p

  • +3

I bought one full RRP but its going back, as nice as it is, its just too small for my liking. I thought it'd replace the plus with the larger screen/less bezel but its thinner too, so everything looks smaller and less screen real-estate. The UI is still in its infancy and they arent making full use of whats there, lots of wasted space especially with on-screen keyboard. I suspect a new "plus" model will come out soon with more screen real-estate, then i might give it another go. Till then I'll make-do with the 7+.

Face-ID is great, better then Samsung's for sure but it still feels very first-gen slow (like touch ID from Iphone 5/5s/6). Overall nice phone, good first attempt with OLED but I can't give up that screen real-estate and dont feel like being a beta-tester, not for $1829.

For that money, it better be better than perfect :)

I run android too so no bias here :)

    • +4

I think the combination of Face ID and Touch ID would be great. Touch ID for unlocking the phone while pulling it out of your pocket or other situations, Face ID for while you're using the phone, e.g. seamlessly authorising in-app/payments.

      • Agree! I would have loved a Touch ID at the back… however Apple are a company known for giving you the next big thing not want everyone else was doing. If they had put a Touch ID on the back everyone would just scream they copied the Pixel. And if they are not used the notch everyone would claim they were just copying Samsung's design.

    • Did you miss having the home button on the X? I still prefer touch unlock to iris/face unlock.

I had Galaxy S8+ which had that stupid location for fingerprint sensor which meant to unlock when the phone is on a desk means lifting the phone or having to position your face for the phone to unlock. I’m running a iphone 7+ now which is still best for useability. I’m hoping that future X’s will have a built in screen fingerprint scanner.

      • I got used to it with the gesture base actions. I use the note and I like the inclusion of the finger sensor for backup if the front one fails. It's not that awkward for myself to access but can be for others.

    • I too went from the 7+ to the X and initially found the X screen to be too small (I set the 7+ display to zoomed) and Face ID too slow/inconvenient (you need to angle the phone towards your face to unlock which can be awkward in situations like when the payment machine is not facing you).

I thought of returning the X (another advantage of buying from Apple — you can basically just return it within 2 weeks with no hassles) but after couple of weeks of using the X I'm finding the new UI gestures for replacing the home button to be super convenient e.g. simply swiping to switch apps instead of double-clicking the home button.

I run android too :) Speaking of which, I was surprised/disappointed to find the built-in system backups do not backup SMS/text messages when I recently did a backup/restore. And this was on a Nexus device. iPhone users take complete backup/restores for granted.

    • Thanks for that insight BargainKen.
I have been umming and ahhing since the release of the X whether to buy or not to buy and still not 100% sure.
I'm waiting on a good deal to sway me.

I'm holding on to my 6+ (on my second refurbished replacement under warranty) and getting very annoyed with Apple lately but I'm pretty much stuck in their ecosystem with a watch (it doesn't do anything without an iPhone!), ipad, macbook, mac mini, apple tv.
I have looked at Android alternatives and they are nice (especially the Galaxy camera) but I'm very hesitant to switch.

I keep saying I'll wait til the next iPhone release but I've gone through 7, 8 and X without biting. The watch is probably the main thing holding me on at the moment and I'm considering selling?

If anyone wants this iPhone, please compare to a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2: See the comparison https://goo.gl/KDAWpA

Much cheaper and a great alternative.

    • I am wondering if I should get a Mi Mix 2 or a OnePlus 5t. Tough choice. Just wish the cameras were better on the Chinese phones as they don't even come close to the iPhone X in that respect.

      • Has a lot to do with the software too. Consider Google Camera. Does amazing things for Redmi Note 4x that I have. Here is a good video Is The Google Camera App REALLY that good? (version 3.02.45) tested on Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRRGJT0KUL0

can’t see xiaomi giving 5 years of android updates …. you will get 5 years of ios updates.

also xiaomi has no australian presence so warranty is a hassle, apple has apple shops and also dealer repairs centres.

you can’t compare xiaomi with apple if you are in australia

      • Plenty in the Android community with custom ROMs.
Phones don't break, mostly people break phones.
Who has a phone for 5 years anyway.

