    Don't get the 14GB thing……….

  • yeah it's strange, maybe they take 16gb faulty memory chips and disable some of it to make a 14gb drive? like they do with some graphics chips

My 16GB only has 14.9GB writable and is classified as a 16GB & I don't think the manufacturer wants to call it a 14.9GB Flash Disk.

But it does seem odd that it's only got 13.7GB writable. I wouldn't trust these flash disks they'll probably break down in a couple of months and then you'll lose all your data.

For decades hard drive manufacturers and now other forms of storage have used base 10 for their storage specifications where as your computer uses base 2. 1000 bytes instead of 1024. That difference coupled with the overhead of formatting the drive for use results in losing about 9% of the supposedly usable drive space.

Technically, the sneaky drive makers are right as "kilo" means 1000 not 1024. That's where kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, etc come in. I refuse to use that terminology, IEEE and IEC standards be damned :-)
