  • Can a graphics card be added?

    • +5

Yes, but it needs to be low profile. 1050 seems to be the common one used.

      • Will putting a GeForce GTX 1060 Mini ITX OC work??

        • No

        • @joungs: Why not? So 1050ti is the most powerful card it can take?

        • +2

@HarveySpecter: Needs to be a half height card with no external power connector. Best you can get is a low profile 1050ti

        • @joungs: oh ok thanks

    • +1

I have a 1030 in mine. My investigation previously appeared to indicate a 1050ti worked in others, but it pushes the limits on what power the PCIE slot is rated at providing.

      • Interesting. I am looking at getting a card in the current sale for mine (9010 SFF).

Anyone have an idea of the sort of difference there would be in performance between say the 1030, 1050 2gb and 1050ti 4gb?

        • +1

looked at the 1050 vs 1050ti the other day over a bunch of games but can't remember where the article was.. the ti did squeeze a few extra FPS out of all the games though.. like 5-10 from memory.

          edit: found it, http://www.legitreviews.com/msi-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-4gb-gefo…

        • @ozmian: damn.. 5-10fps is quite a lot, and should be considered if wanting to increase the life of your setup.
Also note the Ram in it, the biggest bottleneck for games these days is limited Ram. case in point would be GTAV, eats so much ram, and could theoretically play just as close to the ti if it werent for it.

I experienced this when I upgraded my 1060 3gb to the 6gb model. Sure there was a decent improvement in the card itself, but the main thing stopping my 1060 3gb from going ham was ram.

        • The 1050ti is 20% more powerful than a 1050 and twice as powerful as a 1030. On average it'll consume 70w while gaming, which the motherboard can supply easily while still being under recommended spec.

Feel free to check out dedicated reviews to see how they perform in practise. The GT 1030 doesn't have amazing price/performance and while it can drive low, sometimes medium settings on most titles at decent framerates, the 1050/ti is a big step up. More geared towards medium/high settings at 60fps.

        • +1

I would recommend getting the 1050Ti to future proof as well. With a 1050Ti, the PC can be later used as a 4K HTPC while the 1030 and 1050s may struggle due to lack of VRAM. I have a 9010SFF with i5 3570, 12gb ram, msi gtx 1050ti, and it runs PUBG on low settings with the exception of AA and View distance on ultra.

        • @nairdajun: Just curious, you tried running PUBG on any higher settings post 1.0 release?

        • +1

@fratzhaus: Not yet, but it should be even better. This was pre 1.0, and i was getting between 30-45fps in mid-late game. SOmetimes less than 30 in the initial plane drop.

THe 9010 SFF was used when i went interstate on placement, when 1.0 was released i was already back home and back on my main machine with a GTX1060 6G so it hasnt really been used since.

Our play style in squads was we used to drop (it like its) hot in Rozhok, Prison, Pochinki, School, military base, etc. I cannot recall a time when fps failed me in these situations, so I was probably getting minimum 32fps in start of game.

        • @fratzhaus: yep agreed.. i'd go the 1050ti for gaming .. just set the kids up a HP 8200 sff off ebay and will go that route if gaming is desired down the track.

    • ive added the gt730 to my sff this one https://acatana.com.au/assets/images/medialibrary/content/ca…

see the vga cable? Ive disconnected it from the board then purchased an aftermarket bracket that had cutouts for the hdmi and dvi ports like these: https://www.ebay.com.au/p/ASUS-Low-Profile-Bracket-HDMI-DVI-…
      then swapped them out.

My use case was to drive another screen not to game. But provided it sticks within power limits (ive used a power meter and the system doesnt draw that much anyway even with the card) then it should work

  • Have you got any small form PCs ?

    • All 3 listed are small form factor (SFF). If you're talking about smaller than that, there are USFF (Ultra small form factor) versions around. I dont remember model numbers but if that's what you want you can just search for USFF on ebay.

    • The first version is desktop format. The 9020's are SFF

      • So it is, my bad :)

      • Just to confirm, if I was to purchase the HP, I would need to purchase a Low profile 1050ti yes?

  • What sort of Ram does the 4GB model take?

    • Ddr3 since the cpu is out at 2012, don’t think they have ddr4 ready on mid range desktop.

    • 3rd and 4th gen intel cpus take DDR3, havent seen 4th gen take ddr4 yet. I have the haswell (the last of the 4th gen) i5, its DDR3.

