Not a great controller imo, you're better off paying the extra coin for a pro controller. I have both and this cover doesn't get a look in.

    • On the contrary I use this controller as my go to for any 2d games on Switch. SteamWolrd Dig 2, Sonic Mania, Slime San and Earth Wars all work great with this thing. My only issue is that the "home" button is in an annoying position as I always bump it when playing

Yeah I don't play many 2D games, I bought it for SF2 but found the DPad wasn't good.

    • +1

Pro controller has the worst dpad in existence.

      • It isn't good but I find this one is worse.

You may have a dud unit because myself and basically everyone else who has talked about it loves it

  • Great for switch. Have two of these that we use for Mario Kart when friends come over. Paid $39 on ebay for overseas stock though.

For what its worth they were $36 at EB in Jan.

    • I should have purchased then. Shame I wasn't looking!

      • You may have missed since it wasn't posted as a deal. Just a comment in the Steam controller deal from EB Games back in mid January.

They had the FC30 Pro, NES30 Pro & SFC30 8Bitdo controllers for $36 Managed to pickup 2 pro controllers. 1 of each NES and SF design at the tume.

I have two of these and they are great for the Mi Box (android games and emulators) and for the odd Steam arcade game. Better off getting from Aliexpress/Ebay for around $30 (maybe cheaper with ebay codes).

    • That's what I'm using it for… I tight about getting it from aliexpress and weighted up the 1 month postage with instant gratification.

      • Oh sorry I have the SNES versions. Not so sure how good the NES ones are but the SNES ones are fit for purpose.

If I have one complaint it is that the D-Pad rubber is a bit hard. But this can probably be modded very easily.

        • This one seems good so far. After a bit of gaming I may have a different opinion though. Still… I'm happy enough.

  • Please be aware there is a much better version (SF30 Pro ) that includes rumble, motion controls and better shoulder buttons.

    • There are some great models. This is good for emulation. The 8bitdo website has newer greater better pads.

  • Anything similar to play N64 on a laptop? Or would this do the job?

    • This would be fine, I just set the 'c' buttons to the right analogue, Z on the shoulder etc.

This looks epic, love that the analogue have the hexagonal analogue stick shroud.
Kickstarter is done unfortunately, as they were quite cheap. But you can preorder http://retrofighters.com/

N64 has allways been the least pleasing experience for me with emulation due to the type of tech behind the analogue stick and the layout in general. On the surface that looks like a great re-imagining.

  • I don't understand why this controller even exists since it offers no genuine experience or aesthetics of what it trying to replicate.. the skinning of a nes, on the shape of a snes.. just why? I'd happily buy a nes shaped nes controller with nes buttons, but not this frankentroller.

Shame they don't stock the SF30 pro. I did however get the regular SF30 (the bluetooth model though) and it's fantastic, just like using the original.

    • Fair comment. I like this for the portability and flexibility to play a range of emulated games. I've had a few yum cha controllers from ebay and ali exoress but they don't have qc and lag. To each his/her own, I guess.

    • Well it's pretty far off a SNES too with the dual sticks and twin shoulder buttons. Guess it's just going for that retro look but adding enough controller options so that it can cater for games across most consoles.

It's probably aimed at the retropie crowd that have everything from a NES up to a N64 set up on it and where those people want to use a single controller across all those systems. That and they work on modern consoles so for those same peope can be a cheap way to add a few extra controllers to a modern system if buying the first party controllers not a priority. They're fairly versatile in that regard.

      • Exactly. Well put.

  • I bought mine from EB a couple weeks back for 36, what the shit?

It's alright on Switch, and it's alright for emulators on your phone, but for native games, it reverses A and B, X and Y and it's real weird. Playing San Andreas where circle is sprint, cross is shoot, square is in and out of cars, and triangle is jump, it's just (profanity) weird.

    • Funny how prices fluctuate. Kinda shirty I didn't look a few weeks back. Odd about the controls. This is meant to be compatable with the switch.

      • It does work with the Switch but the setup was a bitch, at least for me. Had to look up online how to do it, and I've since forgot, so if I ever want to use it on the NS I'll have to Google it again.

        • I was told bo EB staff when I pruchased back in January that these no longer work with switch.

Don't own a switch but look ed these up. From what I can tell Switch firmware v4.0 had problems with these controllers. The latest v4.1 firmware seems to fix this.

Also these no longer work with IOS on latest firmware. However you can downgrade to v2.0 firmware from 8bitdo site and they will work fine on IOS devices.

        • @g12345567: Worked perfect on my Switch a few weeks ago, and it was running the latest firmware on both the system and controller.

Worked completely fine. Checked the joysticks and everything in that little calibration menu, all was fine. As far as I know, there's not yet been another Switch update, so in theory it should work fine now.

But yeah, I bought mine partly for the compatibility there, but also because I got a new phone and my old Bluetooth controller's joystick was dying so I more needed a phone controller, but in a pinch, it doubling as another Switch controller was the tipping point to purchase.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: yeah worked for me in Jan. setup as stated was a drag.

$36 was during a different one week “managers” sale. Still on sale now but the price isn’t as good as last time.

  • I got one for visitors to use on Switch with Mario Kart and works great on and off however keeps unregistering and now won't reconnect. Unreliable especially when you have a screaming 6 year old desperate to play (although is great for his little hands)

  • +1

I got the 8bitdo SFC30 yesterday for SNES gaming on my celeron Intel N3450 laptop. TY OP.

    • My pleasure.
