  • Shopmonk trustworthy! Bought two phones from them in the past

    • Trustworthy indeed.

    • Definitely not trustworthy given the amount of incorrect models and items they've sent out in the past.

For me personally - they sent the first model of an item when I bought the second, and when asked about it, they just said 'you got the correct one'. Had to go through PayPal dispute to return the item and get money back (and yet wee still have to cover return costs for their scammy tactics).

  • phone is ok

      Phone is fine?

      • Enough with these stupid memes…

  • I just bought yesterday from the other deal. Should of held out :(

    • Up to you. This seller sends rooted phone.

      • +3

He/she said "just bought". Clearly purchasing on the deal is unavailable as a viable option.

        • +2

          My bad

      • what do you mean by rooted phone? Surely they don't root it for you - it doesn't mention anything like that

        • They don't mention. They buy phone from overseas market and then root it to make it suitable for Australian market

        • @Unavailable: oh well, I've ordered. If I remember I'll report back. But I think it should just be the global version. If it's pre rooted then that's less work for me having the unlock the bootloader and whatnot

  • Does ShopMonk charge US$ or AU$ via Paypal?

    • $au

  • Global version? - I wish Shopmonk would list which ROM they stocked

    • +3

I think if it's the A1 then it's global as it use only the pure Android from AndroidOne program provided by Google.

      • Ahh that's good to know - it has frustrated me in the past looking at there Xiaomi phones as to what they are actually selling… Makes sense with this however ;)

        • I think Xiaomi has the 5x that using the same specs but running MIU, this A1 isn't

  • Is there any reasons not to buy this if my parents are looking for a smart phone right now (sub $250)?

I heard there's new models coming soon, but are they any different?

    • If they need b28 and NFC.. Or local warranty.

    • +1

Theres always new models coming. But the A2 is due in the 1/2 half of the year.

The only thing to look at is coverage. Personally I switch off 4G & force 3G (as you get ~33% extra battery life and often better coverage). Even with Telstra the coverage is better and quite quick for browsing & steaming vids.

      • Lucky you for living in a fast 3G reception area. Do you mean an A2 will be released in the 2nd half of this year?

        • +1

Yes the A2. I've travelled from Melbourne all the way up to the Sunshine coast & Tesltra 3G has been quite fast & certainly great coverage, (better coverage then Mrs Supabrudda on Tesltra 4G). Most people have moved to 4G, so I figure the 3G towers are running well below capacity. It really does save battery.

          @supabrudda:

I believe your experience. But for others like me who live regional or rural, getting a low 4G signal mainly coming from a B28 tower means the difference between that and no/occasional weak 3G signal.

Also forcing 3G can work out the other way around for some re battery life too.

Driving along one of our major roads on the East coast is different to living/working along that road, or worse still more than a few Klm. away from HWY/city or in a valley or wrong side of the hill.

98% of the population lives in less than 20% of Australian land area, and even within that area there are low/black spots.

P.S. you drove less than 1 Klm past where I live N.N.S.W. ( if the wind blows East we can hear the freeway at night, as well as the ocean if it's West lol. ), but unfortunate not high/close enough to the towers ( all 3 Telcos ) to get good solid stable signals on both 4G, especially 3G.

        • +1

@ozhunter68: really, you get a better 4G then 3G? that's interesting (if it's Telstra). I spend a fair bit of time up in Nthrn NSW and 3G works so much better then 4G. But yes it can work the other way, if there's no 3G towers nearby.

        • +1

          @supabrudda:

For the most part I agree with your experience, but after living and visiting many friends in the region ( Byron Shire ), lot's get flaky to no reception.

Like you say, some get better 3G than 4G, sometimes other way round and often none at all, Telstra included.

  • Does this phone work on the Optus and Vodafone network?

    • Will work in most places but will struggle in rural 4G on Optus due to missing Band 28. May also have problems in dense CBD elevators etc. Vodfone will be just fine it has all bands Vodafone currently offers.