  • +1

Was a fantastic deal when it had the 8GB of RAM and HDD but this is even better in my opinion with the SSD. Have been using one for a while and works fantastic as a HTPC. I added this $15 Wireless AC adapterand a $1.30 Orico Bluetooth adapter which works great with it too.

    • Hi mate can it fit any 3.5" hard drives?

      • Yep, mine came with a 3.5" installed.

  • What power supplies are in the SFF (9020) versions?

    Are they:
    - reliable?
    - efficient?
    - easy to get?
    - dell only or do any others fit?

      255W up to 90% (certified 80+ gold)

Half height PCIe so it can only handle low profile cards with 2 ports.

But on ebay, the i7 desktop seems to use Windows 8 Home COA - Windows 10 Installed…
Unfortunatly, there is no extra discount if we pick up instore (Brisbane).

      • Nice if reliable. Best to by two perhaps :-)

        • Interesting, some professional sellers replace the old 255W PSU by another old PSU but with only 240W.

  • Kind of annoying was mid way through checking out the HP Compaq 8200 Elite when it went up in price $20…

    • 20% hike is common, sometimes they forget, then they do this to you :(

  • +1

can you bundle a GPU upgrade within the single ebay transaction and have it delivered alreday installed ??

  • Does refurbished mean no warranty with dell?

  • +2

$191 is cheap, but consider paying a bit more for 8GB ($50 for 4GB new), and SFF (not the chunky "desktop").

however this units come with a SSD which should make up the difference.

No, 4GB is likely to lead to a lot of swapping, and swap is bad for SSDs. You still want the 8GB, unless you really know otherwise.

  • If these machines are wiped or HDD replaced, is it possible to reinstall Windows 10 on them legitimately, or will it have to go back to the COA Windows Version on them?

    • If Windows 10 is already installed, you should be able to install it again if you don't change the motherboard. You just have to make sure you get the same version. Grab the product key and keep it somewhere, just in case. I keep mine in a spreadsheet online.

Note: You can't use one product key on another Windows 10 PC. The product key is matched up with a hash of your hardware.

  • How many 3.5in slots on the Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF?

    • For 9010 and 9020: only 1 so you can't add another internal SDD/HDD

      • from the listing it appears that the 9010 has a full size optical drive installed?
probably can remove that and gain space to put in a 3.5 hdd?

        • I've got a 9010 and it was fitted with a 320GB 2.5 inch internal HDD but it was in a cradle that fit two 2.5 inch drives, so I've added one SSD. The optical drive isn't a full 3.5 inch size, it's a bit slimmer so you can't easily fit a 3.5 inch drive there, I don't think.

EDIT: You could probably replace the 2x2.5" cradle with the 3.5" HDD and then replace the optical drive with a 2.5" SSD.

        • @larryhudson:

You could probably replace the 2x2.5" cradle with the 3.5" HDD and then replace the optical drive with a 2.5" SSD.

My 9010 SFF came with a 3.5" HDD, so have unplugged the optical drive and just have the SSD floating atm.

      • awwwww

    • Want to know this aswell. Looking to add 1SSD and 1HDD. So in total, 1SSD and 2HDD. Will it fit?

    • +1

Being an owner of an 9010SFF i can probably answer this question to what you want to know:

      The 3.5" drive with an adapter can take 2 x 2.5" (SSD+HDD)
The SFF's use a laptop style hard drive which you can remove the drive and add something like this

Bear in mind that the drive may not look OEM flush with the chassis, but it IS functional to get a maximum of 3 x 2.5" drives.

I suggest if you use this option, to put the SSD in that caddy. I tried putting a SSHD in that slot and i don't think it produced enough power.

Currently in my 9010sff I am running a 240gb Crucial BX100, with a 2TB firecuda 2.5" snagged by the amazon deal awhile back. For about 2-4 months i ran the crucial SSD in the caddy and didn't have any issues

      • Thanks for the info

But I just bought a 4tb HD from this deal here so getting another 2.5" HDD won't be cost effective for me :(

        • you can put the SSD in the caddy and use a 3.5" drive in the bay
Otherwise no, there is no capacity for SFF to take 2x 3.5" drives in any configuration

        • @nairdajun: ahh ok thanks for your help.

Atm my desktop has 1x480gb SSD, 1x4GB HDD and 1x2GB HDD. So I really want to re-use all those drives :p

        • @HarveySpecter: You could always put the 4TB into a enclosure?

