(Special Buys 27/1) Wireless Earbuds $39.99 @ ALDI

241

4K Action Camera has been removed

Can't vouch for quality as these are a new product developed by Bauhn. Not a bad price for truly wireless earbuds in my opinion,

Seems like a good buy, but would have been good if Aldi provided some specifications…

  • +5

I think you mean new product they rebadged from a cheap Chinese manufacturer and to promote this they paid a heap of so called journalists to claim this was as good as a GoPro.

    The camera isn't even 4K.

An insult from someone incapable of reading. LoL. These are not 4K. Truly amazing the number of people who will upvote a product and downvote anyone for pointing out that's it's crap.

As far as I'm aware, and also reading the specifications it is 4K, you're just stabbing in the dark there, please justify and have information before you try and make assumptions

I didn't make an assumption, I unlike you actually read the specifications before I posted.

      • +9

The specs say *4K recording is interpolated, not native. That means the image just gets "upscaled" to 4k and it doesn't actually record in 4K.

    • +1

I have one of these SJCam clones - which I paid about $50 for. It's decent, but agreed that it's not 4k, the sensor in them is actually not capable of 4k recording.

Interesting comment Maverick. Can you please provide some clarity or even better, some evidence to support your statement about journalists being paid to claim this is as good as GoPro?

Pretty clear isn't it? Notice the similar wording and the same reference to 4K with no mention that it's not really 4K.

Cautious optimism best describes how we feel after hearing about the latest product Aldi is planning to launch.
The supermarket giant is taking on the action camera market with a $69.99 variant from Bauhn.

We’ll be honest: we’ve never heard of Bauhn, the price is suspiciously low and their slogan of “Effortless Technology” doesn’t fill us with confidence.

Nevertheless, it won’t set you back too much more than a slab of premium beer and could be just as fun. The product will launch on Saturday, January 27 as part of Aldi’s daily special buys.

  • No doubt another item they wont stock much of and disappoint a lot of customers.

  • +1

The camera is just an SJCam clone. You can get them much cheaper: https://www.gearbest.com/4k-action-cam-_gear/?odr=low2high&o…

    • What china clone go pro would you recommend for that price range??

      • +1

All those SJCam clones are the same AFAIK, so whatever one is cheapest, or has the accessories you want (mine came with a whole bunch of mounts, remote control, etc).

If you want something better I assume the Xiaomi is better - although two or three times the price of one of these.

    These aren't 4K

    http://www.bauhn.com.au/product-listing/action-camera

    4K Ultra HD Recording*
*4K recording is interpolated, not native.

And for those who don't know…

Motion interpolation is a form of video processing in which frames are generated between existing ones by means of interpolation.

In other words, the camera makes up s**t between the frames to upscale it to 4K

    • +2

Pedantic correction… motion interpolation would increase the frame rate (fps), not the resolution.
It doesn't make up st between the frames, it makes up st between pixels. It's the equivalent of zooming in to an image past 100%, plus a bit more clever processing. It'll enlarge detail, but the detail isn't "real".

      • Exactly, enlarge and smooth.

  • +3

I have removed the 4K Action Camera as it has been pointed out the resolution is as not as the link suggests and could possibly be a clone of other products

    • +2

      Thanks for updating.

Aldi = OVERPRICED rebranded Asian goods.

    • Except for their mountain bikes when they sell them. Those ones are actually really good value.

    • +2

      You get warranty.

      • -5

        Haha, nice joke.

    • They aren't overpriced at all.

A lot of asian goods have poor quality control, broken/bad firmware and don't last very long.

If you buy from Aldi you get 1 year warranty, 60 days return if you don't like it, and tested and working firmware and features.

Yes asian goods can often work in your favour when 1000 ozbargainers before you have purchased one and can tell you its also good.

If you think asian products are so good, try purchasing some random technology and see what kind of quality you get… most of it is garbage.

  • What about if you don't care about 4k recording? Then how is the action camera in terms of quality and value?

    • What about if you don't care about 4k recording? Then how is the action camera in terms of quality and value?

Why don't you buy something decent, these are crap with false specifications intended to mislead people. Sony often sell their HDR-AS50 HD action cam for around $140 when the discounts of 20% are on offer in their ebay store, that is a much better camera.

      • I have a limited budget, under $100. I already have a go pro. Just looking for something for my son to use occasionally.

        • Look up the Eken H9r. Very good 1080p 60 quality.

