I once broke a Stanley screwdriver putting a case screw into a computer case. Very poor quality tool. Has anyone had better experiences?

    • For quality, I'd go for the old Australian made sidchrome screwdrivers. Can be found at markets for couple of dollars .
Could probably get away with having less screwdrivers also, because with the vintage sidchrome screwdrivers, the small tip on end stays perfect even with heavy use.

Stanley make good screw drivers, the ones with clear yellow and green handles. See a post lower down for a link.
      These ones are adequate.
I own both, and would only buy the clear handle ones again.

      • umm, not anymore.

I have a Stanley set from the 70's that still looks new.

The new ones are made from some form of cheese, it seems.

I now buy German Wera or Wiha which are very good quality but a single screwdriver costs 5 times as much as this set.

Sad how my old Australian stuff (stanley, sidchrome etc) is now being replaced by overseas brands (Wera, Bahco, Knipex etc). Sign of the times I suppose.

    • I once broke a coffee machine because I took it home and when I opened the box all the plastic trays inside were cracked and broken.

      Sometimes things are faulty.

    • yes, they are as good as other cr-v screw drivers. also they have matt finish on the ends , which means the phlips
don’t slip out of of the screw as easily … chrome is slippery, has no grip.

big differences in price start to occur if you get a case for storage, or shape and material used for the handle, blade wise seem to be the same steel just different finish.

    • Same experience here Dalton - broke one of the bigger drivers after very little use. Nice grip though.

I REALLY do not need 49 screw drivers, but seems like a good deal so might have to buy it :) .
If I resist, 1 day I will be in desperate need of that no.37 flathead .. and I wont have it 😯
    I'LL BE SCREWED :(

  • Does anyone have a list of the specific bits? I don't have a torx set in my toolkit atm…

      • Thanks for the reply… unfortunately, am I being dumb in not seeing 49 screwdrivers listed in that list, and a complete lack of mentioning Torx bits? #_#

          @nocure:

Thanks, was just about to post the link to the old Ozb link where the details are posted. :)

EDIT: sadly for me, I'm looking for one that contains a T5 tip. :(

        • @kwchaz:
There is a T5 in this set if you ordered one.

  • +2

Thanks OP this will help me put my life back together.

    • +3

I'd caution against using these, your life will be completely screwed.

    • +1

you should probably torx to someone.

      • +1

Yeah time to stop making hexcuses

        • +1

crv me a river, you make a dodgy case.

  • +16

https://www.bunnings.com.au/stanley-20-piece-screwdriver-set… buy this set and it will last you forever unlike the cheap set that will crumble like chalk.

    • +2

I agree wholeheartedly with this.. this is a far better quality set for the extra $12.

I bought the precision screwdrivers included here separately and they have not missed a beat with anything I have thrown at them.

    • I wish I had know this before buying the yellow/black set, they're utter rubbish

      • I own that set without the precision ones, good screw drivers for sure.

    • I have found the tips on the No 2 Philips a little soft on these ones.

  • +5

Potentially the most annoying case of all times, but personally havent had any issue with the quality of the actual tools.

    • +1

I strongly disagree (unless you lose the word potentially). It is a truly terrible case for some decent screwdrivers.

      • yeah, case is the issue, too complex and plastic means it will break, you will end up needing to store in a plastic box.

if they put into a proper blow mounded case then it would compete with their other screw driver sets.

    • Great quality set bougt for $20 with this deal
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32391
      7 years ago WOW!!!!

    • So agree! Crap case, had to buy a tool case just to put them in.

      • +1

yep, crap case screw drivers are fine ….. once the case goes, you start to loose them unless you are organised.

    • The case on this set is the bane of my entire existence. I'm at the point that I'll probably give them away to someone I don't like and buy a set of Kinchromes.

The screwdrivers themselves are great (except the bit driver, which is kinda cheap and dodgy, but I dont use it anyway).

      • entire existence?

    • +1

Yeah I've got these but wouldn't recommend them.

Even in the easiest screwing applications bits of the end start flaking off and rounding, it's crap.

