They will probably say its out of stock and cancel your order

    • Have you felt with AC before?

      • +9

Yep, ordered 2 hdds in a previous sale. They cancelled my order and told me they sold out but then upped the price on eBay. I’d never do business with them again

    • Or the price goes up like Video pro do lol

    • +8

See my other thread - AC put the price of the Gigabyte 1080Ti up by 22% for the sale.

      Don't do business with them.

    • +3

My order has been sent so they aren't cancelling this.

  • +1

shame about needing a new motherboard

    • -2

Yeah, the 8th-gen processors are meant to be Pin Compatible with the 6th-gen motherboards. But due to some changes they had to change the 8th-gens pins slightly.

It's the 9th-gen processors that start the next motherboard standard. And I think the 9th-gen will still start a new standard. Which means the 8th-gen will be a weird transition point.

AMD's Ryzen definitely got the win on Intel's 6th,7th,8th gen. I'd advise to stick to the AM4 Platform. Unless you want better Android, Linux, Hackintosh support. Or a slightly better single-threaded performance (mostly emulators/gaming at <=1080p resolution).

  • How much for new mobo and 16Gb ram?

    • +1

      ~350???

      • +2

hmm…a big investment. I might wait, doing fine with i7 4700K.

        • +6

Memory price is stupid at the moment

        • selling my 4770k setup for skylake was the biggest mistake, same performance (ocd) but less headroom with thermals & parts cost.

      • New z370 MB is about $200 and 16GB of ddr4 will be more than $200

    • +1

I just ordered the ASUS Z370-I from Amazon for around $230 delivered which is about $100 cheaper than locally.

    • Are the new gen CPU easier to install? Or same as previous gen?

      • +5

Not really sure what you mean? I think it's the same process..
Just don't do what this person did: https://web.archive.org/web/20161205095227/reddit.com/r/buil…

TL;DR: He installed the CPU fan and threw away the box with the actual CPU in it.

        • Cant be serious ouch. :/

      • Same socket (kinda, same pins, but Intel did something meaningless to make it incompatible) so same difficulty.

        • I 'believe' this was due to the increased core count and power delivery pins. Who really knows if it's meaningless or not.. sounds reasonable to me! ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Disclaimer: Not a CPU design engineer at Intel

        • Ok thanks.

  • Is it worth spending an extra $100 and going for this instead of the i5 8600k

    • +1

Pretty much the only reason I'm upgrading now is because I went for the i5 previously (haswell i5-4670K).
The i7's will last longer. Depends how frequently you want to upgrade..(and what workloads you're throwing at it)

    • Also depends on what you will be using the PC for. I chose the 8600K over the 8700K because of price and I also didn't see the requirement to have the extra hyper threading that the 8700K has for what I use my PC for. I only use mine for gaming and watching videos. If you did heavy video editing, I would probably pull the trigger on the 8700K though :)

    • +12

wait till they fix the meltdown in 9 series

      • That’s a good point!
After the patch computer and surface book running slow :(

      • It depends on whether Intel delays the 9th gen. It takes a long time to design new architecture so if 9th gen (or a rebadge of 8th gen) comes out this year then the bugs will still be in it. I reckon 9th gen will come out early next year if Intel did the right thing and overhauled their designs from when they learnt about the bugs last year.

    • No.

    • Depends on your usage.
      Only gaming? No.
Gaming and content creation/workstation-y stuff? Maybe.
      Mostly workstation-y stuff. Probably.

It's not going to hurt - unless you count $100 less in your pocket as hurt.

Remember that the further up the range you go, the less value for money you get. Classic case of diminishing returns.

    • +2

Definitely the 8700k. I said that last time 7 years ago when I bought my 2500k, now the i7 2600k beats the 2500k in gaming performance. Won't make that mistake again.

  • i might as well, do you think we will see a price drop anymore than this anytime soon?

