Is the 720p screen a downside?

    • +5

There's a 720p screen on the Nintendo Switch which is 6.0". Definitely not a downside. Higher resolution also means much weaker battery life.

      • Nice. Might get one but depends what sort of games. I've got an severely unused Vita somewhere.
What sort of RPGs can I play on this?

        • +6

All android games and emulators up to N64, PS1 and Dreamcast. Gamecube has also been shown, but whether it will reach good framerates is unknown so far. This video shows Gamecube being played on it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQm5r6U4zqA. Also your Vita has a lower resolution than 720p.

    • not with that size screen. it's only 5 inch, also it probably couldn't do higher resolution the fps will take a hit

Since this is mainly for emulators it's pretty perfect.

    • +1

No. It will be faster to play in lower res. The CPU is not exactly the strongest in this. Kinda wish they put in a flagship SD835 in there instead. That will run Dolphin Emu (Wii/GC) and PPSSPP at full speed.

  • Is this a real GPD or a knock off? Plus GPD 2 is out.

    • +6

It's a real GPD XD Plus. This is the android variant. GPD 2 is windows, is not out yet and costs $650USD.

      • I thought it's out, saw a lot of gamepley videos on YouTube, seems cool and powerful.

        • +3

Those are prototypes. It's on pre-order. Won't ship until May.

GPD is the company that makes a number of different handheld devices. You are referring to the GPDWin which is Windows based gaming and the GPDWin 2 is out to beta testers. They make the XD (this, Android based) and the GPD Pocket (smallest true Windows 10 notebook available on the market).

What's Android like on these? Weirdly customised, crapware loaded bug heap or is it mostly stock?

The MediaTek SoC is a bit of a bummer, makes porting much harder.

You can see it there. Custom roms are also made for these.

Was necessary to get 64bit support. I've seen the requirements for Qualcomm chipsets and they're crazy like the pricing. Thankfully this niche have a good Dev community which will releases tweaked ROMs.

  • These look great, I wish I could justify buying one. Anyway thanks for the deal OP.

    • +1

I totally can't justify buying this. But I can't resist. Retro roolz!

  • Awesome find!

I just cancelled my preorder with them and reorder again

  • "64bit N64 and SONY PS games"
    REALLY???

    • +1

Yes? I don't see the issue. It can emulate 64bit N64 games and also Sony PS1 Games.

      • Wow so just download all the rooms put in sd card and it will read them all? I used to emulate on pc long time ago but always need to find good emulators some work some not and play around with settings button etc so is this really user friendly and powerful?

        • +1

Yep stick them on and they'll work. You'll still need to map the buttons for most games.

        • I assume you havent touch android based retro emulation? It is much more convinient now than the windows based one. Hell even Hyperspin (that crazy complex front end) have an Android version and so does retroarch (multicore emulator) which pairs well with hyperspin.

  • "Closest price I could find was $209 on Gearbest, so this is a big discount. Ships after the 25th. Faster shipping was only an extra 90c for me (Australia Air expedited)"

    Um, that doesn't add up.

    • +1

How so? It might not be worded elegantly but what OP is trying to say is this:

The next cheapest one he can find is from Gearbest for USD$ 209
FastTech selling it for almost USD$30 cheaper
Ships after 25th of february when it launches (still preorder world wide)
Shipping is free if you are willing to add 5 more weeks to your 25th of feb launch date but you can add 90 cents usd to expedite the shipping (will still arrive after 25th of feb but instead of 5 weeks after it might be only 2 weeks after).

Now i have never heard of fastech before but the website I usually go to (obscure handheld) seems to vouch for them so there’s that

Now i have never heard of fastech

The people who started Dealextreme sold up in 2012 and started up Fasttech. They're a reliable crowd.

  • Is there any difference between the EU and US version beside the power plug?

    • +1

      No
