  • Is the idea that you go in and get the phone plan first at JB or Telstra store - and then apply for the $10 extra discount + 5gb extra data through online chat or over the phone? Or can you do the whole thing all at once?

    Thanks in advance.

    • get the plan first

  • +1

Great deal, thanks! Got it today at JB. Also got 3GB bonus data and a $10 discount on first attempt in online chat. When asked why it's not 5GB, the rep told me "As your plan is special offer so it is eligible for 3 Gb bonus data"; I was happy to take it.

Wife and I picked up 2 of the pixel 2 xl, home mini and headphones from JB @ Carseldine Brissy this arvo. Have had a crack at getting the $10 discount 3 times now using online chat but have been knocked back on each occasion, getting different answers every time though. Was told I had an ineligible plan, that it can't be applied after signing up to plan and even told that the porting discount finished on 29th March… definitely have to get lucky with the rep you're chatting to - might have a few more goes tomorrow. But seriously it's still a great deal (just nice to get that bit extra isn't it lol) and the phone is verrry noice, sweet upgrade from an aging Note 4. Thanks OP!

I got the deal on chat for $49, told to go onto store and show them the transcript. I can email you the transcript if you ask :)

    • Hi there can you email me a transcript as I'm planning to ask tomorrow. Would you mind allowing for PM?

    • Sure ,if you would please. Been treated like rubbish by Telstra

    • i got another transcript if you want a trap card handy

      • Hey could you PM me the transcript please? :)

        • pm me your email

        • @TarquinOliverNimrod: sent via pm

        • Can you please email me the transcript please, Been trying to get this discount but no luck

      • Hey mate could I grab the transcript off you as well? Been having no luck with the online reps - will keep trying in the meantime.

If you can PM me your email address then I can get in touch with you - just made this account so I can't PM.

        Would appreciate it a lot.

        Thanks.

        • +2

Try speaking with billing rather than sales. Get a rock solid assurance from them in writing that you will get the credit once you have signed up. Then go back to them and get the credit applied

        • @sandman87: Got it. Will try that. Thanks mate - just don't want to sign up before I know I can get the discount for sure

        • @John Kimble: Didn't realise - that's a bummer. Thanks John.

        • @cchu8: check the link I provided

        • @John Kimble: I did indeed - dropbox link does not appear valid, or perhaps there is a fault on my end?

        • +1

@cchu8: oh he's deleted the file. Sorry was there the other day.

Anyway, yeah just say billing query and ask for a $10 discount. Worked for me first go but YMMV.

      • I am also not having much luck getting the $10 discount. Can you PM me the transcript please? :-)

        • You fail. Read the above comments.

      • Hi mate may I have a copy of transcript as well please? many thx, have pm my email to you via pm.:)

      • sorry mate, I got this account yesterday so unable to sent the message……but already open my message

    • Pm me with your email address! :)

      • You need to turn messaging on.

        • Sorry! Done!

    • Could you PM me too please? :)

    • Can you pm me too, thanks

  • Got $10 off from the first attempt. Quick and easy. Then asked for bonus 5GB data. The consultant said either $10 off or 5GB. Gonna try another one for 5GB :).

    • can you pm me your transcript please? Tried 6 times already and it's basically the same each time "only valid for $99 plans and above".

      • Sorry, don't have the transcript. Basically said that my friend got the same deal and asked if I can also get the same. Worked the very first time. Hope this helps.

        • was this done today? either they've caught on or I have to keep trying.

        • @anthoneeyz:
          Today mate

        • @anthoneeyz: yes, couple hours ago.

Picked one up from JB today with the mini and headphones, after porting to Optus 2 weeks ago.

  • +6

Ok doing emails got too hard. I got this deal today for $49/month, you have to go into the store, show them this transcript and they will process it in store as $59/month and at the end they will leave a note saying they've sighted the transcript, then you call telstra billing and they will change it to $49/month. This is for either the pixel 2, or the 2 XL, whatever you prefer, as well as the google home mini and the earphones.

I've put the transcript into a word doc and uploaded it to my dropbox.

    Enjoy people! :)

Thanks for the PM. (Edit, speech to text is rubbish)

However, i think the direct dropbox above might hurt you if Telstra are checking out this thread. Perhaps edit?

After a few attempts, finally got the $10 discount (and the 5gb) - recommend going directly to the billing team! They didn't ask a single question. Thanks for the tips all.

