Dell Inspiron 13 5000 Full HD (2 in 1 Touchscreen Laptop) Core i3 7100u, 4GB, 256GB SSD, $679.20 from Dell eBay

230
PHLUFFY

Good laptop for uni students and generally anyone else that finds a 14 or 15 inch device hard to carry around.

One of the main cons of this laptop is the weight: at 1.6kg's this device is quite heavy for it's size.
The second con is the battery life — expect a peak of 6:10 hours with Wifi and web browsing activity.

To get the most out of this laptop you'll also need to spend another $65 dollars for a RAM upgrade, but otherwise, 4GB will be sufficient for general office tasks and for people that can live with a max of 12 Chrome tabs.

  • No wired LAN? Odd.

    • Nope. The Lenovo Yoga series also eschew an Ethernet port, as they figured the laptops would be mostly used when out and about.

      Ethernet - USB Dongles required.

      • Ok. Thanks for the info. Not for me then. Can't assume anything these days I guess.

Than LAN port on the Dell posted the other day was 100Mbit.

I guess soon I'll be looking for USB 3 to Gigabit LAN adapters.

  • I have a 2gb hp stream and have 15+ tabs open most days… why would the Dell struggle with this sort of task? Just asking out of curiosity as I am looking @ purchasing. Thx.

  • any idea re battery life? school expect kids to have ultra book with all day battery life… who can afford that for their kids (and then worry about them smashing it on the first day to school)….

    • +1

Not good enough. 6 hours average.

My recommendation for school students lacking anywhere to charge their laptops is a Lenovo E480. This is a clamshell notebook that costs a minimum of $850+ and will have a 8th gen Quad core CPU, a much better loadout of 8GB RAM and optionally a discrete AMD RX550 (I recommend this if games are on the menu)

There is also a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series that usually goes for $300, but it's out of stock currently. The screen is very poor at 1366 x 768, but it's low price and 10 hour battery life makes it a good option for younger kids. Or clumsy kids.

      • the Dell 11 3000 is what they have now but I find that it's too slow for what they need for school and it just doesn't last the whole day at school on most days…. and also I found the build quality to be quite poor with the power buttons getting stuck etc….

  • This laptop has a really dim screen. I didn't believe the review I read initially, until I dropped by JB near my place. It's really bad.

  • I can't accept any manufacturer selling laptops at this price level without backlit keyboards.

  • Looks to be cheaper here with discount code PICK5 it comes to AU $664.05. Delivery is quicker and there is an option for collect at Woolworths. Could someone confirm if there are other models of the 13 5000 or if it's the same?

    Thanks

    • I believe it's identical. The only way to check is to ask Microsoft though, but the CPU, SSD and RAM is pretty much the same.
