Got one of these. Absolutely brilliant priced, premium product and excellent build quality.

I actually returned mine (I posted the deal last month).

It's a beautiful machine, solid build, awesome features. However, it was a bit of a splurge and some things annoyed me about it (coming from a Surface Pro 4). The hinge on the screen doesn't fold back very far, so if using on your lap it wasn't great. The battery life was nowhere near the quoted 16 hours(!?). I was getting a projected 4-5 hours out of mine, with just surfing and note-taking.

The funny thing is that a week later, our Lenovo Yoga is acting up, and I'm now second guessing whether I should buy one of these again.

About the battery life. I’m pretty sure Surface Book 1 battery life was quoted as being 10 hours? The Surface Book 2 is 17 hours.

Battery could’ve been a driver issue. Perhaps give it a second shot? Worst case, you return it again.

EDIT: I’m sorry. You were right. 16 hours for the Performance Base model. Odd you weren’t getting anywhere close to it.

    • I got one of these too last month. It was DOA, I had to use the manual switch to disconnect the screen and keyboard and reconnect to get it working. There's also a slight pin sized scratch on the back :/

Anyway, right now I'm getting a projection of 12 hrs with excel and edge open with batter saver mode on.

    • Yeah I have one of these first gen SB's (i5 + Nvidia), can't say I'm impressed by the quality.

Had the whole unit replaced by MS because the screen was becoming yellow-ish, and one of the pins inside the mini DisplayPort got bent. Most of the crashes/freezes issues have been sorted out by updates, but there are still times when it needs a hard power off :/

I assume newer generations of the Surface Book will mature in stability.

  • I am not able to apply The PAPERS code on this item.

    • Worked for me, have you used it before?

    8gb ram :/

    • The age of the model is reflected in the price. If you want more RAM, go buy the Surface Book 2 or something else.

      • my 3 year old dell xps came with 16gb

so tempting but as a mac user for 10 years it's so hard to go back

    • Never been a mac user, but as an ex windows user now Linux user, don't do it.

  • Looking for something to replace mine. It's good, just not enough RAM (PowerBI desktop is killing it).

    • How much ram does power bi need?

      • Depends on the size of your report and whether you are using DirectQuery or Import. 8GB just isn't enough for a developer machine. PowerBI and or Visual Studio will eat that pretty quickly. And if you want to fire up a virtual or run SQL server forget it.

        • Do you think 16gb is enough? or should i get 32gb?

  • A bit underpowered for the price imo. The price is a lot for 8gb 6th gen i7.
You could get something similar with newer gen i7.
But again Microsoft is like a new Apple.

true, but it has solid build quality, great screen (with touch), stylus pen (which i thought worked very nicely).

using it just put a smile on my face some days!

Why didn't you vote + then?
I'm more after the portability and performance. I think there are budget laptops with latest core priced about the same or cheaper. Some with raging reviews too.
They may not have build quality at the same level, but it's fine for me. In fact I appreciate it more if I can open it up and upgrade the ssd or ram.

        • Funny why do you ask about the vote first up?

I forgot I guess, have voted now..

        • @theeps:I think if it is a good deal more people voting on it would help others to realise that it is.

  • great solid build and premium laptop, loved it. had one a while back and the little one spilled something on it - luckily i had accident protection, however they seemed to think it was cheaper to pay me out than replace/give me a new one.

so now i am returning for more.

however…. i can't add it to my cart for some reason?

  • That is a TRS please?
    Thanks in anticipation.
    N

    • The Tourist Refund Scheme will allow eligible purchases to claim GST back when departing the country.

Your receipt from Microsoft will have to show GST so that part should be eligible.

The TRS refunded amount will be the total price divided by eleven. To find the total cost to you excluding GST, divide the total cost by eleven then multiple by ten.

      • Thank you for your detailed, helpful answer. Appreciated.

I had one in my cart earlier, now it's gone. Must be out of stock or de-listed.

    • They added more stock

  • Can someone confirm the CPU on this one? Is it an i7 -XXXXU processor or a non-U?

  • Got one, Now Can anyone suggest how do we claim a TRS?

      Flying overseas helps

      • So i would be travelling overseas for a holiday on march 22 ,will i be able to claim it then at the airport?.

      • You can also swim, take a mini sub or take a rocket.

  • Was really hoping to find a cobalt blue surface laptop on sale somewhere. 256gb 8gb ram. Any thoughts?

    • Unlikely. The Surface laptop is their current model. These Surface Books have been superseded by the Surface Book 2.

  • If i claim it under student expenses, how much could i get back?

  • Is the Performance Base ones with the nVidia GPU? On the Microsoft website it says optional, but in the specs it lists it as included. On the eBay listing it doesn't mention it.

    Thanks for the heads up, got one for my daughter for Uni. Her alternate choice was the Dell XPS 13 {touchscreen , 8th gen etc @ $2899!}

  • Geez I was going to pull the trigger this morning but didn't realised it was expiring today :(

    • You should have done it earlier! Microsoft has a good return policy if you regret it :)
