  • Any actual bargains though?

An example would be using this voucher with $649 Sydney/Melbourne to Tokyo deal and ending up paying just $616 (+ $6.16 Paypal fee giving you free insurance). I reckon that's cracker of a deal for full service Qantas flight, that too in cherry blossom season. Similarly you can make several deals piggybacking this voucher on other already lucrative deals through Skyscanner/IWTF etc. Hope this helps!

I would not recommend flying with these guys. I broke my leg last year and so was unable to take my flight overseas. We attempted to cancel the flight well in advance. Qantas was happy to issue a full refund but because it was booked through BYOJet we would have to get it canceled through them. BYOJet said they would cancel it without charge but the flight date came and went and we are still waiting on our refund….

    • Good to know mate. I thought Qantas would have been able to help. I can recall having rescheduled a MH flight directly with the airlines although I had used a agent website to book it. Maybe things have changed or rules vary between airlines. I hope you get your deserving money back though (hoping you have kept a track of their emails promising refund etc.)

      • Yeah we have been on top of it. We have sent follow up emails asking what's the hold up but still waiting.. fingers crossed

        • Refunds through bestjet take 10 weeks to process, perhaps something similar

        • @Geryatric: 10 weeks is an unreasonably excessive timeframe. I can't think of any other consumer industry were it takes 10 weeks to do a refund of a transaction.

        • @UponOccasion:
Yep it is a long time, I believe the said the airlines have 8 weeks to refund them (the agent) and then they had 2 weeks on top.

        • @UponOccasion: So you basically brought a 'non-refundable' sale fare without insurance and the airlines and BYOjet both still agreed on the refund as a goodwill, however, as you feel they are not quick enough to your liking, you NEGGED this deal..??
Not quite sure if this is the best use of your votes mate, but I guess I'll leave it to your conscience. Thanks :)

@singhdeals: I can't really recall the fare type so don't read too much into that. The reality is fare types like non-refundable ones are a legal grey area that airlines take advantage of in an asymmetrical relationship with the consumer. Increasingly it is being called into question as these types of sale policies cannot override consumer law. It's not unlike a storefront that states all sale items are non-refundable when in fact not only such a sign is wrong but also such signage is often considered illegal. It was a medical emergency beyond our control with evidence provided and is standard to accept a cancellation in those conditions. All parties agreed to a refund so is it not unreasonable to be upset when no refund appeared especially when it has been many weeks after the request was received. Typically travel insurance does not do much good anyway because often cancellation fees and admin associated with airlines might cost more than the fair itself and it was something similar in my case and cancellation before claiming is often a requirement. These types of dodgy practices are currently on the radar of the ACCC and hopefully will come to an end soon.

The neg is for the business that is selling the product as a warning that dealing with this mob is dodgy as you can see not only in mine but others comments on here. Now if the neg is really such an issue for you that it upsets you I can have it removed?

        • @singhdeals: Not sure whether you read the comment whereby Qantas has agreed to the refund (just like MAS has agreed to mine) due to the medical circumstances. However BYOjet are the ones delayed/avoiding the refund. That to me is being greedy and not compassionate.

    • That's what travel insurance is for.

If you bought an sale/saver fare there is usually a no cancellation / no refund policy. However you could claim the loss of fare on travel insurance if there was a medical reason you could fly (leg in cast etc.)

      • Yeah that may be the policy of airlines or agents but it is increasingly a practice at odds with the ACCC and consumer law. I was unable to flight due to a medical condition with which there was evidence and the cancellation process was undertaken in advance of the flight. Qantas said they would refund it, BYOJet said they would. To date nothing has come back to us. No travel insurance had been purchased yet because at the time of the incident I was still trying to determine the return date.

        • It's in the terms and conditions of the sale so I'm not sure you had a leg to stand on (pun intended). However Qantas will normally refund as goodwill but your purchase was not with Qantas but an online travel agent. Anyways seems like you got lucky in this instance.

        • @Geryatric: Sure you can make terms of sale all you like but they cannot override consumer law. So actually I did have at least one leg to stand on still.

Same thing with mine. Still waiting for their reply since October. Had an legitimate emergency and couldn't fly. Called Malaysia airline they they will refund base on compassion (due to my situation). However still yet to be processed by byojet. Looks like a lost hope there.

Id actually recommend booking directly with the airline if the difference in price is minimal. Much easier on changes etc.

    • That's indeed the ideal thing. Minimal the mediators, better it is. Having said that many a times (e.g. with Qantas) the fare difference may run into 100's and then getting cheaper ticket and using part of savings getting a good travel insurance makes a better package overall.

      • Qantas offers price match (T&Cs apply)

        • Not sure about price match. I think you are referring to Price Promise where you have to first buy at higher price and then apply for this on same calendar day hoping to get the difference reimbursed if the competitor website fulfills a long and extensive list of T & C's. If they had offered upfront price match (like Flightcentre) then that would have been a awesome thing though. Plus I think they don't accept PayPal as a payment option either (unless that has recently changed).

In the end, it all comes down to weighing down pros and cons and one's circumstances. Personally, I would prefer booking using BYOjet (other agents) when the saving is over $100 on my itinerary and have that PayPal (+credit card) insurance for added peace of mind (+ consider buying comprehensive insurance on case to case basis).

          @singhdeals:

Yes, that's what I was referring to.

I've used it twice (1 for hotel & 1 for airfares), and got difference back (& the 1000 bonus QFF points) both times.

Booking directly with the airline means that in the event that I do need to change or cancel my flights, I only need to pay for the airline's charges, not also that of the travel agent's.

Personally, I prefer paying directly with my credit card so that I have the comfort knowing that the travel insurance from my credit card has definitely been activated.

Use them once and never again with these guys. Admin fee for changes were ridiculous. I had to book a separate oneway return which became cheaper. Since then, I always go directly with airline.
