Nokia 8 64GB - $479.20 Shipped (HK) @ Vaya eBay

520
PRESENT20

Great phone with SC 835, 4gb ram and generally good reviews. Comes in Silver or Tempered Blue. Grey Import obviously.

I was interested in this but pulled the trigger on the LG G6 which are both very comparable - G6 has bigger screen and better IP rating anyway.

ive got an LG G6 and love it, but this has got to be one of the cheapest snapdragon 835 phones going around?

  • Its is best from Nokia only drawback is 5.3 screen which feels quite small specially when you are use too big ones now but in this price it is totally a bargain.

    • +6

I think the drawback is the camera

      • Camera?? youre joking right, one the best cameras out

        • +3

The camera itself is great but I feel the software lets it down a bit. I've been using this phone for the last few months. Low light performance is average at best. I've had situations when the camera locks up and won't focus or take the picture for 3-5 seconds. I don't have any other complaints about this phone. Stock Android is good, hardware feels well built.

          @ggop:

the camera sensor size is 1/3inch with a aperture f/2.0. I wouldn't expect the low light shot to be good.

        • +2

I owned a lumia 1020, so I have a higher expectation in their flagship smartphone.

        • @aussie216618:

That's a fair comment, however I've been disappointed with the daytime pics too. The pics themselves are fine, it's the lockup that's annoying. There's a blur too sometimes, which might come back to the small sensor issue. Anyway, I'll use it for 2-3 years and see what's next.

        • @wtigers
          best camera Compared to what??
I think it is very ordinary

        • @ggop: Most reviews explain the same issue. The camera seems to struggle in low light conditions.

        • @costas60: its improved after the update

Not trying to rain on your parade but I bought this phone yesterday using pick5 for 5% off from this place: https://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Nokia-Nokia-8-Silver-64GB-4G-LTE-E… and it worked out to be $475.

    • +21

It was a glorious parade, until you came along…

    • Damn haha but 20% off an inflated price feels better than 5% off a good price #ebaysales

  • $384 if you combine with ww ebay gift card and cashrewards

    • Hmm where to get eBay gift card?

    • How???

        1. get ww egift from cashrewards for 5% discount.
        2. go to your neariest ww and grab the ebay gift cards(if they still have it instock).
        3. go to self checkout machine scan the gift card and your rewards card and pay with your ww gift card.

you get 5% off(ww gift card) + 10% off as rewards dollar(ebay gift card)
        so 5%+10%+20%+1%=36%

        • How much in dollar value do you get in WW egift cards to start the chain?

        • 20% already included in the OP so you cannot make it to $384

        • -1

if you want to end up with $480, wouldn't you buy $400 worth of ebay gift cards, get 10% back as WW rewards ($40), and then buy a $50 ebay card (paying $10 after rewards), and get a $5 worth of WW points back.

So your actual outlay is $410 in egift credit for $450 of ebay credit, and to buy that $410 you need to spend 410*0.95 = 389.5 in actual cash. Then you'd have to pay the remaining $30 some other way (e.g. paypal).

So actual outlay = $30 + $389.50 = $410.50. Then you'd get a cashback of 1% a few months later, so maybe $5 back since I think it's off the non-discounted price. And I'll subtract the $5 WW points that you're left with.

          So all said and done, it's basically 410.50 -5 -5 = $400.50

p.s. you can't really include the 20% off, since that 20% off is already included in the $480 headline price (it's $599 without this).

        • I was thinking $450 in egift to get 500 in ebay credit. I think it came to ~$406 in my calculations but then you are left with credit in ebay.

        • +2

@nathand: $450 in egift gets you $450 ebay credit + $45 of WW points, so you put in $5 to get to $50 to buy the extra $50 of ebay credit, but get $5 of WW credit back (so call it wash on both the $5). That $450 costs you 450*0.95 using cashrewards 5% off egift cards = $427.50. Then subtract 1% cashback, e.g. $5 or $6 back, so pay around $422. Then you have $20 credit left in eBay. Personally I highly dislike leftover credit (unless I'm certain I'm going to spend it before it expires).

