  • Case only - for those with an existing drive they can use;

There is also a couple of comments on the above link about how to use standard 2.5" SATA drives, for those interested.

  • So will MS's firmware block the use of non MS sourced HDDs?

    • yes

every firmware from the last year or so bans non Microsoft official HDDs

would be fine in an older jtagged system though

      • I can't find any mention of this, do you have a source? All documentation I've found points out to being able to use almost any of the WD 2.5" drives, with a custom firmware on the drive.

      • I'm using a custom 120gb hdd in my xbox 360 slim right now. This is one i bought myself and customized for 360 use a week ago or so.

You are likely referring to the "datel", i believe, memory cards that were released and subsequently blocked by firmware updates.

Here's my source. Include one next time.

      • No mine has been fine.

      • @tonyjzx:
While I dont doubt that M$ could block any console with these HDD's

Im running an arcade with a 250gb WD blue formatted/prepared to 160gb perfectly fine.
(I did it before the 250's were out)

Bought the casing from DX and HDD from local supplier, prepared perfectly fine.

        BUT!
I do believe that they could block me at any time….

  • +1

$30 dollars more and you can get the official Microsoft 250GB from COTD without all the hassles of future firmware updates…

    No brainer for me.

    • Is the cotd one a slim??

      • Nope. But you can use the HDD in the slim without any issues, you just have to remove it from the "fat" casing.

You could grab the case only from DX in my link above if you don't like leaving it flailing around in the case - or just use some cardboard and electrical tape to make it a bit more snug.

        • have grabbed one of these 250gb slims…see how that goes

  • At the moment if you are really interested in saving money, i would recommend buying a case, and setting up your own hdd. Google hddhackr. We have no clue what hdd is inside this case. It may be better or worse in terms of speed, write cache, etc than official ones.

  • are the same internal HDDs as the official MS ones available to buy seperately?

buy the same HDD & one of these casings a better deal then MS's retail one?

  • I'm using a WD drive from nearly 2 years ago and it's still fine .

  • I don't recommend one of these hdd from china. I bought one and it died a few months after used. Open up the casing and found old refurbished hdd inside. Lost heaps of my save game files. I have an old 20gb hdd from launch and still kicking. You're better off buying the hdd from cotd for $78
