  • Is this the 2017 model or the old model?
    Does it have 4G speeds?

    • +6

This is the 3G model, has 850/900mhz 3G.

4G model is VoLTE and currently only for China.

  • can i use whats app on this phone?

    Available online as well.

I was bang on with my prediction on 20/12/2017 - Ok then - By end of Feb 2018 it will be $29.50.

    • +9

Will you make another prediction, oh wise one?

      • +21

Ok, I predict that my next deal post will be on watches.

        • +13

          I salute the Prophet WatchNerd.

        • +11

I predict WatchNerd will ask if there's a notification LED.

        • +10

          It doesn't, I already asked on 30/10/2017.

        • +4

          @WatchNerd: Of course you did.

    • Can you predict when Trump will "leave us"?

          Someone obviously likes him.

          2024? UGH!

        • +3

@whodidthat: There was no emotion in my prediction, emotion only causes confusion.

    • +3

Plot-twist: WatchNerd is actually the Nokia CEO

    • +5

Looks like you were off by 50c actually

      • +3

        Exactly.

"bang on" would be an exact prediction, this is 50 cents out, however you save another fitty cen (Russell Peters)

  • +1

    Can it be unlocked?

    • +2

If you wait 6 months it will cost $25 with Vodafone credit.

Other options exist on eBay for a similar amount without the 6 month wait.

      • ebay unlock price is? thanks

        • $35, best to spend a bit more and buy it unlocked

      • Wha if you don't wait? 50?

    • For new mobile it's $50…found some one @ CjwKCAiAt8TUBRAKEiwAOI9pAEXaCkDo1jFNhSVMeCbkzrUXeAD0rxHM37Q59FXA7dpZJJ6Vpi4rwRoC_EsQAvD_BwE at A$6.50

  • +6

Geez this is cheap considering unlocked RRP is $89

    • +6

      Hi Kerfuffle, I like you.

  • +4

    PSA same as last time

YES, these CAN play the old school JAR file games.
YES, you can connect and make 3G calls, including what few WAP sites are still up.
YES, you can access Facebook and shit through the mobile site, or even the old school app.

Unfortunately, Vodafone killed their support of 0.facebook.com (the free text based version) about two weeks ago. I had been using it on this since December when I got mine and it's a proper good blast from the past. Here's hoping they turn it back on some time.

    • +5

Don't you buy this type of phone to avoid Facebook?

      • +1

I'm not too into Facebook, but if there's one thing I want to get away from, it's Messenger.

I get by using the mobile website on Android, but they will inevitably eventually block it like they tried to countless times.

Old school WAP Facey is ideal for me. I can see the news feed if I want, I can shoot off a quick message, do all that shit, but I don't need 100 apps, not to mention when I did try Messenger half the time I'd have to wait ages for messages to send (quite often only to have them not send anyway), and barely any games would make it past the 90% mark.

  • +1

Is there a long credit expiry option?

    • +3

They have one that lasts a year, that's what I'm on with the Voda sim. Perfect if you just wanna have a phone ready to go whenever you need, charge it up, turn it off, leave it in the drawers or whatever and bust it out in an emergency.

      • WARNING:

Find someone with a Dymo labeller etc!

If you DO intend to keep a phone like this around in an emergency, print out the mobile phone number attached to the handset AND STICK IT ON THE BACK!!!

Even though they are meant to be able to detect what number you are calling from, it doesn't hurt to be able to give a contact number out in certain situations :)

I can almost guarantee that if you buy it and use it 10 months later you'll of forgotten the number!

    • I activated it and it went on a 365 day plan for $10. Not bad.

  • +3

Does it work on kogan or lebara without unlocking?
    Any one tried?

  • -3

Rewind 10 years when there was no 3G, only GSM- IIRC this was the ugliest phone with the most horribly cheap keys/interface.

I wouldn't have paid $29 for it back then. It's only redeeming quality was that it worked effectively. Getting contacts in and out was a challenge as they tried to sell the connection software as an expensive add-on- especially once their market was moving to smart phones.

Still don't see why this is the Nokia they chose to revive and retail at $89. Let alone sim-lock to sell cheaper? What's with this model? The cache of owning a clone of one of the phones that sent Nokia to the wall?

Anyway, in a few months, it'll be $20.00: The price in China is probably less than that already. After all you can choose to buy a fake version there which is probably better quality than the original and the copy, (and the new fakes are available with 4G radios, amongst many other actual improvements)

    • +4

People like the idea of a phone that only requires charging once a week and can be dropped or driven over without instantly becoming landfill .
The idea will seem like a bad one once you actually start using it .
Great for kids school bags but I'm not sure of Vodaphone long recharge options .

      • I agree with the first sentence, which is why it's such a pity this mediocre example of a feature phone is what got added to the existing pile of mediocre options. Mine's been demoted from secondary phone to spare phone, because it's such a displeasure to use.