    • +1

+1 for the billing team advice Pacman! As per my post above tried 4 times last night to get discount applied (using chat initiated from the mobile sales section of website) and got shut down every time. Called Telstra today, was getting nowhere but stuck to my guns and rep finally caved and gave me 5gb of data on one of the two numbers I ported in. Was pretty happy with that result and thought I'd give any further haggling a miss until I saw your comment… went to the billing section of their website, started up a chat from there and got the $10 credit applied to both numbers no questions asked. Nice, cheers again Pacman and everyone else for the tips!

    • +1

Thanks for the great advice and to all the others who contributed to the discussion on how to obtain a further $10 discount. What a great community to be a part of!

      • I agree. Just spent some time on telstra chat and they applied $10 discount without any issues. Have a reference number in case of issues. Very happy.

      • +3

What an amazing deal OP! I thought it was awesome at $59, now it's $49 with 20GB, incredible!

  • Just tried billing team, chatted with Priyanka, he/she confirmed that $59 BYO plan is not eligible for further discount. Even $10 off applied, it will get canceled after 24 hours

    • Just was successful with Priyanka, all I had to do is show the transcript, try again!

      • also talked to Priyanka today and he said will apply to $10 off on port in too. Do not have any proof that it has gone through yet though, so will have to see in the next bill.

      • +1

did you actually have the discount applied? I just saw my bill and no discount was applied. Priyanka is such a troll

  • I can second what pacman21 said - talked to the billing team, they asked for evidence and I pasted the transcript from Littlebob86's comment. They agreed to give the $10 discount and 5gb without much of a hassle. Thanks guys!

  • +1

I've just tried the billing team and the consultant knows about this discount very well. She said that many have been inquiring about the discount and the matter has already escalated and being monitored. She said the discount will be taken off if you worked out to be ineligible. I'm already skeptical about trying because it's just too good to be a true deal and clearly is a mistake considering the value of this phone when bought outright.

    • +2

UH OH. Tried again and ended up with Priyanka giving me the discount. Still have my doubts though! Priyanka will get in trouble for sure. hahahaha

  • +4

In response to the Ozbarginers that have said Telstra informed them that they are looking into the port in discount being applied incorrectly and may remove it from ineligible accounts, this is an excerpt from the ACCC website -

Businesses are not allowed to make statements that are incorrect or likely to create a false impression.

This rule applies to their advertising, their product packaging, and any information provided to you by their staff or online shopping services. It also applies to any statements made by businesses in the media or online, such as testimonials on their websites or social media pages.

    https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/misleading-claims-advertis…

Now I may be misinterpreting this statement (if someone has more intimate knowledge of the ACCC rules/ACL please comment :) ) but I believe that Telstra WILL NOT be able to take this discount off customers that have had it applied to their account, especially those who received the discount at the time of signing up to the contract. I know I will be complaining if they try and take it off me!

    • I'm pretty sure they can. Happens all the time with their internet contracts.

      • +1

Oh yeah don't get me wrong I'm sure that they (and plenty of other telcos) do dodgy stuff like backtracking on promised discounts etc all the time but whether they are ALLOWED to do this under the ACCC rules/ACL is the question. The people that have signed up for this plan after being told by a Telstra rep that it will cost them $49 p/m have entered into a contractual agreement based on information that IMO should be taken as the truth, if a rep has made a mistake well that is just poor training and essentially they have misled the customer. If it wasn't for that extra $10 discount maybe they wouldn't have signed up because it wasn't financially viable? I know we're only talking $10 a month but who knows. I think customers that have had the discount applied AFTER signing up (the situation I'm in) may not be in as strong of a position but the way I see it is it should be available to ALL customers signing up, irrespective of when it was applied. If Telstra does try and reneg on me I will be referring to ACCC rules/ACL when talking to them because demonstrating a knowledge of this will go a long way. Sorry for the long post everyone haha

So after following this thread for many weeks now i finally picked up the bundle from signing up at JB Hifi in Garden City WA on Sunday afternoon.

Got home and asked for the $10/month discount and the 5gb and got told only could get the extra 5gb/month and had to call through to attempt to get the $10/month off.

Tried again maybe 20 minutes later with online chat and got the $10/month discount first go. I just said I heard there was a 10/month discount for new ports from other networks and didnt mention anything else.

I purchased this deal (Pixel 2 XL 64GB on the $59 BYO Telstra plan) from JB HiFi in Bundaberg yesterday. It came with the Google Home Mini and the bonus headphones. 2 hours later I posted the following into the Telstra 24x7 chat (as suggested above),

"Hi, I recently ported into Telstra from Virgin and I heard there's a $10 discount for people who port to Telstra. My friend who ported in with me was offered a $10 discount after chatting to online telstra chat."

