  • Is this any good? for price/quality?

    • +3

Had one for years, never misses a beat.

    • +2

WD is the go to brand for HDD's usually, so can't go too wrong, as long as you safely remove so the disk's don't damage.

      • +1

And don't drop them, which is why I only use solid state for portable purposes now. Still, great price.

  • +1

anyone know if other stores will price match?

  • +6

That's it, I'm moving to Belconnen.
Lol shame it's in the ACT :/

  • Not again…

    • Not what again?

      • +1

Trying to get Officeworks staff to honour their own clearence deal from another store…

        • Ahh. Yeah, last time I tried they split the difference, but didn't match.

  • +4

WD are meant to be good, had one for about 7 years now…but i think safest place to save precious moment would be cloud…have 15 gig of videos and images of my son…still going .saving them for his 18th …which is 15 years away :-)

    • +10

Heard Hamish & Andy talking about this once. They were saying that kids these days will grow up and see all the photos and videos from when they were young and think… “did my parents have a life?” :D

      • +4

True, but they will probably asks for those videos when they they have kids

      • +4

I will be telling them the truth. I plan on using it as an excuse for good contraception use. Once they pop out thats the end of life as you know it. Your life is no longer your own and its going to be a long 18 plus years till you get it back.

    • +1

Safest place is to have multiple backups, one being offsite.

    • +4

The safest place would be to keep them in many different places at once. You never know if a natural disaster will knock out a server, or if the company won't lose or corrupt the data somehow. So hedge your bets, have some on HDD, DVDs or Blu Rays, and the Cloud. Preferably as many places as possible before it gets too expensive or tedious to maintain.

      • +4

you forget to pay for your cloud storage and it gets deleted ….. or your password gets lost and you can't prove your indentity …. cloud is good, but also need a backup at home.

        • That's why you use one of the big services in the cloud that won't shutdown. Want something basic? Google Drive or Dropbox. Want something secure and encrypted? A service like SolarWinds.

    • If you don't want to go cloud. Then you should ideally have your backup hard drive be 2 mirrored drives in RAID. Hard drives do fail (3 out of the 15 or so hard drives i have owned over the last 10 years have failed) and because they aren't likely to fail at the same time. You are able to swap out the failed drive with a new one of either of the 2 drives fail.

      • not a tech-savvy here :-( ….you must be IT guy…

  • +1

This is down the road….. Unfortunately I don't need one….. Yet I'm still tempted to buy one! I think that makes me an ozbargainer!

    • +4

It only does if you go buy it.

    • +9

      Buy now, think later.
      That's how you do it.
      Like a professional.

    • Me too! (But I missed it)

    • You could've sold it here for a small fee more and everyone would've been happy (ie me) lol :P

  • Wow, good price for this, I have 2 units bought 7yrs and 4yrs ago

Both units still kicking till today

    • They both died same day???

      • Both still working well

  • Good price for solid hdd

  • +1

Will other Officeworks price match this?

    • +4

I suggest pratcing first by talking to a donkey…then you will be prepared for the experience.

    • It’s a clearance item so not likely. Can’t see it on web site, only 2 tb so you’ll be unlikely to find it.

  • -2

No 1Tb at my local, but got offered a 2Tb Elements for $97

    "We don't adjust OUR prices"…

"No worries mate, you go eat your twisties with a fork"… Clunk! Dial tone….

    • People still take calls on landlines?

      • Didn't have the donkeys mobile number…

  • They change the insides with whatever cheapest component they decide at the time . Having said that I've had a better run with wd than other portable hard drives. Thanks op….ace price

  • ok …. so do they match at other stores, or ACT is making shelf space so just this store ?

  • officeworks runs a 30 minute delay on 1300 phone calls.

$44 is all store price. Little stock around. Good Hunting all - and since they operate zero customer care these days screw em.

  • im lazy to drive out that way ~_~" howmuch are they normally? usually always $68

  • -1

I work at Officeworks. Funny hearing the squabbles on this thread. Most untrue or misguided. Seems like a good buy for Officeworks Belconnen customers.

    • +2

Yeah my store sold out when they were 69 or 68. There wouldn't be many around I imagine.

      • +3

Yeah it was a promotional item for a catalogue. We are out of stock. I would assume any stores with stock would have received the price change.

Ppl remember, (though I like WD 3.5") WD 2.5" have their usb controller fixed to the drive. Makes it difficult to recover data if it fails.

