Not full HD, will not buy

    • You can get an entry level Acer Aspire 3 with FHD screen ( matte ) for $405 if you Click & Collect but has a lot slower CPU and half the RAM &

HHD space. Still a good deal for many with a nice slim light chassis. Reading the reviews, not the best of battery life though, maybe 2-5 hrs in

      real world use.

      https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/acer-aspire-3-156-inches-inte…

For $559 this is a decent price from JB with current i5 cpu and 8GB ram, just no DVD and need to swap out the HHD to SSD to make it slick.

      • 7200 is last gen CPU.

        • +4

For myself and most people looking for a bargain here when it comes to CPU's current gen and last gen would still be considered current/recent. You would not get a 8000 series discounted like this.

I probably should have put with good i5 for the price. If only it had a SSD already lol.

  • Dark TN screen?

    • Dark as in not very bright?

      • -4

Dark as in it my picks my cotton.

      • Yes. But more importantly, is it TN? Is it safe to assume that if what type of panel is not mentioned, it's TN?

        • +1

yes, it's a TN panel. If it was IPS they would scream !!!IPS!!!
but I think we had this convo before, scroll down, you can put an IPS screen in. Even an HD IPS screen if you are not a big fan of Full HD as far as I remember..

        • @kasaresj: I don't want to do that. I'm just going to wait till I find one that meets my needs exactly. Sorry to keep asking this.

  • Does HP have international warranty assuming i want to bring this overseas as a present?

    TRS gst claim

Maybe we can bring down the price further if we buy 5% discount jbhifi vouchers and come instore to purchase the laptop?

    • -1

Just be aware that some places. Not sure if JB is one of then
If you use gift cards. You get a non gst tax invoice.
      So trs won't work

      • +1

For buying gift cards, yes no gst as its like a cash.

But if buying goods such as laptop, they should provide proper invoice with gst else they might be violating some law.

I guess only those duty free shops are allowed to provide non gst invoice.

      • +2

Hah? You pay GST and get a GST invoice regardless of the method of payment.

  • A pixel density of ~100PPI is quite terrible. I wouldn't be looking at this for extended periods of time.

    • That's about what my desktop monitor is at.

      • I'd consider upgrading if it's able to, probably relatively cheap.

hmm I will check on laptopScreen which screen it uses.

I recently bought an entry level HP laptop and of course it came with a dim TN HD panel.

but that laptop used standard 15 inch panel, so I ordered a new IPS FullHD panel off eBay for about $80, and put it into the laptop.

looking at the picture, this laptop could be easy to upgrade panel, too.

    • Could you put a link for the ebay listing you purchased. Also what was the model HP of your 15" laptop. Interested in looking into this myself. Thanks

      • +1

        I bought an HP 250 G6.
I will put u0 the link soon! the screen came from UK packed in a whole roll of bubble wrap.

according to LaptopScreen, this laptop in the deal is using the standard screen, too.

        https://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/HP-Compaq/HP%2015…

So you can purchase the same item I purchased.

In general, when you see a laptop that you like everything in, except for screen, do this:
        - find out exact laptop model
        - go to LaptopScreen, find screens for this model, most importantly the physical appearance and connector type and position
        - go to eBay and search "IPS screen 15"
        - make sure it looks the same as the one on laptopScreen
        - check on youtube if it's easy to replace screen. maybe you're lucky and your model will be there

in general, avoid touch screens, they are much harder to replace. And Lenovo laptops some of them are very hard to disassemble.

Mine HP 250 G6 took 10 minutes to replace the screen, and I only needed old credit card and philips screwdriver.

        • How do you prevent dust from getting under the screen?

        • @lostn: after reassembly, if done with all precautions, it's no different to original assembly. I've never had issues with dust, to be honest.

        • @kasaresj: i can't even put a screen protector on a phone without dust getting under it.

        • @lostn: me neither XD

also in general, especially on the budget end of laptop model range, they are building new models around existing screens, not the other way around, so you can be sure 99% of them are interchangeable.

so any laptop pretty much can be upgraded to have a better screen, with a few sad exceptions :) but use the process I outlined in the other message to be 100% sure.

This makes any budget laptop with good enough processor a great deal! Upgrade storage to SSD, replace panel with a FullHD IPS one, and you've got a premium laptop for a fraction of the price.

If it breaks, put the old screen in, and go for warranty. If they tell you you voided it (good chance they won't), buy another one, and it still will be cheaper this way.

        • Thanks heaps for all the great info, will look into it :-)

        • +1

@ozhunter68: haha please do! buying a cheap laptop and upgrading the screen for premium experience is true ozbargain spirit right there! :D

  • Check out the previous Asus F510UA from Amazon. i5 8th gen, IPS full hd.

  • Damn. I was actually thinking of getting this.

  • Expired?
    I thought jbhifi 30% off until mar-14.
    Maybe stocks limited instore
