Does this work with a PC?

I thought PS4’s new firmware allows you to save the entire game collection externally?

    • +8
    • +2

They added the ability to do that a week after I took my PS4 Pro apart and put a 4TB HDD inside. I guess it's still cleaner to not have to use an external drive though.

      • +1

So you can run games straight of the external SSD drive?
How is their bandwidth? Is there much of a difference between SSD and normal drives?

        • +2

The worst thing is installing updates - very quick on internal. On external there's a massive copy time before a lengthy install. GT Sport was painful on external.

        • @coxjon: pretty sure you can where things download too somewhere. My internal is full full, and no prompt or messages make it seem like like it moves to the external after

The SSD is developed specifically for use with your Xbox One.

Don't need an additional hard drive myself (yet), but can't you use any SSD?

    • +3

yeah but this one has been "developed specifically" for it - whatever that means?

maybe it's got a preferred usb to sata chipset xbox's work better with? who knows.

it'd be interesting to know what drive is inside. seagate aren't up there on my list of reputable SSD brands

      • +21

yeah but this one has been "developed specifically" for it - whatever that means?

Maybe they're referring to the green stripes on the side that they developed specifically for the XBox. :)

seagate aren't up there on my list of reputable SSD brands

        Why?

it'd be interesting to know what drive is inside.

Pretty sure it'd be a seagate drive. ;)

        • -6

          Why?

Do you know anyone with a seagate SSD? Can't see any Seagate SSDs on the msy price list either. Plenty of hybrid drives but it's almost like they bet on the hybrid thing but never bothered to really push SSDs.

Pretty sure it'd be a seagate drive. ;)

thanks sherlock. model, read / write speeds etc

        • +2

I haven't used a seagate SSD but every hard drive that's ever prematurely failed on me has been a seagate HDD. No problems so far with WD black HDD and Sandisk/Samsung/Intel SSD's.

          Yes, i've bought three.

Can't see any Seagate SSDs on the msy price list either.

Wait. So Seagate isn't on your list of reputable SSD brands because you don't know anyone with one, and it's not on MSY's price list?

        • -6

          @eug:

          Yes, i've bought three.

wow really? standard 2.5" sata seagate branded SSDs? or external ones?

Wait. So Seagate isn't on your list of reputable SSD brands because you don't know anyone with one, and it's not on MSY's price list?

what am i waiting for sorry? they're not on my reputaple list as I've never seen them on any recommendation list, nor at any major pc retailer in australia. when someone asks for an SSD recommendation you see Samsung up there but i've never seen anyone recommend a seagate. Can't seem to find a single seagate SSD deal on ozbargain either…?

but hey - enjoy your seagate SSDs :)

        • +3

@ideasman: Pretty much all Seagate SSDs are Enterprise drives. SAS, NVMe etc. so that's why you wouldn't be seeing them on review sites. Would be curious to see what SSD these drives actually contain.

Seagate have actually collaborated with Micron to make these drives.

@ideasman: I try to embrace negatives votes on my comments. Shows that people really do care and best of all get strung up on something so insignificant.

wow really? standard 2.5" sata seagate branded SSDs?

Yes, really. Standard 2.5" sata seagate branded SSDs. Umart sells them. They used to carry their enterprise SSDs too.

what am i waiting for sorry?

For a figure of speech. Thanks for waiting, no need to apologize.

they're not on my reputaple list as I've never seen them on any recommendation list, nor at any major pc retailer in australia.

So because you're not familiar with a brand, you don't think they're reputable? OK then. I just wanted to know if there was a proper reason behind your statement. No idea why you suddenly became so overly defensive with your aggressive replies, all from a single "why?". For some reason Seagate SSDs look like a very touchy subject to you.

        • -2

          @eug:

I'm very familiar with the brand. So much so that I have a business recovering data from their (and wd / samsung / toshiba /etc ) rotational disks.

