    • Thanks for the link.

Hey rep, can we put a request for some Asian countries for next free lot? :)

        • I don't expect we'll make any much more of a habit of giving these out too much in the future. :-)

1 more travel guide to the list.

  • do these automatically update, or do I need to download the new versions if I already have the old ones?

    • Like any app on your iPhone, you will be alerted if there are updates (assuming app is still installed). No hard clicked to download it again. :-)

    • +1

If you click on the update button in the App Store app on your iDevice, it will alert you if there are any updates available for your installed apps, and you can select to download all app updates or update individual apps. Apps can also be updated via iTunes, but then you will need to sync your iDevice in order to have the latest updates on your iDevice. Please note however if there is a new update for an app but it is not compatible with your current iOS (iDevice firmware), then the update cannot be downloaded. Eg I had downloaded most of these Lonely Planet guides last time they were free (Iceland volcano eruption) but because I was on iOS 3.1.2 even though there were updates to the lonely planet apps I wasnt able to download them as they made use of features in iOS 4. So once I updated to iOS 4.2.1 I was able to download the latest updates.

Anyhow, the good thing is the app store automatically takes care of this and only displays compatible updates, so dont worry if the above confused you. I just detailed the other bit for you in case you ever wondered why certain apps description pages made reference to new enhancements yet you werent able to see any updates for them.

      • thanks, v helpful

thanks!! and i was just thinking.. i havent seen seen a Lonely Planet freebie for a good 2 weeks!! : )

  • Thankyou :D

  • Gold!!!!… heading to Europe next year, only missing Madrid,Barcelona & Zurich

  • Judging by the file size of these apps, most of the information stored is local?
    E.g pictures and maps?

Planning to go to Singapore but using prepaid with no internet access. It'd be awesome if it isn't dependent on large data downloads.

    • These apps have offline maps. On your travels, it uses the iPhone GPS to get your location. So no data charges!

Obviously, the maps only cover key areas of each country. It's a travel guide, not a street directory. :-)

  • Good deal but I already have most of it.

Just came back from Santiago, and the LP guide was extremely inadequate and useless. It'll list 5 random restaurants in a suburb that has 50, and they aren't the good ones either. Additionally not much useful info in terms of how to make your way around or where is good to go. Historicals and hotels aren't good enough to be useable. The only good thing, IMO, is the satisfaction of having lots of these guides in your phone. Sadly you'd be much better off saving a page from wikitravel and watching introductory videos in YouTube. Cheers!

BondSt you might be onto something…some of the reviews of these guides are WOEFUL…I have used the Lonely Planets in the past and they are second to none IMHO, but from what users say about these apps, looks like there's a lot to improve on.

Having said that, a bargain's a bargain. Hopefully they improve on some of the features in subsequent updates.

Any feedback appreciated. The content from these guides are taken from our books. Did you use the latest versions (iOS4 versions)? It's a marked improvement over the ones for ios3.

As with any guide, it's all about learning where to find the information and how to use it.

I'll pass on any feedback (beyond 'it's crap'). Just chime out any issues you've had with the guides!

  • Would love a free Japan, China or Korea one!

  • Downloading all of them right now, quota free if you're with iinet :)

  • Will these not work on iPad?

    • These are iPhone-only apps. I think it will run on iPhone-size on any iPad upgraded to ios4.

Well, I don't plan to go to these places but in the event I do, I'm sorted!

  • Square enix is having some sort of sale if anyone is interested.
