6 months is for standard and the 3 months is the HiFi subscription

    • may be.

    • +4

I was only given 3 months for Tidal Premium

      • Yeah same

        • If you have VPN .. try with that. Not sure why you are not getting 6 months.

  • Need a free 3 months spotify. Mine just ran out again.

    • +8

There's the Philippines account option for a few bucks a month.

    • +8

There's also student/family discount, or the modified android APK. I find I use Spotify frequently enough that I'm happy to pay full price!

      • Modified spotify apk ? Do tell more pls.

        • +16

          Modified APK no longer works.

        • Yup, modified APK doesn't work anymore, everyone got banned. Including myself.

Just sign up for the student price per month, it doesn't even verify you're a student.

        • @hasher22:

Well you still need an .edu email address..

        • @hasher22: How did you get this working? it asks to upload documentation?

        • @jelko: I found a new modded APK that works. Been using it for the past week. All good :D

    • +1

There is a 3-month free promo going for Deezer, I've just moved over and I think I prefer it now.

  • +9

This is a good deal as it's free but for people who like electronic music Spotify is miles better. Tidal is rubbish and I always rotate through the same couple of play lists.

    • +2

Only thing worse than TIDAL for electronic music is Google Music yuckk

      • +1

Only thing worse than TIDAL for electronic music is Google Music yuckk

Apple Music is also trash for electronic music. American's just don't get it.

      • Google Music lets you upload your own MP3s into it for free though so you can put all your favourite tracks into it.

        • So does Apple

        • @spaceflight: Have been looking into this right now and from what I can gather you need to be an Apple Music subscriber so it's not free like Google Musics song storage.

If you subscribe to Apple Music, you'll get iCloud Music Library included as part of your $9.99 monthly subscription; otherwise, you can subscribe to Apple's iTunes Match service and pay $24.99 a year to store your iTunes library (up to 100,000 songs) in iCloud.

Google puts a limit on the number of songs you can upload, and it's rather large at 50,000 music files (free storage).

      • Google music is great

        • +3

It really isn't. Their playlists are crap.

        • @PainToad: but you can port from Spotify to Google.

I have used Spotify, Deezer and Google. Personally I will use whatever is cheap or free.

If the playlists suck, I will port from one to the other. I haven't paid for streaming in a long long time.

I only wish Deezer allowed for student memberships as they do in some countries.

        • I found Google Music rubbish, and it's not available on as many devices. Deezer is on just about every device now, including Fitbit and Xbox One.

      • The worst thing about the Google music subscription is how it bundles youtube red and removes all youtube ads! I miss all those ads :(

    • I actually prefer tidal over Apple Music and Spotify. But it’s too expensive. I use Apple Music because I can share it on the family plan with five others for just $18 pm, and we all have apple gear anyway.

      • -15% using iTunes cards

        • Does that work with the family plan? I thought it had to use ny CC.

        • @AustriaBargain: Yes, it does work with the family plan, as long as you subscribe using the account that you loaded the credit onto. Works for iCloud family subscriptions too.

        • damn, that means I’ve been wasting $4.95 a month ever since they allowed iCloud data sharing :(

        • +2

          @AustriaBargain:
As well as the family Apple Music account, I subscribe to Netflix through iTunes as well. I expect Stan would be the same. So load up with discounted iTunes cards and get the discount on the lot.

        • @AustriaBargain: hand over your OzBargain membership card to neil thanks!

        • @entropysbane: Yep, or just buy Netflix credit from Coles where they regularly give you $10 of flybuys credit, which can go towards anything, including more Netflix or Stan :)

    • By 'electronic' do mean ambient electronic?

  • +1

OP, did you sign up in Singapore or via a Singapore IP address? Wonder if that's why you are getting a 6 month subscription?

    • +2

I have VPN and I connected via Singapore IP.

  • -5

What kind of music tidal does like chick chick type music or more meaningful types do you need VPN

    • +1

Mainly hip hop, my fav genre.

      • -1

Someone negged your comment because you have different taste to them. What a sad person.

        • Someone negged you for being a logical human.

          @SimpleRoger:

Ok the one on this reply was me :P

  • +1

Be-aware that different regions have different Catalogs through Tidal. The Australian (and Hong Kong which I tried as it was the cheapest per month for HiFi) catalog doesn't have as much as the USA catalog.

    • 180 days = 6 months

So assuming op is correct it is the same.

Even though group on says it is 3 months, but when i redeemed code, it is giving me 6 months free.

      • +4

Voucher is for 3 months unless going through VPN. Direct link is 6 months for Australian residents.

You do realise you've linked the exact same deal and are attempting to compare the two?

        • +2

          checkmate

    • +1

Nice. Afterwards if in the account management you select to upgrade to Tidal HiFi it automatically changes the subscription to 3 months HiFi instead. Uncompressed FLAC music streaming. :)

      • +4

a little birdy told me that an application called 'athame' on github can download the 16bit flacs from tidal and the ""24bit"" mqa songs

        • Athame is fantastic! Used it with my previous free hifi subscription. Hi res audio ftw!

  • Can you cancel your subscription straight away and keep using it for 6 months?

    • +5

I believed you can, got this message after cancelling instantly "Thanks for streaming with TIDAL. Your subscription will come to a full stop on 14.09.18".

      • Yes, I got that too

  • +1

Dooes this work with Google Home?