Spend the extra money and get the set AMLagonda posted above.

  • +1

Greenacre has about 100 sets in the screw isle If anyone is looking

  • +1

I have a set, they are crap. 2 came pre-bent and the larger ones appear to have light surface rust. I regret buying them.

    • +1

I wholehearted agree. I don't inderstand why everyone is raving about this set.

      • people think stanley is a good brand

        • they are one of the largest tool manufacturers globally and manufacturer many tools in the sane factories under different brands e.g they own and make sidchrome and it won,t be a special factory but the same production line used for their other tools.

unless you start going for german tools like stahlewille, hazet, dowidat etc or japanese like koken all at much higher prices.

old aussie made sidchrome …. i still own some, nothing special except nostalgia when australia still made stuff, and the cheap stuff from japan used to break.

more of the differentiators are around design eg noslip, flank drive and finish rather than metallurgy.

    • +1

      Lol @ two came pre-bent

  • +1

Had mine for a while for household use. No issues over the years, not even with the case (it's annoying, but it hasn't broken yet).

  • Had my set for a couple of years and use them all regularly. Haven’t had a single issue with any of the drivers. But as others mention, the case is fiddly and the little black clip falls off at times which can be a pain.

  • I have purchased this same item for the same price two months ago from bunnings.

Its a good set, id prob say its better in a toolbox, the only Phillips you use is all multi heads.

  • A tradie mentioned in passing to me once that all Stanley tools (Non electrical) had a lifetime replacement guarantee at the place of purchase (With receipt)

Anyone confirm or deny? It's a little tricky to work out from the site: http://www.stanleytools.com.au/Warranty_terms

    • +1

Your tradies view is correct (IMHO) but I can't confirm it first hand.

The warranty terms are actually quite clear in that they say it's a warranty for the 'useful term of life' and they simply list the exceptions to that rule.

However the warranty clause is sufficiently broad on exclusions (damage, wear and tear etc) and leave it open to the discretion of the retailer and/or stanley rep (or nominated/delegated rep).

They also note they can replace a tool with a refurbished item as part of the replacement process.

So to pick an example, if you have a Stanley screwdriver and the tip snaps and you take it back (with your original receipt) - they'd have to make a judgement call on whether it snapped because that was a manufacturing defect or outside of scope for use of the product.

If I had the handle fracture on me as I tried to tighten or loosed something (and the metal wasn't damaged) I'd definitely look at getting a replacement if I could find the original receipt..

I have some Stanley tools that are at least 20-30 years old and there is no way I'd still have a receipt or any other proof of purchase so the warranty is of limited used.

As a comparison there are a number of american tool manufacturers that offer a no questions asked lifetime replacement policy on their tools even if you picked them up for $1 at a garage sale and weren't the original purchaser - again provided there is no obvious misuse. They don't even ask for any proof of purchase, just bring the tool to them and they'll swap it. A number of people have posted about getting tools replaced 50 years later.. That's the kind of warranty I'd like.. (and have to be willing to pay for..)

  • I have one of these… Sounds good at face value but out of the 49 I have probably only used 3-4.

  • +4

Whoever designed the carry case should be sacked. And then sacked again.

    • And then shot repeatedly

  • Confirmed available at Nunawading VIC coz of mixed reviews didnt pick up

  • These are okay - perfectly fine for a bit of home DIY work.

The case on the other hand is hopeless.

  • I have a craftright set (generic bunnings brand which looks like the Stanley set above) which I have used for 10 years for all sort of DIY and home renovation in my workshop and they held up totally fine. My mate who is a signwriter uses the same set for his work with no dramas. I don't think this Stanley set would be any worse than that.
Do these bad reviews belong to people with poor dexterity, or people who don't know how to use a screwdriver properly? I am astounded somebody can break a screwdriver driving a case screw which has been mostly replaced by thumb screws nowadays. you don't need to apply a lot of force to do that!

    • Try it out for yourself mate, when the tip starts shaving off you'll know it sucks!

      • +1

Yeah, that's the only way to find out I guess. I'll get a set for the sake of science!