  • What do you guys use these PC's for?

    • +8

Same use since the 90s. Porn.

    • HTPCs, some gaming… if you put a discrete gfx card in there. Without it, you could still play some light games. Or emulate.

    • I have an older core 2 duo model I bought for $90 a few years ago. I've added a ssd for OS, upgraded the HDD, added a pcie usb 3.0 card with front panel adapter. It stays on 24/7 and I remote in to download media and then transfer to USB or share via the gigabit ethernet. A similar NAS would have cost me a $300+ (plus drives) at the time without the same flexibility. The only downside is can only fit one 3.5 drive inside but with the usb card I can always plug in external drives.

    • A lampshade.

    • Add in some ram and a gpu and you can software develop and 3d model your future game in one of these.

    • Ethernet enabled heater with a LCD screen.

  • I've been out of PC's for so long, can someone please let me know which one is the best bang for buck??

Looking to get one for my folks

    Thanks.

    • $390 one looks really great.

$190 not so great unless you add more RAM.

other one is great but add an SSD.

    • Get the $190 one and find a used stick of RAM. It should be plenty for them.

    • depends what you want to use it for.

If you want to use it to game (i.e. HotS, Diablo 3, CS:Go) the $190 one with added stick of ram to take up to 8gb with a gtx 1030 or 1050 would be sufficient.

If you can boost it to 12-16gb and slot in a 1050ti it can even run PUBG.

If i was to buy one of these in need of a PC i would get the i7 9020, as I would want to up it to 16gb and slot an ssd anyway.

  • Would the i7 9020 be a good option for a cheap gaming rig if I bought a low profile 1050 or 1050ti to compliment it? Maybe the i5 version or even something else… ideally around $500 but would spend a little more if better option. Thanks in advance:)

    • +1

With this, you're looking at $531 after the discount. I think you can play a few games on medium setting.

    • +3

All three of them would be decent with a 1050 but deciding which one out of the three is a tough one. The 4770 one is pretty much good to go once you add the 1050, the 4570 one would need an SSD (so at least around $90-100) and the 3570 would probably need another 8 gigs of ram (around $120). You don't benefit too much from the 4770 as it's single thread performance is only 10% higher compared to the i5s, but you would get the extra ram and storage for the extra money you'd spend. So I think the choice is really between 4770 for $390 versus 3570 for around $310 assuming you get an 8 gig kit of ram.

  • Can I unmount the motherboard and screw it onto a regular ATX case? I just want more room to work with.

    Update: Google says no.

  • I have been stalking these refurbished for a while with the intention of installing a 1050ti (4GB) for my son to get into gaming. I Have been waiting for the sales today and am still thinking this good value:
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-i7-Gaming-PC-16GB-Ram-240G…

That way its installed before I receive it, has 16GB RAM and should play a few games for him anyway.

    • Yeah, except for the fact that you could save around $100 by buying the Dell one and putting a 1050Ti in it yourself. 4770 is slightly faster than 3770 too.

    • +1

with the 9020 i7, all you would need to purchase is a 1050ti (~$200) and a 1tb 2.5" drive (~$70). My estimation is that you would save between 150-200, so in my opinion its not a good deal. 4770 may be slightly faster than 3770, but not for $150-200

      • Not sure on your maths here. Thea deal above with a 1050ti (4GB) (~$250) and 1tb drive (~$70) is ($391 + 250 + 71 = $711). The deal I highlighted is $719.20 (with discount). So for the extra $8, I save having to purchase and install the other two items separately. Am I missing something?

        • +2

Prices of GPU gone up since august last year due to the crypto mining boom. When I bought my 1050Ti, the gigabyte low profile was $209. In the last few months i have seen it as low as below $200 (around christmas).

In addition to what cathole said below, you wont see significant performance increases between the i5s and the i7s. MSY has the gigabyte 1050ti low profile for $229 so ~$250 is a large overestimation.
Especially when you consider this seller you can get it for about ~$219 delivered

    • Probably don't need 16gb of ram for a child/teenagers rig, the i7 is also overkill for a 1050ti.

Getting the cheapest rig on the deal ($191.2), plus an extra 4gb ddr3 stick ($50), plus 1-2tb hdd (+$100), plus 1050ti ($250) should come to around 600.