    • Well i know that the only official music streaming supported by Google Home is Spotify. But it might work casting the music from an Apple or Android phone or tablet to the Google Home.

      • +3

Well i know that the only official music streaming supported by Google Home is Spotify.

Pretty confident Google Music works pretty well also ;)

        • I should have meant third party music streaming.

    • The web/phone apps can play to chromecast audio, but the desktop app can't

Only Spotify and Google Music/YT Music are integrated with Home, sadly.

    • No, currently for the Google Home native (non-casting, just voice initiated playback) support for is a no for tidal, no for deezer, no for Apple Music, no for Amazon Prime Music …. just yes to Spotify and yes to google music. Annoying, a smart speaker should support everything, including their competitor's streaming services. I don't want to buy an ecosystem, I want to buy a single product that then integrates with everything else from everyone (or as much as practical… and support for 6 music streaming services is definitely do-able).

  • +3

Thanks OP - getting this to listen to Deadmau5's recently-released idal-only EP.

    • +2

*soon to be released on March 30th

      • +1

Not sure why you got negged, enjoy listening to it!

  • +1

The HiFi version of Tidal has the best quality of the streaming services, but it doesn’t suit me being very hip hop oriented. But if you like that it is pretty good apparently.

  • +1

Verified 6 months free trial. No VPN required.
High quality setting is already pretty decent, even better than Deezer and Spotify (in my opinion).
Interface is beautiful (again, in my opinion).

    • Interesting comment about the sound.

Tidal high quality is AAC 320 Kbps (which is what you'll get if you sign up to Spotify's Premium subscription or Deezer's Premium+

      • could be differences in the mastering quality

    • Tidal streams the music louder than Spotify. All other things being equal, even a 1dB increase in sound has been known to make someone think the quality was better. The FLAC stream will sound a bit better to some people than Spotify’s org-vorbis stream of 320kbps if you’re using high quality equipment. However, the level of difference will vary depending on the type of music being played.

  • Not as good as the Deezer one (still available), particularly given that you have to give away credit card details. I always stick to PayPal in these 'free' trials to avoid dodgy charges, you can remove the automatic payment immediately.

    • -2

You can also cancel your subscription and delete your credit card immediately

    • If you press on the 'Credit card' title it gives the option to use paypal! :)

    • +1

So once I registered with PP payment option, can I remove it in PP and still use Tidal for 6 months? Ta

      • Yep, done that before and when the trial runs out, the account locks.

  • +1

Using Google Music atm and missing Spotify. Looking forward to giving Tidal a crack.

    • Is google music that bad?

      • I find it works well for what I use, and I especially love the Youtube Red, not needing to watch any more of those ads…

      • +3
        • The interface is trash
        • the playlists havent been updated in years,
        • The iOS app is horrible.
        • No social features, which some people don't care about but I've got a bunch of people I follow in Spotify to discover new music and it works well..
        • No desktop app, if you care about that
        • No lastfm, if you care about that
        • Making playlists is pretty rudimentary
        • No following artists or anything
        • Spotify connect/remote is missing, obv

        but

        • the auto-radio features work surprisingly well
        • Chromecast Audio integration is tight
        • It's dead easy to load music to your phone if you have shitty data or connection
        • its nice to not have to switch apps if you have a bunch of music stored in Google Music.
        • YT Music/YT Red is a pretty sweet bonus - especially the former if you have a google home, since it will find pretty much anything

Not much to distinguish them in the catalogue space. I picked three stupidly obscure bands ive been listening to lately,

        • All three did fine on Paysage d'Hiver and Angel Eyes (although they all lumped multiple artists with that name together)
        • Spotify/Google had complete discos for Gillian Carter but Tidal only had 1/5 albums
    • what you missing?

      • The lack of a proper desktop app and inability to control playback from any device are my two main ones.

        • like spotify

  • +2

I didn't know any of the people on the Tidal page except for Beeouncy.

    • +1

      There's Kendreek Leemur

  • Not that bad. I like Spotify's Discover and Playlists. Once I have run out of trials I will probably go back to paying for Spot… unless Tidal proves to out do them.

  • the true value

  • anyone know how much data p/h? edit: nvm

    • hifi: 800mb+ an hour
      high quality: 300mb an hour

rough estimates from what I've seen using their free trials

  • +1

Awesome yep got 6 months too, thanks :)
    https://go.tidal.com/au/reg/AU2001/auOTR2inULgx/PREMIUM

  • Does Tidal have non-English music as well?

    • Yes

  • is this available all the time? or once off?
signed up to the 3mths (hifi) using one email, wondering if I should signup now using another email for the 6mths (non-hifi)….before this 6mths free trial runs out…

    • You can

  • Hi all, before cancelling make sure you convert to family membership:) I just reactivated to add family members (as otherwise it doesn’t let you). Even better

  • Jay-Z and co gettin' desperate?

    • As apposed to every other service not doing this as well?

  • Been a while since I looked, I've always preferred Pandora because of the way it finds music that I like for me based on my input. Have the other products caught up yet?

    • Pandora has been shut in Australia for a good year or so

  • +1

The big issue with bouncing between music streaming services is that playlists don't carryover. Anyone know of a third party tool I can use that would export playlists from Google Play music and inject them into services like Tidal?

    • I've been thinking the same thing since the last 3 months deal…but that's probably asking too much