    • Who knows, can't see it going too much lower in the near future. Depends how the upcoming Zen+ Ryzen chips will compare I guess (won't be out until April at least). For comparison, the last gen 7700K is still going for around $450 locally - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/37427/intel-core-i7-7700…

      • I pulled the trigger, I was set on the i5 8700k but for the $100 extra I think it's worth it for the upgrade. I don't do editing or anything like that so probably overkill but it will be more future proof I guess. Will be coupled with an gtx1080ti

        • Nice! Great pairing with the 1080ti. The i7's usually have a bit better resale down the track if that helps justify it at all.

  • +1

hmmm, would this be because of meltdown and spectre?

  • +7

how long has it been since CPU model numbers started to sound like white balance temperature values?

  • Anyone have motherboard recommendations?

    • u can try get Asus -z370e or z-370-f. U can also go for a cheaper one.

  • +2

the price is about to jump up by …%

  • +1

buying an intel cpu after meltdown

    breathes in
    AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • Hi fellas

This is a bit off topic but what do you think of this system for just under $1700?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-8930-Tower-Desktop-8th-…

    • Quite pricey. Didn't know you can get GTX 1060 with 8GB GDDR5 Graphics Memory (thought they are normally 6GB or 3GB).

DVD optical drive is outdated. You want at least a blu-ray drive (or UHD blu-ray drive).

    • It's a good price for what get with it.
But as always, it depends on your what your needs are and wants. Also depends if your able to build your own pc.

      • Thanks. My wife and I want to primarily use it for design work, using the Adobe CC suite of products. I have heard that we should go for a gaming PC for our design needs.

I haven't built a PC before and my wife doesn't trust my building ability so that's out as an option.

        • +2

A few things to watch out for the Dell:

          • It is i7-8700 for the Dell XPS, not i7-8700K
          • The graphics card is probably GTX 1060 6GB RAM (the GTX 1060 8GB RAM is a typo - they probably just copied the GTX 1070 8GB one and changed just the model number).
          • It's probably unlikely to be a Z170 chipset based motherboard.
          • Not a fan of a 1x1 wireless card (i.e. 3165). Probably not an issue for a desktop as you will probably connect it to a LAN port.

There are a few typos in the description so what exactly are you getting is not clear from the listing. The more you look at it, the more you see Dell cutting corners here and there for the item.

        • +1

The Dell looks good for Adobe Suite. 16GB Ram, setup Photoshop to use 10+GB great for many working layers, RAW file stitching multi shot pano's, large rendering jobs for video editing.

One thing I would do is get a second SSD 500GB or 1TB for your RAW file/ Project working drive. A SAMSUNG EVO 850 is good value/performance for money. The 1TB 7200 in the linked unit is good for backups but if you are working on video or photos moving them to a second SSD (not the same one as the OS) will make a massive workflow difference for speed.

        • +1

Yep this will be good for you then; even with video editing work.
          Netsurf is comment correct.
7-8700 can't be OC, which I doubt you'll do it anyways so don't need to worry.
          GTX 1060 is 6GB RAM (probably 3gb)
More worried about the PSU being 450w.

There is this as well if you want an the 8700k version, as well as customise it a bit.
Of course it'll need some updates, like GPU, SSD(which would be alot cheaper elsewhere) & windows key.
Nice to have would be 16gb ram, but highly recommended for design work.

        • @edfrane: What would you suggest as a good graphics card for $300-$400?

        • @mitch21:
GTX 1060 3gb is doable. 6gb will be better for the future/games/video editing+rendering.
Not sure about the AMD GPU as I'm not across them, but they tend to be cheaper.

  • People buying intel cpus should be more informed.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CSI6N6RKd5A&t=1149s

  • Should we not wait until the deal goes live ???? Most retailers seem to jack it up minutes before it goes live, Like Video pro etc.

    • PCTECH code has already activated.

PRAWNS code activated this morning too at 10:00AM.