    • +1

It's targeted to a market, particularly the older generation who just want a simple phone. That's all…

That being said, $79 is still a rort! If you are lucky enough to find one at Woolies for $29 with $10 credit… now THAT'S worth it!

  • -2

Seems to Ben good price , but what can I do with it besides playing snake game?

    • +6

As long as Ben is happy then it's all good.

    • +2

Install literally thousands of other, better, JAR based games.

The Game Boy / Color emulator and various Guitar Heros will keep me coming back to this phone for years.

      • Oh, can install more games? Hmm interesting

        • +4

On mine, off the top of my head I've got

          Bourne Conspiracy
          Doom RPG
Duke Nukem Arena (obviously, look at my (profanity) name)
Sonic 1 (split into two games and with new MIDI soundtrack, but proper Genesis game)
          Family Guy
          Spider-Man 3
          Tony Hawk Proving Ground
Paris Hilton's Diamond Quest ((profanity) you, it's better than Bejewelled)
Guitar Hero 3, World Tour, 5, Warriors of Rock, and some "backstage pass" games
MeBoy (the aforementioned Game Boy / Color emulator. No sound on it mind you)
          Yahtzee
          Platinum Sudoku
          Saint's Row 2
Grand Theft Auto 5 (just a mod of Saints Row 2 to have GTA esque HUDs and shit)

And a bunch more. Some good stuff. I'm not a Pokemon guy, hell, I don't like the series at all really, but I tried out Silver on the GBC emu as I used to have it years back and I dumped a good 5 hours into the thing before getting bored. Runs great.

  • No full HD or NFC is a deal breaker for me.

    • +1

And no band 28, how rogue

    • And no WiFi!

      • Really? All the old flagship Nokia's had WiFi, am I just better off dusting off the n95?

        • Definitely no WiFi. I have one. This isn't a flagship phone, it's a feature phone with not many features

    • No Qi wireless charging. :(

It does have a headphone jack, microsd card, fm radio and removable battery.

    • No OLED. I'm out.

  • I want to put a phone in a car that can be used as a GPS tracker and this seems perfect. Is this the best option?

    • @2jzzzz - Give this deal a look over - might be better value for the handset provided you are happy with Telstra to be the carrier https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/363037

      • But battery and durability of Nokia.

    • Does it even have a GPS chip?

  • -1

    burner

Also note that $40 and $50 Vodafone Starter kits are half price.

  • Any long expiry offer on Vodafone? How long does the $10 last if I used it mostly to receive calls?

  • From the 43 votes how many of you will actually buy one?

    • I already have one.

      • Do you use it to make calls as your only phone?

        • No because I didn't buy it to use as my main phone

        • Just curious if anyone would use it as their main phone.

        • @abacus:

I did and went totally crazy.

    • Considering…but unlikely…

  • Thanks OzBargain. I just picked one of these up at the Woolworths in Casey. I was after a spare phone for emergencies that I could also load up with music for listening to offline.

    Nice.

  • Anyone have any idea how to search which stores have them in stock? When I go to the website, it says not available at your store before I even pick a store. I called Woolworths but they don't even have it listed as stock in any store anywhere. Anyone see it in Sydney? Thanks for any help.

    • From what I can tell from the Woolworths website, it seems to be in stock at Sydney Metcentre & Town Hall Sydney CBD, so if you change your store location the website should update with stock availability.
The special ends today according to the dates in the photo, so keep that in mind.

      • Thank You!

        • Sorry, I made a mistake, none at Metcentre, but it’s also available at Balmain, Haymarket & Potts Point.

        • @headphonejack: Thank you again!

        • @headphonejack: I tried calling all three at 7:40pm and all out :(

        • @jace88: Sorry about that. I guess they need to update their online inventory.

  • It has Bluetooth… can u pair Bluetooth headphones to it and listen to music?

  • This phone only exists in the smartphone era because it is popular with Indian women - google it and have a laugh…

    • For some reason the reboot looks 'cheap' even in grey. I miss the 'titanium' phones (and secretly wish I could have owned one at some point in my life).

  • +1

Found one in stock at Marrickville Metro last night and got it :) Tried at least a dozen stores before this and none had anything.

  • +1

Lo and behold, it's back up to full price ($79), and suddenly the local Woolies I checked had at least 5 in stock.

(note: Very well could've been 10+, I could only peek inside when the staff member opened the cabinet below the display in Westfield Parramatta)

    • Oh damn! I've been there.

Once I was at Harvey Norman and they claimed that they didn't have a Vodafone pocket WiFi.

I pointed to their shelves they had it, The guy claimed it was a different SKU despite it saying Vodafone R206 on it. He claimed it was different and they all "ugh look so similar…"
