Are subwoofers in cars still a thing?

    • +9

Yes. High-end stereos are definitely still a thing.

Chucking a terrible subwoofer like this in your VS Commodore is, sadly, also still a thing.

I'm guessing not as much but that could just be me getting older and out of the car audio scene now. The car audio sections in these stores are getting smaller and smaller though, but the specialist stores could be getting bigger. Most cars have decent enough sound systems these days for most people and the systems are too integrated which makes it harder to change head units too.

      • Car stereos are not good. But they are good enough.

Also, the days of changing headunits are long gone. Line out converters are used now rather than spending huge money on aftermarket Alpine HVAC intergrated units.

Double din stuff is just so rare now.

      • The internet is killing car audio sections in stores.

My last proper car audio purchase was a set of Alpine Type X Reference splits (SPX-17REF for anyone interested). Under $300 from the USA. Locally, $600+

I've bought a cheap $70 stereo + $40 speakers etc.. in a bricks and mortar store due to shipping killing off any discounts but the high end stuff is all cheaper online

Does this come with a souvlaki?

Play the right music and you can be fully Sikh too.

  • Uleh….

Back when we all had that car whereby the sound system was valued greater than the car itself. We were all the sikkest!

I wonder if this sub would go alright with my stunning after-market Focal speakers?

    • For subs stick with either focal or rockford fosgate accompanied with a rockford fosgate amp. They are simply the best amp and their rms watts rating exceeds the rated number on the box.

      • Wooooah best amp? That's a huge call

        • LOL..i'm sure there are better ones out there but overall through my experience and budget, RF is the most consistent and best in terms of amplifying. Not a fan of their speaker though. Built is very mediocre compared to let say Focal.

      • Any particular Rockford amp and sub model?

        • This is very subjective according to you what wallet permits. For an amp for a sub, a mono block is preferable but you can get away with the 2 channel one in bridge mode. With RF, here are the tiers of their range, Prime = Entry, Punch = mid, Power = high end/powerful.
Their high-end amp is amazing. The size of less than a 7" tablet that can do various channel and power output is big.

        • @Volution:

Thanks. I will look into the RF range. My Focal speakers give out bass quite a lot actually . Maybe a tad more and then I would be truly satisfied.

I remember the first time I saw one of for sale for $100 at SCA.

the bubble burst so quickly once I realised how much it costs to fit.

    • add a subwoofer box - $80
    • add an amp (monoblock ideally) - $250
    • add a wiring kit (4 guage) - $80
    • add a headunit with RCA input, or line-out converters - $150
    • installation (if you choose to pay somoeone) - optional - $400 at least for a new head unit, amp and sub installed.

Ahh I miss spending money on car audio :(

  • I upvoted this purely for the Fat Pizza reference…

  • Price is now $55.30 if you want to update the post.

  • Can I buy this and install at the back of the car? What else is required?

    • You'd need a sub enclosure, an amp, wiring and time for install.

      • Thank you