  • Noob question. How does the "HP Compaq 8300 Elite Intel i5-3470 3.2Ghz USB 3.0 8GB Ram 250GB HDD Win 7 Pro PC" compare with the "Dell Optiplex 9010 i5 Desktop"?
I intend to put in a 1050 Graphics card in it as well.

  • Keep in mind recent CPU exploits. Recent Windows spectre updates could slow these down. Also possible issues with Intel even issuing microcode patches for older CPUs.

  • +1

    9020 i7's sold out.

Updated description for i7 HP's, although they only have Standard HDD's instead of SSD's.

    • damn

    • Hi OP, how many extra HDD or SDD can I put in the HP case?

    • Damn, the Dell SFF i7 had a better PSU (255w)…the HP 800 G1 i7 only has a 240W PSU with a classic HDD so it consumes a little bit more than a SDD
For an old and weak PSU the extra 15w can be usefull.

  • If you are patient, I think you can get better deals off gumtree or even ebay.

    For example …

    this yesterday …

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-EliteDesk-800-G1-SFF-i7-4770-…

combined with that 5% off coupon, you would have got an i7 for $285 admittedly only with 4GB of ram.

    • How do I find better deals mate?

        • Thanks, so when you mean by patient I guess I have to check that everyday until I get the perfect deal? Cos currently all the deals on there are all pretty shit.

        • @HarveySpecter:

Setup a saved search on gumtree with instant email notification. Takes at most 5 minutes to configure if you have a gumtree account.

          I purchased a Optiplex 9020 i5 off gumtree for $140 delivered. I had a guy a week before offer me his full optiplex 9020+monitor+keyb+mouse setup for $250 : https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/brisbane-city/desktops/deskt…

I'm not stating the rep's deal is bad - I just don't think it is 20% off normal ebay prices. You can regularly pickup i7 4770/4790 in a 9020 or HP G1 on eBay around the $350 to 400 mark. (Often cheaper). 20% off those prices would be a good deal.
Reps starting price however is essentially $500 for the i7.

I've been monitoring 9020 i7 and i5 prices for the last couple of months to utilize with hikvision ip cam setup.

  • so tempted to pull the trigger on both the 9010 and 9020

Only a few days ago I impulsed bought a laptop :O

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354613

  • Rep, Isn't the 9010 SFF with 4GB RAM comes with a Windows 7 Pro COA on the top of the CPU

    Dell Optiplex 9010 i5 Desktop @ $191.20 - 55 Units

    Intel i5 3570 3.4Ghz
    4GB Ram
    128GB SSD
    Loaded with Windows 10 Home

Any chance of getting something with an SSD and the i5 4570 at a good price. Some price seem to have got a bit higher and other sellers selling refurb units of same one are selling for 10% lower and you also stopped taking any offers (Make Offer, just Decline everything since there is a 20% off code)

    • Hi

Sorry i'm a little confused. What is it that your exactly chasing?

      • He wants the Dell 9020 SFF i5 4570 with SSD instead of the HDD at a cheaper price :)

      • Possible to have with 8GB RAM, SSD and i5 4570 ? Also the Dell 9010 come with Windows 7 Pro COA ?

  • Hi rep, just place an order before, is that hard if I canceled it and re-order? I like to re-order Dell Optiplex 9010 i5-3570 3.1Ghz 4GB with SSD.

  • Seems like too good a deal to pass up. I was planning on building a skullkanyon rig but for half the money I can get about the same bang for buck. Hopefully it isn't too loud…

  • Damn —— Third is the Dell Optiplex 9020 i7 SFF @ $391.20 - 25 Units Available SOLD OUT

    Needed 2 of these

  • -1

Gus be careful these machines use heat pipes and when the gas leaks or they run really fast

    • I want to replace the cpu fan and heatsink in mine. Bloody things loud without using SpeedFan

    • I've sold hundreds of thousands of these things for over a decade and that the first I've heard of that one.

  • Will I able to claim TRS when make a purchase over $300 on ebay sales ?

  • I just picked up 5 optiplex 740s at a garage sale on Sunday. I've fixed one so far and put an SSD in. Installed Ubuntu server and it's running great. Plex seems to be great and scripted rclone backups work without a hitch. It will now be my permanent Nas and media server.

I was tempted by these as the 740s are only dual core amd with 4gb ram. But then I remembered, I paid $10 for all five machines - kind of hard to complain.

  • there any Option to swap out the power supply ie Running purely as a home sever/router ?