  • Great phone, worth every penny

As the OP says it's not far from the LG G6, but in terms of hardware specs (especially the SoC), it's not hugely short of the OnePlus 5T either… Although the camera has lower pixel count, the quality seems similar. And although the oneplus supports more bands, they're not used in Australia, so they both have all bands for all 3 networks. Main downsides are single SIM instead of dual SIM in the oneplus, slightly faster modem in the oneplus (cat 9 vs cat 12), and bigger screen on the oneplus (5.3 inches vs 6.01), and more RAM in the oneplus (4 GB vs 6 GB), and bigger battery (3090 mAh vs 3300). Nokia 8 is better in a few areas in that it supports SDcards unlike the oneplus, and has a higher res screen (but they're both so high you won't notice), and is splash proof.

I don't know what the bootloader situation & custom ROM & software updates situation is for the Nokia 8 (anyone?), but the LG G6 it's likely to be not good (LG lock their non-EU bootloaders, so custom ROMs may exist but you can't use them, and their software updates are woeful - e.g. the LG G4 only got software/security updates for 15 months after it was released and since then absolutely nada!). Oneplus seem to be fine with unlocking the bootloader and there's usually a variety of custom ROMs.

Latest prices on this site for grey import models with 64 GB put the Nokia 8 around $480, the LG G6 around $530, and the oneplus 5T around $570 - they kind of typify the "budget flagships" or "last year's flagships" segment.

Great summary! For me IP rating is such a big deal I couldn't even consider the 5T.
My LG G3 got water damaged after 2 months and then had a S7 and using it at the beach, pool etc is such a plus.

    • +1

Thanks for the review. I thought this was a dual sim or is the 2nd sim is a 2G therefore not worth mentioning?

    • +1

I wouldn't really compare a 5.3 inch screen phone to a 6 inch one. Screen size is likely the most important consideration for most people buying a phone, you either want a smaller dimension phone that feels good in the hand and comfortable in the pocket or you want a big screen for a better porn watching experience.

The OLED in the oneplus is one of the better looking screens on the market as well.

I love the fact my Nokia has almost stock Android. No crap manufacturer apps that can't be removed (ahem Sansung).
I have the latest Android 8 Oreo software, and receive Android security updates within 2 weeks of them being released by Google.

5.3 inch screen size is not an issue for me - I would hate having a 6 inch screen.

      I paid $527 2 months ago.

Mine came with overseas charger and crappy adapter. I recommend buying a Blitzwolf BW-S6 quickcharge3 charger.

      • Are you having the same camera issues as the other guy? He was complaining about lag and image quality esp low light situations

        • Haven't noticed any camera issues. Don't use the camera much though.

Does anyone know if this supports band 28(700)?

  • What does everyone think of the Tempered Blue verses the Silver colours?
What do they look like in the flesh?

    • I have the blue. Decided on matt blue not shiny blue to avoid fingerprints.
I think the blue is great, it's sort of a dark slate colour. Subtle.
      I felt silver/grey was a bit boring.

  • Anyone got any idea how long shipping takes with Vaya.

    Currently phoneless.

    • It took them 2 weeks to send Huawei Mate 10 to me. It's shipped from HK.

    • I bought my LG G6 from Allphones ebay on Sunday and it arrived today - very quick and still on sale.

      • Got a link and what did it cost?

      • I'm actually only after a OnePlus 5T. Thought Vaya might be a bit faster than going the Chinese Stores / Aliexpress. Will just go Hong Kong Goldway, which I have baught from numerous times and are pretty quick if shipping via DHL.

  • Yes give me a 6'' Nokia.

    • wait for nokia 7 plus

    • i have a 1520 if you want :)

  • Great little device but Nokia 8 2018 launch is probably happening soon. MWC maybe.

    Hi Guys,

I have Nokia 8 and just like many felt that the stock camera app lacked some features. Installed Google camera and it is back to it's form. Expecting some update from Nokia on the camera app, till then, use google app, you wont be disappointed.

BTW, the stock camera takes awesome pics in daylight, not bad at night.

  • Silver/steel colour is now $471.20

  • I received my phone with no problems. Only took 5 days (3 business days) to get here! Anyone found a good screen protector for this?