I was successful and was immediately given the $10 discount.

Today I again went onto the Telstra 24x7 chat and posted,

"Hi, I recently ported into Telstra from Virgin and I heard there's a 5GB bonus data offer for people who port to Telstra. My friend who ported in with me was offered 5GB of bonus data after chatting to online telstra chat."

Again, I was immediately successful in getting the 5 GB bonus data.

What an amazing deal! $49 per month for a 64GB Pixel 2 XL with unlimited phone & SMS and 20 GB of data each month. Amazing!!! :)

    • +1

Nice one! Has the discount appeared in your Telstra app yet? I was advised that it would appear in both the app and the bills I receive, nothing coming up in the app for me yet though… but in saying that it was only applied last night. Going back through this discussion it looks like a few customers were advised that the discount had been applied to their account only to receive their first bill and it was for $59. Sounds like it wasnt applied correctly in the first place but after contacting Telstra they got it sorted no probs and were advised a credit would be applied to the next bill to correct it. It would be nice to have it all sorted prior to that occuring.

      • +1

The discount isn't showing up in the app and I won't receive my first bill for another 6 days. In any case I have been given confirmation numbers both times and will press the issue if it hasn't been applied correctly. I'm with Telstra for my home broadband and they massively stuffed that up during setup but I was given two months free access and a $10 discount for the life of the contract so I've had good experiences of them fixing things when they stuff them up. Honestly, I thought it was a bargain for $59 a month and 15 GB of data but $49 and 20 GB is incredible :)

        • Thanks for the info! Spoke to them again tonight in chat and tried to get email confirmation like Staryknight did but they would only confirm that it had been applied correctly by the rep last night and that my confirmation number was all I needed to prove it was applied. Also indicated that the app wouldn't be updated until a later date. I guess only time will tell. And yes it is an awesome deal! :)

    • +1

Thank you very much! I just bought one and used the same chat as you did. I got the $10 off credit straight away. However it took 2 tries to get the extra 5GB data. All done now though. Such a good deal

      • That's awesome! I can't take all the credit, I borrowed the script from glowstix047 on the previous page and just modified it for the 5 GB bonus script. Super stoked that it seemed to work so easily :)

  • +2

Signed up to this plan today.

Got the pixel, google home mini and the earphones for $59/month.

I then contacted telstra livechat to enquire about the $10 port in discount and they referred me to contact their credit maangement team and eventually got the $10 off per month.

Good deal! Essentially only paying about $7 per month for the plan if I manage to sell the phone off for $1000.

    • Hey,
I was curious to know - what happens to your plan once you sell the phone? Do you buy another phone and use the same plan on it?
      Thanks!

      • Probably. 64gb capacity is too little for me. Might get the 128gb version or the s9

  • +3

Just got the $10 credit first try with email confirmation sent as well

    • Confirmation email? What did the email say?

      • I just got a confirmation email which contained a PDF order estimate, saying I'll get my bill on 11th May, and it will be for $98.33, $49x2 but pro rata minus a day for the $10/month discount which was applied today, a day after i signed up.

Ongoing monthly charges $59/month, but also a monthly mobile credit of $10/month.

  • Why does Telstra make it so hard to take advantage of this deal?

Pretty annoying for customers that have to battle it out on Live chat to try and get someone that knows what they are doing.

  • +3

For those who are still trying to get the deal, here's a step by step of what I did.
    1. Go to Telstra online Chat. Choose Mobile on a plan > Bill, Plan or add-ons (do not choose Buy Online - I got rejected 1221/1221 times)
    2. An automated bot will initiate the chat, say 'I want a mobile plan' or something along those lines. Proceed with the prompts and he'll connect you to an operator.
    3. State to the operator that you would like to connect to the $59/month Google Pixel 2 XL plan. They'll say they have it.
    4. Mention that you'll be porting over and are aware of the $10/month port in discount. (3/3 times I tried they said ok)
    5. Mention that you are also aware of the 5gb/month data bonus. (3/3 times I tried they said ok)
    6. Now you'll be prompted to either go into a Telstra store (or JBHIFI, worked for me) or proceed with their online sales team.
-If you go instore, they'll most likely deny you of the extras because they can't do it. So sign up first and get upgraded once you have ported
ported over via online chat team, but make sure you have a transcript of the online consultant saying yes to both bonuses prior to signing up.
-I personally didn't go through with their sales team but it should be a straight forward process (I think).
    7. Repeat steps 1-5 if you're getting rejected.

Please note that I am not responsible for anything … do this at your own risk.

