    iPhone 4S. Yeah. :-)

  • Was wonder if I should use it in Japan in a couple weeks time, but all the reviews seem to give it 1 star :/

    • +11

Same, this review on Product Reviews sealed the deal for me. (Overall rating of 1/5 stars from 5 reviews)

"I thought I was buying data or getting access to Wi-Fi spots.. But it is just an encryption service for when you connect to ALREADY free Wi-Fi (eg. Wi-Fry, free airport Wi-Fi, free Shopping Centre Wi-Fi etc etc). It might be useful if you need security for your passwords, credit details…but if you are googling stuff, social media, txt etc, save your money bc this has not given me any roaming data. I now have to buy something else to actually get online when not at a free Wi-Fi spot."

Going to give this a wide berth.

or just use a VPN, buy one or use the freebie included in Opera.

Well I was in Japan end of last year, finding reliable working free wifi was a joke, even finding Fon WiFi in Japan was hard to find which was free with my Telstra services, only found like a couple 'FON INTERNET' hotspots in Japan, ended up roaming over 4G which was not cheap…

Isn't this a better deal than B mobile? I am intending to purchase this when I go Tokyo in the next couple of months

      • Not really. It is more expensive and has less data and days included.

        • more expensive? isnt the docomo only $36?
bmobile is $39.77 aud after conversion

less data? isnt the docomo unlimited 1gb speed?
bmobile is only 5gb as compared to unlimited

days … i'm there for 7-8 days so just nice
bmobile is 21 days, which is not useful when i'm back

bmobile is also on docomo so same network

        • @LurvinOZB: About $33.30 delivered on Amazon which includes delivery to your hotel in Japan. Docomo sim is $33.95 (for 2GB) + $5 shipping unless you buy 2 or more sims.

They use the same network so speeds should be about the same. This means your options are to get only 2GB data (compared to 5GB on Bmobile) before speeds are dropped to so slow it will be barely useable, or you could get the 1Mbps unlimited deal which will be about 3-5x slower than what I found with Bmobile.

@donga100: ahhh. I was referring to the 1mbps plan. I think 1 Mbps is enough for Netflix or YouTube on small mobile and iPad screens.

Max or top Mbps of 3-5 Mbps on paper depends on many variables, whilst Telco capping speeds could mean a constant 1 Mbps thoroughfare. I could be wrong but at the end of the day, am going for quantity since it's really just to keep entertained during boring periods. Besides, only a week or so, not a perm thing to consider.

If your going via Singapore you could buy a Starhub card at Changi Airport (also available on most Jetstar international flights).
        http://www.starhub.com/personal/mobile/mobile-phones-plans/p…

A S$15 sim card would get you 2.4Gb to use in Japan over 30days.
A S$32 sim card would get you 2Gb to use in Japan over 10days + 4.8Gb to use over 30 days.

Download TownWifi instead. There are a lot of Japan free wifi apps but this is the one that all of my Japanese friends use/recommend. In saying that, it still wasn't very good or reliable so I would recommend just buying yourself a sim card instead.

  • Wouldn't be better to get a long life Telstra Prepaid plan and use Telstra Air and Fon Wifi?

  • +2

Would be better to just buy a local sim card at the airport when you arrive. When I was in Vietnam last week there were vendors selling sim-cards before we even went through immigration.

    • Buying a local SIM card is one thing but you need to buy data as well, most local SIMs have calls included but not data. At least this is what I found in EU. Depending on where you are going the minimum packages are quite steep and not worth it if you aren't there for long. Ended up relying on free wifi and hotel wifi only.

An example was I was quoted $25 for 1GB of data. I'd go through that pretty quickly.

      • +1

it really depends where you travel in the world.
In some countries data is included and is dirt cheap and others it isn't.

In vietnam it is dirt cheap.

EU get one of these sims before leaving home https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/356195

When i travel i only really use data for maps (pogo an exception).
Anything more intensive - FB, Youtube, research i do on wifi.

        • That's really good for that price w 5GB inc

        • And even for maps, you can download Google maps for the area you are going to before you go, or while you have WiFi and then use them offline while you don't have service.

    • 200,000VND (equivalent of $10 AUD) for around 3 gigs of data, as I recall reading. 3GB is already plenty when you consider that most 3-star motels and inns in Vietnam give you free internet access (slightly slow).

      • Yeah. I planned to get a SIM card, but I didn't end up needing it considering every cafe and hotel that I stayed in happened to have internet.

      • 200k vnd was 5gb with Viettel (Jan this year) 'best' supplier.
200k can get you up to 40gb with other suppliers - might limit you to like 1/2gb a day so best ask.

    • +1

Do not buy from airport unless you absolutely have to. They are the biggest rip off there. Get it from convenience stores outside for the best pricing and most convenient method.

  • $15 is tempting.. but you can get a reasonable SIM card deal in most countries for about $30.. Connect just about anywhere anytime.

    • +5

This is actually a VPN service. incorrect - corrected by bchliu

It is a product that isn't comparable to

      • Roaming SIM cards
      • Tablet SIM cards
      • Prepaid Plans

In most countries you can already get free Wifi — New Zealand, Singapore, europe, vietnam, would provide free wifi in lots of places, so having this pass doesn't give you much advantage anyway. There are also lots of free VPN trials that you can take advantage of, e.g Tunnelbear.

      • That is not what Worldfi is. They on sell WIFI services from telcos and major agencies together via an app. This is not just about countries with free WiFi access but everywhere (eg. Telstra air, AT&T WiFi etc). You are mixing two VPN terms here: Worldfi probably connects all of these networks together to manage it as a single entity (Virtual Private network that they own). This is different from the tunneling VPN example you gave Tunnelbear which secures and protects your traffic until it reaches the other side of the tunnel to become anonymous.

In essence, they are basically the same as virtual mobile provider like BOOST mobile that sits on top of Telstra network

      • If someone on OzBargain actually tries Worldifi it would be interesting to find how what you get compares to how it is promoted.

        https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/worldifi/id1166843278?mt=8
In the itunes entry for the app is says a 30 day pass is $1.49 via In-App Purchases.
This is a lot less than via Australia Post.

        https://www.worldifi.com/
"A 30 day pass gives you unlimited access to all of
these hot-spots. with no hotspot passwords or logins.
VPN security. and no download limits."

Further down the page it says.

"Each 30 day pass comes with 1GB included VPN usage.
You can buy additional VPN access for only $0.99 per 1GB'

There is a link to their hotspot map.
Noticed some of their hotspots are in shops located in the ocean so the map is a bit random.
        http://worldifi.ipass.com/

When compared to the fon map (Telstra Air etc) they only seem to have access to a small number of fon hotspots.

  • What's a cheap alternative choice for good data in Europe? I'm heading off to hungary and Croatia, I know you can buy local sims there but I'm pretty sure they don't give you that much data and the cost will probably add up after a few weeks on the road.

  • Are people really sure that it's just a VPN service? All over their site it says unlimited access to INTERNET specifically, did those people just buy the wrong thing or ?

    • +1

technically it's NOT a VPN service in the traditional sense of security tunneling on a personal level. They basically have global agreements with various vendors (mainly telcos who offer wifi) to get bandwidth and access from them and then package it up as their own much like virtual mobile provider. This connects together as a virtual "private" network that belongs to worldfi.