Thanks for the info though - i'll be sure to keep them off my reputable SSD list for clients. Then again, seeing as they're not really available anywhere (umart only has external ones) I'm not sure it'll ever come up anyway.

When it comes to rotational disks - I do actually recommend Seagate over WD just due to the amount of WDs I get coming through (plus the TTL diag port on the seagates is great for recovery)

        • @ideasman:

So much so that I have a business recovering data from their (and wd / samsung / toshiba /etc ) rotational disks.

          Great, but irrelevant to SSDs.

I still don't understand why you got so triggered by a simple question. Hope you're not that touchy IRL.

        • +1

          @eug:
i only mentioned it as you seemed to suggest i was saying seagate wasn't reputable:

"So because you're not familiar with a brand"

i was just trying to say that just because a brand has a good name, doesn't mean all their product lines are good. seagate rotational disks: i'd recommend them over anyone else whereas SSDs - seagate would be towards the bottom of the list.

        • +1

          @ideasman:

i only mentioned it as you seemed to suggest i was saying seagate wasn't reputable:

This post is about a Seagate SSD, we were talking about Seagate SSDs, and the quote I was replying to was you specifically referring to Seagate SSDs, so my reply was in reference to Seagate SSDs.

You said you don't think Seagate is a reputable brand for SSDs.

          I asked "Why?".

You replied with "Do you know anyone with a Seagate SSD?" and proceeded to say you can't see it on MSY's price list.

To me, those aren't really good reasons to consider a brand not reputable. Do they fail more frequently than other SSD brands? If yes, then that'd be a good reason. But simply not knowing anyone with a Seagate SSD or MSY not selling them doesn't mean Seagate SSDs are unreliable.

        • @eug:
lol nah i stand by both of those reasons and i highly doubt you have 1 seagate ssd

          peace out

        • @ideasman: I could take a photo of at least one of them, but I don't think it's worth my time. You'd probably just claim I googled the photo anyway. No idea why you're so anti-Seagate-SSD when you have absolutely zero experience with them.

        • @eug:

yeah man a photo would be awesome. just put a piece of paper with your username in there. i'd LOVE to see one!

cos no one in their right mind would buy one over the other big names unless they had no clue

        • @ideasman: upvoted because I can't see why you should be downvoted for your comment

        • @ideasman:

cos no one in their right mind would buy one over the other big names unless they had no clue

          Ha thought so

        • marketing, blogs and bad interpretation of stats often seem to overtake sound research, design and detailed engineering analysis when people look at storage devices …. i own Seagate, WD and hitachi and make decision based on a case by case and model number and what is inside the drive and not just brand.

        • be interesting to see if they are mlc or tlc and which controller they use.
would be a while before a shucked on is on you tube for a year down.

        • @ideasman:

          Ha thought so

That's a nice attempt to steer the conversation away from your lack of experience with Seagate SSDs, but it doesn't change anything.

You're basically saying "If I don't know anyone who has it, or MSY doesn't sell it, it isn't a reputable device".

        • @eug:
I'm not basically saying that- I'm precisely saying that.

My reputable list is exactly that, my list. And Seagate SSDs aren't on it. But let's keep going round and round :)

        • +1

          @eug:

I don't have any and they are not on the price list of one shop is not a good basis to validate a point of view to say they are not reputable.

I have used them before where I worked, they were all enterprise-grade SSDs used in a NAS and had no problems with any of them.

MSY don't have them because they deal with the general public and sell what is popular. Lots of other shops (eg - Mwave, Scorptec, Computer Alliance) do sell Seagate SSDs.

There are even Seagate NVME SSDs.

If somebody were to actually read some of the reviews on this drive, you would find this has UASP and reads and writes data at over 400Mb/s and can significantly drop game load times significantly(EG - quoted from TweakTown's review using Final Fantasy XV - going from the load save screen to the game loading, took 1:40.6 with the stock Xbox HDD. With the Game Drive SSD, that time was cut by a substantial amount, down to 24.5 seconds.

