Edifier S550 5.1 Computer Speakers $250 shipped on ebay

100

Hi guys,

I thought this might make a nice consolation prize for anybody who has missed out on the latest round of discounted Logitech Z-5500 speakers! These are reputedly of higher build quality than the Z-5500's and by all accounts they acoustically surpass Logitech's offering for all around performance including music reproduction despite a lower power rating. Here's a link to a translated but comprehensive review:

Cheapest on Staticice is $339 plus shipping! ;)

Anyway, I know it says 10+ available, so I don't know exactly how many they have…but it's a good price so do with it as you may…the seller doesn't have a lot of pedigree but it's all positive, including some sales of these; but read the feedback and make up your own mind! Enjoy! :)

Here's the copy/paste of the ebay blurb, which looks like it was just taken from the manufacturer anyway:

    hmm.. no digital inputs..
    only analog 5.1/2.0 input..

    no dolby digital/dts decoding..

    that's a shame..

  • They look uncannily similar to the z-5500's

i really don't know which part of this looks like a logitech? MDF vs Plastic? dual drivers (with tweeter) vs single driver???

Personally i think these look like a better product.

this is a good deal and product preference shouldn't detract from that.

      lol not at all…

and as a lot of others have pointed out.. no digital inputs = no go.

  • man where was this two weeks ago when i bought my z5500's.
    Tempted by this.

  • I've had a Z5500D system for ages now. I'd still choose that over this one. This looks like it'd only do proper 5.1 with a 6 Channel direct output source. Like on equipped PCs that have a 2ch front, 2ch rear, centre/sub outputs. Can't connect the Xbox360/PS2 directly to this in 5.1ch without the use of a seperate amplifier (or optical to 6ch adaptor if such a thing exists) maybe but thats another cost.

    • Can’t connect the Xbox360/PS2 directly to this in 5.1ch

True. I have heard a rumour that very few if any console games (the SW, not the HW) actually use anything more than 2.0ch audio. As I say, this is only a rumour I've heard, I don't have either console so I don't actually know, so I'm happy for someone who does to refute this…but yeah, if you wanna connect a console by HDMI/Optical then this system isn't for you! ;)

or optical to 6ch adaptor if such a thing exists

The couple that do exist are wildly expensive, like over $500, so not feasible at all for this purpose sadly. A cheap amp would defo be your best bet, but as you rightly state, additional cost, so ultimately pointless unless you already had such an amp! ;)

      • Yes possibly. Like VHS movies or PlayStation1 games that had the Dolby Surround video playing when loading heh. Although Xbox360 & PS3 do also play DVD/Bluray movies though so thats another thing to consider.

Still happy with my Z5500, it's an old system now though. Came out in like 2004 I think? When I got mine it was only used for my PC which did have 6ch output. I used the PC as an all in one machine for DVD movies, music player/theatre PC & a HD Digital TV tuner card. 32" LCD TV connected up as the primary display monitor. PC died after about 6 years of almost 24/7 service (blown capacitor/s on the motherboard I think). Moved to using a laptop computer instead. Bought a set-top box HD TV tuner which is now connected to the Z5500D via digital coaxial & the Xbox360 via optical. Something I wouldn't of been able to do had I bought a system like the Edifier to begin with.

Plus the electricity bill has certainly come down a bit since the PC died haha.

        • You know what's scary…I found a product that Creative labs used to make called the DDTS-100 which sold for ~$130 & offered the ability to interface numerous devices using digital or optical out to analogue surround devices like this! Guess what, discontinued…thanks a bunch Creative! :p

        • +1

maybe Logitech can make a DDTS-100 equivalent for people to use with the Edifier?? Haha..

        • LOL! :)

Heh, the "comprehensive review" is incredibly superficial and conducted by the website edifier.com.ua.

    • How's about you find us a better one tantryl? I just grabbed one that I thought offered a decent overview, with the guts of both revealed side by side, and a nice simple spectrographic analysis of the frequency range.

I found you guys a decent price, I reckon it's not unreasonable for you to do your own due diligence…hey, no skin off my nose either way, I stand to gain nothing out of this posting, just trying to put back into the OzB community!

      • Whoa, where'd that come from?

As I'm sure you're aware, this is Edifier Ukraine website is the only review that man or google can find.

        • Frankly tantryl, as is often the case, your first comment was cryptic and unconstructive at best! If you have some pertinent detail to add, by all means go right ahead, I'd be glad to hear it; but your initial comment offered nothing!

As stated, I noticed some interest in these in the last z5500 thread with a price of $339 plus shipping; and for the benefit of those people or any other interested OzBargainers; not myself; when I serendipitously ran across them for $90 less, shipped, I thought I'd share. I kinda thought that might be in the spirit of OzB! I honestly don't care what you think of the product or 'bargain' per se, but I actually don't consider an ambiguous whinge to be valuable input into the community.

Anyway, your google's clearly busted mate, plenty of youtube reviews, plenty of comments from regulars on various forums including WP, and even the odd couple of reviews on pages still floating around out there if you care to look…one from Gameheads Unwired comes to mind…just to say nobody can find them is a bit of a cop out!

        • I haven't even commented on the deal… I've only commented on the review.

EDIT Gameheads Unwired Edifier - huh?

EDIT2 Like I said "Whoa, where did that come from?". You've read all sorts of weird stuff into a simple post.

        • Not trying to be argumentative, but honestly, why bother to comment on the review then if you have nothing to add with regard to the deal itself? Again, that was what made it fairly unconstructive in it's ambiguity! Had you come out with something like "sketchy review because…so I wouldn't buy them because…etc", then we wouldn't be having this discussion!

          Edit 1
You don't get everything handed to you on a silver platter when it comes to searching the internet tantryl, even from google…you need to think and search a little laterally sometimes, a linear search won't always cut the mustard! Like I said, check some of the forums, (hint) you might find more than you think! ;)

          Edit 2
And like I said, your initial comment was fairly cryptic with regard to intent…especially as you admit, without partisanship or comment with regard to the deal itself…that's the inherent problem of ambiguity mate…surely you get that! Simple post indeed! Not hard to read/misread/infer a lot when negligible contextual detail is given.

Anyway, it's all harmless in the big scheme of things, we've both devoted enough time to this misunderstanding…have a good weekend dude! :)

        • +1

You have a good weekend too, mate.

"nice consolation prize" more like first prize. These speakers are vastly superior to the z5500
    http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=…

  • might be better sounding with better speakers (tweeters) & sub
but lack of digital inputs/decoder … makes it a non-contender for budget HT needs

  • thats a nice price. From the reviews & pics Ive seen they are certainly better built than the z5500 & have better "upper end"

heres a link to Edifier North America web page for s550

In one of the reviews it mentioned that there also is a digital version S550D
Hey StewBalls, can you get your hands on any Edifier S550D?

    • Sorry dude, I'm not affilitated with the seller in any way…so this is all I really looked at, you could contact them and ask if they can get others I suppose. :)

I got interested in these after reading about them in the z-5500 threads & read some reviews, then when I saw them at that price I thought I'd share for those seeking slightly better sound in a 5.1 system & willing to forego digital input/decoding. ;)

      • my mistake… I thought you were the seller… sorry :)

        • Not a prob dude; don't worry, I'd gladly take your money though! Cheers! :)

  • To those who bought the speakers off this person, have you received the item? If so how did you receive it, and in particular who was the courier?