        • most people just buy a phone and use, and take to dealer if there are issues , custome rom users are probabaly less than 0.01% of phone owners.

phone for 5 years ….. some people keep using a phone until it dies, they don’t just upgrade for a faster processor …… i’ve had a phone for 4 years until the battery got unseeable …. see people with broken iphone 5 screens on the train still using them….

what will be interesting is the meltdown flaw … it affected arm chips so let’s see the android manufacturers bring out patches for older phones…. probabaly not …… apple already released ios update ……….

        • @garage sale:

Android will fix this at the Security Patch Level. Xiaomi.eu China dev ROMs, they update every week and the security updates also come in often.

Cortex A55 and A53 not effected because do not use out of order execution.

"On the Android platform, exploitation has been shown to be difficult and limited on the majority of Android devices," Google said.

The company pushed out a patch to manufacturers of Android phones in December 2017

The reason why iPhone users on trains have broken screens is because they cannot afford a new iPhone or screen replacement and/or lazy to get it fixed.

        • Phones don't break, mostly people break phones.
Who has a phone for 5 years anyway.

My OnePlus One is coming up to 4yrs old in May and it's been great https://vgy.me/oThreZ.png

If you buy a decent phone they will last (I got OPO as it had 3GB ram and most other high end phone of the time only had 2GB ram). I am looking to buy an android phone with either 6GB or 8GB RAM now so I can keep it another 4yrs as modern apps just get more and more bloated with useless features it is good to have the extra RAM even if you don't need it now.

    • Too big screen.

Glad to see you’re treating other users with respect for purchasing whatever they want, disgusting.

      • +1

Glad you see it that way. I guess you don’t care about wanting them to have value for money. Disgusting.

        • I might as well say to you not to buy anything as you’re spending money, that’s essentially what you’re saying.

You’re the one swearing at someone for buying a phone.

        • +2

          @doweyy:
I was suggesting that the value for money is not great. We are on a bargain website after all. Sorry for looking out for people.

          @joeyy17:

Why not just say “This is not good value for money, I spent $1200 on a 7 Plus and this is overpriced for what it provides.” rather than swear at someone if that’s what your point is.

Sure, I love getting people bargains and value for money if you have ever noticed my posts, but I don’t enjoy seeing comments like yours making someone feel bad about buying something they want.

Of course this is an expensive phone and I agree that’s its not good value for money.

        • +6

          @joeyy17:

This is Ozbargain which means if a product is cheaper at one place compared to others then it’s a good deal. Regardless of price.

You can go setup Ozvalueformoney website if you want to preach value for money.

        • +5

I think at the end of the day one's perception of value to another is different. Something may be expensive to one but not another and we should not be judgemental on how people spend. We can all have our opinions, but we can be nice about it.

        • @nizsmo: That's true. The same goes for cars, watches, perfumes, hotels, air tickets and all other luxuries.

I guess 'perception of value for money' changes with wealth one has (for the current needs/ requirements) and also lessons one has learnt in the past (e.g. losses made, etc). Some things I used to consider cheap some years ago when I lived in a different city are now expensive because I live in Sydney and I know how much MORE I need to save to buy a shelter here. At the same time, if someone already has one shelter and is happy with that, he can spend much more on goods he/she desires. Whilst income may remain the same, situations may make one poor or rich when it comes to his/her spending power on such things. If I didn't have any pressure to save up, I would probably see brands from different lenses and not the lens of 'value for money'.

  • What’s the best price for an iPhone 8?

  • +12

So many haters just because the phone is expensive. If people have the money and want it who cares? This is a great bargain and the poster has done well. Don't waste the comment section tearing others down just because you can't or don't want to fork up the money for it. Different strokes for different folks.

    • Gotta do what you can to fight Apple on this.

      • Sorry can't tell if this one is sarcasim

        • Kinda? I personally don't care. For me, if Apple can get away with it then they should. They are exploiting people, but I only judge the people who but the phone, not Apple themselves.