  • Be aware of the alleged kernal bugs with intel cpu chips - should be a non-issue but something to consider.

    • Ryzen also has bug too, although it is affected by Meltdown rather than Spectre.

But generally speaking, the perf impact is pretty negligible and most users, such as people who only use their desktops for gaming most of the time, shouldn't be affected.

Got for one for hubby. Thanks OP

ALso note the I5 8400 Is an awesome price at $237

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Core-i5-8400-Coffee-Lake-P…

    • +1

Awesome - thanks been waiting to buy this just for gaming and watching media

    • they just jacked it up

  • I'm personally waiting for the next generation of CPUs from Intel and AMD before I upgrade, but this seems like a decent price.

  • +2

finally making the leap from the i7 920 to the 8700k

    • Same here! Was such a great run with the 920 :D

What mobo you planning to get? I'm thinking the Asus Prime Z-370 A

      • I impulse bought one also.

I like the ROG boards so if I can find one at an ok price I'll get that.

        • count me in on the impulse purchase…

Let's see if we can find some good deals on a mobo + ram combo =D

      • I was considering the feature rich ASRock Z370 Taichi

  • Hmm, it's now $638.84, making it $510.40. They added more stock too, when there were 6 remaining. Sale over I guess.

  • missed out by 5 mins

  • I had my whole cart on @ 987 after discount, hit pay now and all the prices got jacked now its gone up over $100.

Sort your prices out before the sale starts that is absolute rubbish!

    • +1

I'm guessing they had only a set number of processors on sale. They sold 36 before the returned the price back to normal. When it comes to sales like these, you snooze you lose. :)

      • I had four items in the cart, they were ALL increased.

        • Did they reduce the price of the other 3 items earlier today?

        • @eug:

I have screenshots of before and after I clicked "Pay Now"

        • @alexthebargainman: Oh I meant, were the prices of the other 3 items reduced earlier today? e.g. this processor was full price at 1am today, but it went down to $573.95 this morning, then it went back up to full price.

Looks like you just so happened to be caught right in the middle of the price change! Maybe you can cancel the order based on that.

  • +1

Crapppppppppp - went in to the get the i5 8400, it was $237, went to checkout and they raised the price. Grrrrrrr now it is $264

    • +1

Wait another 3 months and the z390 will be out. Proper core count and no compromises.

z370 is a tarted up z270, rushed out because Ryzen was kicking Intel's ass. It will have limited upgrade future.

      • Hmm is it really going to be in Q1? I was expecting it to be closer to the middle of the year… or even towards the end.

        • +3

Nah wait for Z990 in year 2050. Better upgradeability

        • 3 months puts us in Q2 and all indications are Q2 release for Z390.

      • no its quarter 3, about september.

      • +1

Everything Intel has a limited upgrade path.

        • Just wait for z400 in 2019

  • +1

The price jacking during a promotion should be made against ebay terms of service once it starts.

    • +1

They reduced the price temporarily this morning, then brought them back up to what they were before.

Are you saying stores should not be allowed to have time-limited promotions during a sale? I'd much rather have the opportunity to get something at a good price for a short period of time, rather than not at all.

      • It's called a promotion for a reason. If the store signed up to it then yes it should be for the full duration of the promotion.

        • -1

It looks like they allocated a certain amount of stock to be sold at the sale price. Would you prefer them just mark it as out of stock instead? Does it actually make a difference?

  • +1

With meltdown & spectre I wasn't sure if this was 20% off price or performance.

  • WHY DO I ALWAYS MISS THE GOOD SH1T -_-

  • HODL….. RYZEN 2 2600 March 1st $249

  • still operating my rig from 2010, i7 2600k.. fk knows.. theres nothing it cant do

  • Was almost at the edge but yeah let them bring out a NEW CPU…right now my old ass i7 3770k @ 4.5ghz serves me well combined with 1080ti for 1440p 165hz gaming.