    • I have one of these that I use everyday as a helmet camera on my motorcycle (basically a dash cam for my bike). Battery life is about 90mins. Replacement batteries are easy to get on ebay for under $10. Footage at 1080p60fps is decent. I'm sure it's not as good as $500 cams, but it's better than my phone, waterproof, and practically disposable if anything goes wrong. It has wifi so you can view the footage remotely (live) through your phone with a generic app. One complaint is that the datetime resets as soon as you take the battery out - even just swapping batteries.

  • +1

Anyone find any info on battery life on the earbuds?

  • +4

It amazes me that people will go on expensive holidays, tours etc but will be frugal when it comes to the camera. These are memories you will have forever! Don't record them on a potato.

    • +3

So, memories aren't as good if you didn't record them in 4k? I would say the opposite, you are only going to watch your holiday videos as an aid to memory - they don't need to be broadcast quality. The biggest thing to look for is usability because there's not point having a camera if you spend all your time distracted by it.

  • +3

Everyone here is going absolutely crazy over the lack of real 4k support for the action camera when none of you should have wanted the 4k feature to begin with.

1080p @ 60fps is the best setting even if it had real 4k. If you wanted something better then that, get 1440p or 4k @ 60fps.

not 4k @ 30fps, its an action camera…. clearly you guys need to go out and actually use some camera equipment.

    • +3

Agreed. If people are going to spend peanuts on an action camera they probably don't even have 4K TV's. Oh wait they probably picked up the el-cheapo 4K Aldi TV already.

But seriously, the only people who genuinely care about 4K wouldn't buy this product anyway…

  • The earbuds, are they heavily stocked? I popped into Aldi on my way home and couldn't see them.

Found and bought two at the St Kilda Aldi. Looks pretty neat, comes with charging case and can make calls.

      • Is the microphone good quality? My current cheapo ones I sound underwater apparently.

        • Good so far, no complaints and super comfortable. I had a Jaybird X3 before this and think the Aldi one's are great. I ended up buying 3 pairs (2 for my folks). The price is good!

  • Any way to find out which stores in melbourne have stock?
Northcote and south Preston both out
    Thanks

    • I saw quite a number of these at the Aldi at Northland Shopping Centre on 30 Jan. There was also one in the display shelf at the Aldi Preston Market.

  • +5

I bought a pair today (Monday) and I'm wearing them now.
Setup - a little tricky to start off with but you get it in the end. It took about 5 minutes. Somehow it just works. :)
Sound quality - not too bad. I'm using an iPod Nano. I set the EQ to ROCK (I'm listening to Trance .. lol) and it seems to be the better option. Don't expect Bose or Sony or Beats sound quality though. The quality is acceptable for the gym (or jogging, or in the garden), which is where I will be using mine.
Performance - for some reason the right ear bud kept fading out every so often but only for a second before coming back. Really annoying. I thought maybe it was running low on battery power. I was even thinking of taking them back to Aldi. But after jiggling it around in my ear it has been stable, very stable. No issues at all.
Comfort/Fit - they sit in your ears rather comfortably and snugly. I've tried tilting my head and shaking to see if they will fall out but they don't. Nice!

Charging Case - it was already charged. 4 led lights indicate charging status. The 4th light was flashing when I plugged it into the power point but stopped soon after, indicating fully charged. When you unplug the charging case the indicator lights stay on for about 20 seconds before powering off.
Headphones - were already charged but not sure to what level. No way to check.

Pairing - I had to pair both ear pods as both appeared on my iPod. But I cannot be certain if that was necessary or not. The ear pods themselves need to be paired to each other. I'll have to have a play with the settings/setup.

There is still plenty of stock in Perth (NOR). I thought my local Aldi would have sold out but there were about 10 boxes of them in the locked glass cabinet with the other electronics. I may even buy one as a gift, now that I know they are quite decent.

For $40 its a great pair of entry level wireless earphones/earpods.

** After typing this the right earphone has faded in and out a couple of times in the last 15 minutes. Darn!! still not as bad as when I first set them up though. Would be interesting to know if anyone else has this issue.

** Battery life - out of the box they lasted about an hour. I got a "power low" voice over message and then 10 seconds later I heard a "power off" voice message and they powered off. I'll fully charge them and use them again to get an idea of how long they truly last.

      UPDATES

DROPOUTS - I've tried the ear pieces with my iPod Touch and there has been absolutely NO syncing dropouts between the two ear pieces (as mentioned above where it fades out for a second in the RH ear piece).
I can only conclude that my 7th gen iPod Nano's Bluetooth signal may be too weak (??) and is the cause of the syncing issue between the two ear pieces). ?? Thus a smaller device with weaker BT signal may cause the Bauhn ear pieces to struggle … and could cause the ear pieces batteries to drain faster..??