However, since Apple lead the premium phone line, them upping the price of their top phone will drive up the price of premium Android phones. For those who don't want Samsung and such following this trend, and still want the best phone; the best they can do is try to persuade others not to buy Apples iPhone X, hoping that the sales will ultimately be poor enough for Apple to reconsider the profit margin it's trying to make.

        • @Salmando: Why even judge the people? If you've got the money there are plenty of reasons to buy the iPhone X. It could be you want the power of the A11 chip which far outstrips every other SOC in the market. It could be because they require the locked down security environment of IOS. It could be they like the user environment of IOS over android but still want an OLED screen or maybe they want the user support of 3-5 years worth of updates. There are lots of reasons to buy different phones but the only fool in this thread is you if you think a few comments in an Ozbargain thread will bring down their pricing strategy of a business that is sitting on some of the largest cash reserves in the world. Samsung will likely follow their lead for pricing while doing their own thing like with the headphone jack. It's very hard to change Samsung's mind just like Apple, all you need to see that is their stubbornness on the bixby button.

        • @UponOccasion:
Am I not allowed to judge people?
As great as this phone may be, it doesn't justify the price.
The people who own this phone shouldn't care what I think about them, so no harm me thinking less of them.

        • @Salmando: You can judge if you really wish it but it will do you no favours and such petty judgement will only open you yourself up to judgement for your condescension. As I said there are many reasons why one might buy this phone regardless of the price and if they can afford it even those with the money too may appreciate the discount. Why discourage users from submitting what is a legitimate deal simply because you don't like the pricing strategy of the brand? Any point you may have is lost in negativity.

  • -1

    Almost $1000 more than 1+5T 😢.

    • -1

Almost $1680 more than one if the phones we sell at work.

See what I did there to you doing what you did do back there?

Keep in mind, the CEO interpretation of accurate is up for debate. Chinese labour costs aren't that much either. Doesn't take many man-hours to assemble and test.

    • These figures are always interesting, but its far from the only cost of the actual phone, despite the relatively expensive price of the phone. Tear-downs are a good indicator of what the parts cost, but the actual cost of the phone != the cost of the parts and assembly.

      • +2

like comparing the cost of the ingredients in meal to the cost of the actual meal at a restaurant , or the cost of grapes to make a $500 bottle of wine …. it’s how many they can make and the market is willing to buy ….

        • Yeah, I'm not about to pay $15 for a bowl of salad when I can go to woolies and throw together the same thing for $5 and 2x the portion.

Or cook chicken schnitz with 2x as much cheese , including the gas and electricity used for waaaay less than the $25~ they're asking me.

  • Still can't afford it, I'm a Pixel guy now.

    • And Pixels are cheap? :) That's like saying I can't afford to drive a Mercedes Benz so I drive a BMW :))

      • Not cheap RRP but for 59$/m upgraded from new contract of 49/m plus gift cards it is affordable ;)

  • Hmmm, I would like clarification on whether or not these are grey market or Apple AU supplied. You will only get the Apple warranty and not the second twelve months if that is grey market. “aus stock” could be interpreted all sorts of ways.
Here is a cheap iPhone 8 that techrific has https://www.techrific.com.au/mobile-phones/apple/brand-new-a… with the claim it has “Apple warranty”. Well, of course. But as a grey market it won’t have Australian warranty.

    • I will post the reply from Techrific regarding this matter when they reply. Otherwise I would suggest price matching with Office Works as you will have the "24 months" warranty.

  • +4

    $1600+ iPhone on ozbargain. LOL.

  • And if you can get David Jones to pricematch you can score extra 10% OFF through Entertainment Book

    • Or better yet if you can get Harvey Norman to price match, AND you had 4 AMEX cards and bought $1600 worth of HN vouchers for $1200, plus TRS you would be pushing the price down to pretty close to the $1k mark which is absolutely awesome if you can be in that situation (chances are not big, but many people did buy HN vouchers with AMEX cards at the end of last year).

    • It would be nice but DJ and Myer are both tough to price match. They will always use the excuse of "below cost price". Their "cost price" has to factor in labor and operation costs so it would be hard to get them down. Apple products are probably the hardest…
