    640x480.. flashback to the Nineties.

  • Better off using an old android phone, or current phone for webcam via pc. Used to do that years ago.

    • Yes a modern android phone has a better cam than this does.

        But is it $5?

        • It's landfill.

  • lol 640x480, that's cute. Wouldn't want this even if they paid me $5

bargain !! cheaper than fake cctv dome

    • Ta, I seriously wondered what was that deal about.

  • This will be a great deal…if posted 10 years ago!

    • Haha what about inflation? $5 was worth a lot more back then :p

  • Which dial-up ISP would you recommend with that?

Awesome I can finally video chat with my msn messenger! Thank OP

    • They are going to be in awe of your old school cam video quality.

  • Wouldn't the need for USB tethering be an issue? Surely a cheap (Chinese?) wi-fi camera with better specs for only a few dollars more would be a better alternative if you have no access to a spare android phone?

For my purposes this is cheaper and easier as the raspberry pi I use as my 3D printing server is quite close to the 3D printer and is already set up to provide monitoring with a usb webcam. Just thought other people might be in need of a low res cheap webcam…guess I was wrong.

Have you confirmed this works on octoprint? I'm looking for a cheap camera, but I don't want to mess with drivers, hopefully it's plug and play?

        • No, I haven't confirmed. I'll try it when it arrives and let you know.

I recently bought a HD webcam at ALDI for $7 and it works with my Astroprint Pi box. Astroprint is a fork of Octoprint so should work fine. I saw them at a couple of ALDIs at the front of the store in an accessories rack with random chargers etc, so assume it's a regular feature at all stores.

        • @bigrizz:
Thanks, will keep an eye out next time im there.

        • @sockmafia:

Cheers, I'm using an old tablet at the moment, but need something smaller when I make a lack enclosure.

        • @oznik: Just tried the cam. Works fine with Octoprint.

        • @sockmafia: cheers!

For anyone poo-pooing the resolution on this:
The op wanted this for 3D Printing. This implies he's viewing it remotely, for short periods of time to see if the print broke and the place isn't on fire. 640 x 480 is plenty of resolution for that, and it being a generic webcam over usb lets you easily integrate it with your 3D Printing software (octoprint) so it can do a timelapse when it does each layer. It really is a cool deal.

This is much cheaper than an raspberry Pi Camera (although it would give better still photo's).

  • Is this compatible with AOL or OzEmail?