          Read more: https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/7988/seagate-512gb-ssd-gam…
          )
I already use both USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Thunderbolt 3 enclosures, so I have at least some experience with fast external drives using both SATA and NVME SSDs.

At this price range, this would appear to be a good buy for those that need this sort of product.

      • some sata enclosures, and older expansions drives has issues with spinning down as the xbox supplied power all the time to,the USB connector …. so drive would spin 24x7 even with xbox turned off.
the seagate spins down as do some ( not all) others now.

believe they have a tweak now on the One S that powers down one of the usb ports but haven’t tried it and you can’t always believe blogs until you do.

        • Good info mate. Explains why the 120mm fan I've got hooked into one of the USB ports never spins down.

Might need a specifically designed USB fan controller for Xbox one

      • "developed specifically" = you find out it's just formatted to 'exFAT' XD

Reviews on how it compare to standard hard drive:
    https://www.windowscentral.com/review-seagate-game-drive-xbo…

    • Be good to know how it fares connected to the Xbox One X…

    • Pretty meager gains tbh given the money. You'd expect drops as big as 90% if that weren't on console. They just aren't optimized to take full advantage of SSD's unfortunately as many other reviews have shown.

    • Thanks. That's really useful. I'd much rather be able to store 4-8x as many games and wait an 10 seconds between levels, so for my purposes I'll pass.

  • I am looking for xbox 360 external drive my console is only 4 GB now i need to expand my console, any specials or can i use this one?

        • xbox 360 is a different beast to the xbox one and why there used to be a whole market of reflashed OEM dives for upgrades for internal drives rather than just external drives.

I think a 4TB USB HDD is the way to go if you're buying it for a games console.

      • Nope, portability and reliability when shooting with a drone.

  • +6

Bonus: some Seagate drives provide 100% lossy data compression.

    • means additional storage beyond capacity ;)

    • Lossy? Or lostless?

  • Awesome price for 512GB. Tempted for PC use.

  • +4

It's been shown in many reviews that consoles don't benefit from SSD's as much as other devices do, because the games and OS aren't designed for operation on SSD's. Sometimes load times for games or saves don't change at all. Something to be weary of prior to purchase.

    • exactly right

    • Just like 4K! Heyo!

      • i put a SSD in my PS3 and its still slow AF.
i have a 1TB HDD in my xbox ONE and its way more responsive than my PS3.

    • +1

Just halved my load times for Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4.

  • Woop. No more 10minute BF1 load times

    • Research that first - some games don't actually load any faster with the SSD, because of poor programming.

  • I watched a YouTube video before demonstrates external SSD improves loading time for Xbox One S but not Xbox One X, but I bought one regardless. So cheap thanks OP

  • +7

I know this is an SSD, but since it's widely known that consoles get very little benefit from an SSD external drive (obviously very different for boot drives on PCs), why on Earth would you spend $180 on 512Gb, when for $60 you can get 1 Tb external storage (or 2Tb for $100) that will work just as well on the XBox?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/365593

I can see why this "special" M$ drive is reduced so much. Because even at $180 (RRP$329 is pathetic since you can buy a whole XB1 for that!), it's still terrible value.

Load times DO NOT improve by using this drive… at least certainly not enough to justify its price! Just get a normal external drive folks. Think about how many extra games you could store on 2Tb… PLUS for the $80 in change you could get an extra game or two! Makes no sense buying the deal. At all.

Not negging, because technically this is a "good price" for this particular product. I just question why on Earth you'd buy one!

    • True - this was a better deal for console use - greater capacity trumps the limited performance improvements of SSD for this application (if what you say is correct):

2TB Xbox Game Drive for $99 - offered in lieu of pricing error on the 4TB

I grabbed the 2TB for $99 - I know you can get cheaper generic drives, but I do like the Xbox branding.

    • You're wrong about load times.

I just went and bought this for my ps4 pro. Tested load time of horizon zero dawn before moving to ssd, 2 minutes from ps4 menu to walking around in game. After copying it to this drive, 1:05. Haven't tested GT Sport yet.