    • You tried 1221 times?

      • +1

        give or take 1200

    • +2

An automated bot will initiate the chat, say 'I want a mobile plan' or something along those lines. Proceed with the prompts and he'll connect you to an operator.

In stead of saying "I want a mobile plan" say I have a billing issue - this will put you through to billing. They are more receptive to the idea

  • +1

I got the the 5gb extra data and $10 port in discount. Thanks OP and Ozbargainers. What a great deal!!

    • How long did it take for it to show up on your account?

      • how would it show in your account? I just thought it would start showing in your next bill $59 bill (assuming no excess zspemd) and a $10 credit ?

        • Yeah makes sense, although I would expect the 5gb of data to show up sometime

        • @matust:
The 5gb took about 20 minutes to show up on the usage meter for me.. and i received my first bill last night for $49 which was a few days it was allocated to my account.

        • @Talos: did the discount get added during the month of usage, or in the few days between the end of usage and the bill being issued.

Mine was between the end of usage month and billing and isn't on the bill

        • @Talos: thanks I contacted them again and it is showing up now. Cheers

  • +4

Just a note for people that didn't know, this plan allows you to access a year of free AFL, NRL, AFLW & Netball matches live. AFL Yearly pass is around $90 so that's another bonus on top of this fantastic deal. It's also data-free.

  • I just tried online chat and could not get the $10 port in discount, she refused to acknowledge it.

    • just try again and hopefully get a different operator

  • +3

Got my bill yesterday and the $10 discount wasn't applied. I got onto live chat and was told the discount wasn't eligible with this plan, and that the previous live chat consultant didn't leave any notes, and that the reference number I was given was for a different order still on pending status.

I emailed them my full chat transcript with the reference number and she said her manager has approved the transcript and the discount will be honoured. I now have an email with an order estimate invoice detailing the plan cost and discount price that will start from my next bill on the 8th May.

So first two month's at full price for me. Good luck all.

  • They're probably getting a hundred online chats per day with people wanting the discount and all saying they have a transcript to prove it.

  • Guys, I successfully got it $49 with 20GB data just now, thanks for all your help.

As others mentioned, best to online chat to their billing team.

If someone can quickly answer, how do I save the chat transcript from Telstra as proof?

    • +1

If you go to live chat through the Telstra website the system will automatically email you the transcript. That's how I had mine.

If you're in the telstra app the only way I've found is by screenshots.

      • +1

Yep worked it out, at the end it gave me option to email transcript. Thanks.

So stoked with this deal, deal of the century.

    • i tried they said case officer will be assigned.can you pm reference number?
      thnx in advance.

  • I was successful as well. I signed up in store and managed to secure the extra 5GB then. I followed sandman87's advice and mentioned a billing issue, spoke to Umesh who honored the $10 dollar discount and applied it.

I have no use for the Mini Google Home so if anyone is interested PM me.

  • Just wondering, if I got chat transcript confirming $49 for 20GB data. Can I just bring that in telstra store to show them and they will lock it in or???

  • Weird - had a chat (good chat), entered email address, no email. Was to a telstra email account. Have no desire to go through the chat again.

Will a text copy in word be enough proof you reckon?

  • +1

Got my bundle today at JB hifi Westfield Doncaster. Seems like theyre still bringing in new stock. My phone was manufactured 9 Jan but still has quite prominent blue shift but you get used to it. Chatted to telstra online and also got $10 discount and 5 extra Gb though can't confirm $10 discount until the bill comes. Thanks to everyone who contributed, such a wholesome community :)

    • Can you tell the build date from the box?

      • +1

from a xda post, you can go to http://www.imeipro.info/check_lg.html and type in your IMEI to check.

        • it doesn't say on the box

        • @rickyricardo6:

Thanks, a bit disappointed the blue shift is still there though. Did you go through normal chat or billing?

        • @gadget: went through billing which was suggested previously. Went through chat before and got rejected but billing was easier.

  • Got it today from JB Leichhardt. Great service and heaps of stock with headphones and google mini in black and black&white.
Also got the $10 discount on chat just then. All good:) Thanks O.P

  • Got the deal for the misso and I JBHifi at Glendale. Had to run down to woolworths and get vodafone sims to port a new number over as we were already in contract with telstra. So new numbers unfortunately, but the jbhifi chick added on the 5gb each then just got onto Telstra online chat and theyve given us both the $10 discounts

    • It appears that it's a bit of luck of the draw as to who serves you. The JB Hi-Fi chick I had had no idea how to add the bonus.
      Well done.
