  • What is usenet?

    • +4

      It's like fightclub.

(are these guys any good? Would you use them as your main newsfeed or just secondary?)

      • oh… thanks…

      • These guys are good for netting all the main uses

      • blocks like this are usually better as secondary, and use something like an unlimited for your primary.

It's a place where you can read and exchange text discussion.

If you're lucky there might be a linux distro or two available.

    • First rule of usenet, you don't ask about it

I have been using these guys for a couple years now as a block account. I have never had any issues with DCMA within a few days of releases.

    Highly recommended.

    • Cheers, do their block accounts have an expiry date or just when the data runs out?

      • +1

        No use by date.

Yeah I use them as a backup block account. Really good server. No expiry on blocks either.

I don't know what this but Officer Barbrady told me to post it anyway: https://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/comments/7xbnfm/valentines_1…

    • EUR10 for 1000GB is crazy cheap! 900 days retention might be annoying for some, but this seems excellent as a secondary backup. Even their annual 30 mbit account is only EUR22.
Edit: Hmmm, looks like they've had this sort of offer quite frequently. Check their twitter feed, even as far back as Nov 2015.

Once you join up under the love18 coupon you should see another coupon in your account (happy18 - valid until Feb 16) which you can use to get an additional 1000GB for a total of 2000GB for EUR20, (~AU$31.42 at current mid-market rate).

      • So are the "news" hosted by each site all different or are they all share the same bunch of "news" (from the same sources)?

        • All the same, (subject to DMCA/Takedown requests), news feeds are distributed from one server to another until it propagates throughout the network.

Some servers restrict what they handle, eg. only handle text newsgroups or specific binary newsgroups, plus they vary in the amount of retention they have, (eg. 900, 1500, 3000 days, etc).

        • News providers have mostly the same content, but they differ with article retention periods and takedown notices.

        • thanks guys, so is there any way for me to "preview" the list of news they have without signing up free trial? it's just for me to get an idea of what they have…

        • @homersyd: https://www.freeusenetnews.com lists free news servers, whether one of the free ones hosts the newsgroup you're interested in is another matter.

        • @4wd: thanks will check it out tonight!
