  • nice, wish this was on 6 months ago.

now the house is all tricked out and the wallet is all empty

  • waiting for the xiaomi are better because they are cheaper posts.

Waiting for Nest is better because they are more expensive posts?

      • *are better

        • I was referring to the brand itself, not their products.

        • @Lorindor: So, “Nest is better because their products are more expensive”?

        • @chymb:

          Si.

Xiaomi are better because they are cheaper! :)

    • I'd say so, but my xiaofang is useless after accidentally updating to the 3.3.3.25 firmware version. I tried all the non-invasive techniques without success, and I am now waiting for my eBay stuff to arrive to try to downgrade using a serial connection, which will be painful.

      • Is that a USB-TTL 3.3 V adapter cable?
I had to use one to unbrick my Netgear R7000 router after installing 3rd party firmware.

Did it arrive and unbrick your camera ?

        • Yes. It hasn't arrived yet.

@tderevko: mine worked - but beware 2 things:

          • the one I got had very thin wires to the pin plugs - 2 of them broke off easily - but luckily it still worked with just 2 of the 4.

          • many of the low cost ones use a counterfeit chip - you can use an old driver (before the genuine chip manufacturer changed the driver to not work) however Windows 10 will (un)helpfully automatically update the driver so you only have a few mins before having to downgrade the driver again.

        • @systmworks: Thanks for the tips… I bought a CP2102 USB to TTL USB UART Module Serial Converter, and will solder the "cable". Let's see how it goes. It is annoying that we have to do that to "convert" a camera because Xiaomi doesn't want people using the device overseas. That makes sense if the camera is used as a Chinese national spy item… hahaha…

Prices like these is why I buy Xiaomi

I grabbed 2 more Xiaomi/Honeywell smoke alarms this morning from the Gearbest deal for $60 including priority shipping. Less than half the price of the nest. I'll have 4 in total now, and they are excellent. Some (all?) states require hardwired alarms in new builds and renovations, but these are a great supplementary unit

      • Hardwired or 10 yr batteries.
Hardwired if you replacing a hardwired unit

  • Is there a spec wise equivalent Xiaomi product to Nest's Outdoor cameras ($319 now $219)?

    • +1

      Yep.

      https://www.yitechnology.com/yi-outdoor-camera-specs

But i wouldn't recommend it as you can't integrate it into the mijia app. Yi is like another xiami ecosystem (seriously Xiaomi stop it…..).

But if you decided to give it a go, make sure it is an international version.

  • looks like a gen 3 smoke alarm is on the radar. Jb had them down to 118 as well

  • Hmm tossing the idea of buying xiaomi non Aus compliance product vs this one. Especially when claiming insurance…

    • The nest are great, they talk to the kids and tell them what to do, which is better then just an alarm.

  • You can also get OW price beat as well, making the camera $208 and smoke detector $141.

  • Anybody got theirs from this yet? Mine still has not shipped…