PAIRING - Both ear pieces appear on your device (phone/ipod) as a Bluetooth device but you only need to Pair one of the ear pieces to your device etc.

SYNCING EAR PIECES - Syncing the earpieces to each other can be a bit tricky. Double clicking both ear pieces is supposed to make them sync but sometimes one of the ear pieces says "last number redial". Annoying!! I simple powered them off and back on then double click again.

BATTERY LIFE - used for 1.5 hours at the gym with no issues. Used elsewhere for 2.5 - 3 hours max before it powered off.

CHARGE TIME - I don't really know … I'd need to keep a close eye on them when charging. I suspect it may take an hour.

CHARGING CASE - fully recharges the ear pieces & appears to leave enough juice in the case for another full charge. I haven't fully gauged this though. The ear pieces, when placed in the case, connect magnetically. Thus no need to have to ensure they are lined up. The magnet also stops them from falling out if you open the case upside down for example. Nice!

GYM USAGE - didn't fall out of my ears. Fits snugly and comfortably. No issues with sweat (considering the two charging connector points touch your skin).

RANGE - around 10 meters (30ft) as specified in the Aldi UK site but only in direct line of sight, with no walls or obstacles in between. The range will be roughly halved if there are walls in between. At the gym, steel frames of gym equipment can impede the signal too, even if your Bluetooth device (iPod or whatever) is on the floor in close proximity.

FLASHING GREEN LED's (when you're wearing them) - these tend to draw unnecessary attention to you. They are intermittently flashing on and off. A waste of battery life also imo. So if you do buy these you may want to get some black tape and cut discs that you can use to cover the LED's. Of course you can remove the tape once you're done at the gym. You just don't want them flashing and drawing attention to you … unless you're an attention seeker … heheheh. :P

OVERALL SATISFACTION - As an audiophile (easily irked by really poor sounding headphones) the sound is actually quite acceptable and satisfying. If the sound was really tinny and muddied I would have returned them. Again, these ear pieces aren't Bose/Sony etc quality but they are surprisingly good for what they are. I think the midrange sounds could have greater clarity (they're just slightly muddy) but higher ends and lower ends are good. A bit more sparkle and depth would make them sound really good. And again, for fitness and on the go listening these ear pieces are acceptable. They are better than some of the $10 - $20 Philips/Sony in-ear wired headphones I've used.
Remember to play with the EQ settings on your device and find which setting works the best for you. Some make the quality sound bad and some improve it greatly.
      :)

      • BATTERY LIFE - My iPod Touch (still running iOS 6) has a Bluetooth battery level icon (icon only) indicating how much charge is left in the ear pieces. I believe from iOS 9 onward the battery level can be displayed in "percentage", which gives you a more accurate idea.

MICROPHONE - completely forgot these have mic's. LOL …. I haven't tested the mic function yet. One day, if the need/opportunity arises ….
Looks like both ear pieces have a mic.

I'm having the same issue, except my left earbud keeps dropping… have you found the reason/ fix or workaround??? I'm streaming off my Dell XPS and phone (Same result for both)

      • I sync my right earbud to my iPod and then sync the left earbud to the right earbud, you might be syncing your left earbud to the right earbud? If that's the case then it will be the same issue where the dropout is between the two earbuds, or so it appears.
I think the bluetooth connection between the earbuds is weak, possibly because they are small and don't have enough power to have a strong connection. So if for example I put my hand on my head which slightly blocks the signal between earbuds, the sound will drop out.

But it doesn't do it constantly which is good otherwise it would be really annoying and I would have taken them back.

I think the trick/fix is to ensure the earbuds are positioned snugly in the ears so they don't move, not even the slightest.
Then ensure that your laptop/phone is in close proximity and that nothing is obstructing the part of your devices where the BT signal is being transmitted from. I'm just guessing here but I think if the earbud that connects to your device is struggling to get a signal then the other earbud will suffer and drop out.

Once I have the earbuds in the right spot I don't seem to have a problem therefore I can have my iPod in my back pocket and be walking around and not have any drop outs.

Good luck and let us know if you find something that solves your issue. :)

  • Ok, I've found the seller that Aldi more than likely gets the earbuds from, they're on Alibaba:
    Link

They're the exact same ones that Aldi has branded as BAUHN and that ERL on Indiegogo has branded as their own. Just letting you know where they come from in case you want to see the real specs or something, also I tried contacting the seller (since ALDI near me is out of stock) and they don't send single items, only bulk.