        • I know purchase and use Seagate drives this reason, which apparently still have separate USB controllers. Mind you, my original four WD 2.5" portable drives are all still going strong - a couple of them are five years old now.

        • i know it may be too late but if it's not to much trouble any chance on getting an update on deewhy? i doubt there will be any left but worth a try, thanks :)

    • +4

when u said about the "untrue or misguided", whats the "true" about the "price match" and "all store price"?
who cares about damn "squabbles", ppl just want to know whether they could get it for $44 from other Officeworks store or not,
and u missing all those in ur comments.

      • If other stores have stock it would be the same price.

        • +5

With respect, that comment is misguided… and proven untrue already… It depends on the staff you get…

Take the Wd Cloud deal from the other day…

        • +4

say that to OW Taren Point staff. I went there last week for the $80 3TB HDD and I found the last one on the shelf, clearance price on the sticker was showing $199 down from 249, the OW guy scanned it and the actual price was $149, far away from the $80 price posted here! I suggest you stop misguiding people and stop spreading untrue information

        • +1

@GregFiona: if memory serves me right, reading that receipt provided. Whatever officeworks that was chopped a few extra dollars off for whatever reason.

        • +2

          @obit11: you don’t call $69 a few extra dollars :)

        • +1

@GregFiona: Goremans is correct in what they say. No idea why that store did what they did. The price was overrode as the receipt states, not the "normal" clearance price. Not Taren Point staffs fault.

        • -3

@obit11: come on! Don’t tell me it’s the first time you hear that different OW stores can have different clearance prices! Can you pm your contact number next time I’m in store and it happens to me?
Not only it has happened to me but OW Taren Point has refused to match the price.
It looks like lots of OW staff, not only you, have no idea why other stores are doing what they are doing

        • @GregFiona: so it scanned at the lower price? And so the product was purchased at the lower price. Makes sense

        • @Goremans: Nope!

        • -4

@GregFiona: I see what they are getting at, the store went rouge with the $80 price, official clearence price was $150… Your store didn't get the memo man, neither did mine. It's just a shame is all. Happens all the time all over the world in many situations, the true tragedy is when it happens in the medical industry because people can actually suffer.

Also a shame Officeworks don't really price match with their own stores, but why should they when some go rouge… They are a business at the end of the day.

Sidenote, it was 2Tb for $80 not 3Tb, just saying. ;-)

From memory, I suggested to contact head office to state your case and 'sort out' your local Officeworks… multiple times.
After all, only a donkey can speak donkey language. ;-)

        • @Davious: At least you got something right, it was indeed 2TB and not 3TB!

        • @GregFiona: Ya man, only cause head office helped… after seeing others getting it or $80 it was hard not to feel like I was 'missing out' buying it at their store price, esp. with receipt proof.

        • +1

nope!! went to fairfield store this afternoon $79.
they don't have it on "clearence" and refused to do a price match,
i use to love Officeworks' return policy and price match,
now they just getting sux, started to ask questions to make u feel humiliated, they will still accept ur returns but just make u feel shi()t.
and now this dodgy "clearence" tag…
whats wrong with u now Officeworks… the next dicksmith?

  • Will other officeworks price match this?

        • @chunman: I rang Marion before you answered this, they told me no stock and they sold out a few weeks ago. Guess I'll never know who was right. Darn if they did have some, they are usually pretty good checking there though.

      • +1

Any chance you could check the stock at the other ACT stores? Thank you!

      • Have Tuggerah still got stock anyone? And will they match the price? Might swing by tomorrow and get one if so :)

Bought 3 from Mt Gravatt Officeworks. Ask someone as they're behind the counter. Still plenty left in stock.

Thanks OP! I can finally set up something with my Raspberry Pi with this

  • I just bought 2….its not out of stock!

  • +2

Thank you to the OP and the Mt Gravatt commentators. I went there this morning and was told there were none in stock. Saw Clintyip's post and popped back up to ask the greeter at the door. I started asking him about the drives, he said "Are you from OzBargain?", I said yes and he reached over the counter to open the cabinet door. All good and there were still some there after I took four.

    • -1

      that's greedy

      • Picked two up for family members at the Sunshine Coast…

        • I'm also on the sunny coast, I'm also your family…. Thanks!

  • Thanks for they post. I just picked the last one up at Southport. You do have to ask at the register if they have them, as they are not on the shelves.