    • Where did you get the idea "it's widely known that consoles get very little benefit from an SSD external drive"?

Most online review/testing suggest Xbox One get quite noticeable loading time improvement. I bought one followed OP's post, the result is quite pleasant.

      • The result is quite 'pleasant'! Haven't seen that way of describing the advantages in any of the reviews I've read! I'll hook mine up tonight and enjoy the pleasantness too ;)

        • I always play RPGs , things like AC origins and SOW, Skyrim… Traveling between locations used to be a pain, always wait for loading.

Now I don't have the issue any more

      • To answer your question about "widely known", there's a stack of reviews online that show how little benefit these drives are… but this one posted below is the most thorough.

        https://www.hardcoregamer.com/2016/12/07/review-seagate-game…

For MOST games, there's only a few seconds in it between a HDD and SDD.
Granted there's a couple of exceptions, but for most games it's simply not worth the ridiculous pricing. It's not even close to worth it, but I guess if you really love one particular game and play it religiously and really want faster load times, then go nuts… go buy this.

But most people would get far better value out of a far cheaper 2Tb drive, than a drive quarter of the size and triple the price.

  • Sweet, just got 3 at my local officeworks. Should give some new life to my old linux boxes.

  • Looking to buy one for backing up drone footage in the field. Is this any good?

  • +2

I don't even know why I bother looking at Officeworks online, none ever have the items in stock I am searching for.

  • Has the word game on it. Shut up and take my money!

  • +1

Two in stock at the officeworks on exhibition st, melbourne. Sticker said rrp 329, was 245, now 180. So a final clearance.

Didn't grab one as I've never used the 250gb I picked up in an officeworks clearance, I probably won't use this either

  • +2

Can it be shucked? Is it a SATA drive in a case?

    • This guy shucks.

  • Tried to charge me $26 for delivery, so i don't think it's including delivery

  • Great for dropping at school in PUBG.

  • +4

For Xbox, will improve game and level loading times, but not really worth it for the relatively minimal seconds saved. If you travel a lot with your drive - taking to mates houses - it could be good as it will be more robust than spinning HD. I'd personally rather have a larger capacity drive and wait an extra 10 seconds for a game to load.

  • Got one online and collected in store 1 hr later.

  • +3

Everyone saying this will not improve load times, on my ps4 pro, it HALVED the load time of Horizon Zero Dawn.

    From my other comment above:

"I just went and bought this for my ps4 pro. Tested load time of horizon zero dawn before moving to ssd, 2 minutes from ps4 menu to walking around in game. After copying it to this drive, 1:05. Haven't tested GT Sport yet."

    • +1

Just verified the stats with Horizon Zero Dawn on my PS4 Pro!

      • +1

GT sport is nuts now too. Like I don't even have time to go get a beer anymore.

  • Can this be used as a regular external SSD for my video editing?

    • Yes, it's just a regular external SSD.

      • No, it’s not! It has a green stripe - makes it lots faster. Of course, a red stripe would make it even faster.

  • +1

Use on my xbox one x, absolutely load things much faster. Tried sow and ac origins, at least save half time when traveling between locations. Happy buy. Thanks op

    • on our xbox . one S .. we have SSD for the games played often, and new downloads that take overnight and a 2tb spindle drive for bulk storage where we move games to from the SSD, yes they do load faster but for some people it’s a trade of for speed vs storage vs size per $.

Seagate SSD vs other brands … seagate don’t make their own chips or SSD controllers i believe so the question should be what is inside rather than just cosmetics outside.

  • +1

Found an OW with 2 left and picking one up in the next hour. Thanks OP!

    • i’m tempted but we have evo850 500gb drives from upgrades , this seagate looks like a nice package at this price if you want an SSD

  • +2

Kogarah Bay has 1 left behind the counter as at 9AM 10/3/18. Thanks OP.
