  • Cheapest at MSY is $25, so this is very nice. Does anyone know the read/write speed of this drive? Some cheap drives can be quite slow.

    • I do not see Lexar 16G for $25 at msy?

      • Well, cheapest 16Gb stick is $25 (PQI or Kingston). Most cheap sticks use the same memory from Samsung, with the only probable difference being in the controller.

  • Are these high speed?

Using lower speed drives for playing movies on compatible dvd players or a STB can cause juttering and audio lag.

  • Price match at officeworks?

    • +1

I did check with officeworks (at Maribyrnong, High Point Centre). They do not have the exact model available in store. So, can't price-match. Not so sure about other stores though.

This is the one I think it is the same with what offering at Harvey Norman for $19 (http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…)

    • yes if you are early? before they update their price but may not worth the time if you have a harvey norman nearby

  • +2
    • Just a quick question
What makes both 1TB and 2TB cost the same ($99)?

      • +3

        seriously?

        2.5" vs 3.5"

        • lol size vs portability?

        • +5

cmon guys, that was a good question. not everyone is a tech head.

the small one (2.5 inch drive) is powered by usb so its easily potable, the big one (3.5inch drive) needs ac power and its annoying to lug around.

  • +7

I wouldn't get this usb, you can have a look at this review http://www.techreaction.net/2010/09/28/review-lexar-jumpdriv…

    18.72mp/s read and 3.4 write mp/s speed… weak.

    • 18Mb/s is perfectly fine. It's all that can be expected from a cheap drive. I have a much more expensive Sony stick that achieves 30 read, 20 write. But 3.4Mb/s write for the Lexar is basically atrocious. It might be borderline fast enough for recording MPEG2 DTV.

    • -5

There's nothing wrong with those speeds.

      • +6

Moving 16gb to the Lexar USB at 3.4mb/s would take over an hour.

My USB stick which writes at 18mb/s takes around 15 minutes for 16gb.

  • Bugger did not see these while I was there

  • if this stick is up to standard for you suggest you pricematch wheres theres stock.

consider ththat theres better prices to come as the USB3 makes inroads.

  • will try officeworks price match and beat tomorrow

    • doesnt work. the guy at office works called up harvey norman confirmed that it was on sale but "since there is no stock anywhere, we cant price match it" and im in melbourne. im sure if there are harvey normans around the area that do stock it i guess they will price match it, but in my case being in melbourne and apparently sold out everywhere the guy didnt do it.

  • Retravision has a 8GB Toshiba USB Stick for $10.00. Speed test

    18.92 MB/s Read
    7.93 MB/s Write.

    • hmmm i would rather fast write speeds than slow write speeds..

pity hardly any retravisions here in sydney anymore

got a link? maybe a pricematch from somewhere?

      • If you go to the Retravision website and search for this TOS0854. It should show the item for $9.95 with no picture. It looks like this http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/storage/usb/u2p-008gt

        Thanks

        • Interesting, the Toshiba specs actually say:
Write Speed: up to 3.9 MBytes/s
Read Speed: up to 17 MBytes/s

        • thanks..

where did you get ur speed tests from?

the specs on that toshiba link says

          Write Speed: up to 3.9 MBytes/s **
          Read Speed: up to 17 MBytes/s **

  • My own speed test using a program called CDM 3, I can upload a pic of the results?

  • Toshiba 16gb $20 @ MLN.. but yeah gotta pay for shipping

    https://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=1043&typeID=

    • +1

not if you come in store
shipping is also $9 per 3 accerrories
so you can buy any accessory in lots of 3 and the shipping will come to $3 per item,
      don't know if this helps.

      • +2

Good price and speed but hate the CAP (just too easy to misplace)

        • +3

          yes the caps are annoying,
          very true
will advise the product management team of this,
          never thought of it before
          thanks

Does anyone know what time Harvey Normal Open tomorrow (27/12/10) at Liverpool?

    • -1

      Never mind…. found it

  • +1

there were a tonne today at Bondi, picked up 2, not a bad price, i just want a cheap solution to carry stuff around in my pocket, 4gigs doesnt cut it these days.

    • Note there were quite some also at JB hifi, but they could not match price (their price was $5X or $6X)…did not bother to ask to speak to the manager….Just went upstairs to get it from Harvey

  • I don't know how people are able to stand those write speeds… I recently got a Superfast 16gb USB 3.0 drive and even when operating in USB 2.0 mode, it writes at 35mb/s.

  • I could only find one 16Gb Lexar USB at HN Woden, ACT early afternoon yesterday (26Dec). Hundreds of USBs were all jumbled together in a big display bin. I bought the one 16Gb I found so probably none left. HN Woden store staff also reported that there were none left of the 1Tb portable disks for $99.

  • Alexandria Harvey Norman has Toshiba 16GB ones for $19 got 2 for myself :)

  • wow. HN Auburn. Had just a few left. got one for 16$.
Massive Crowd . took me 20 min to get to the counter.

There was a bunch of Samsung Story 2TB External for 99$.

  • sold out @ blacktown but they put up a sign saying ask a salesperson so u can be notified when more become available.. i didnt bother.. they had plenty of lexar 8gb for $13 and lexar/toshiba 4gb for $6

  • Got one of these today. They do have terrible speeds, particularly write speeds. I tested using ATTO, and got a peak write speed of 8mb, and read of around 15mb. That's about half the next slowest USB drive I tested

  • yep horrible write speed.

  • sort of defeats the purpose of the device if it takes ages to copy files to

  • My local HN was out of the $19 Lexars so they offered me Sonys for the same price (were marked at $59.95)

  • This is crazy. I formatted the drive 2nd time , now its showing 11GB only.
Reformatted another 5 times(using windows/macox/ Hp USB format tool. 11GB.
am I loosing my mind is it just a dodgy drive?

  • Harvey Norman @ North Ryde had plenty of 4GB Lexars. Only 16GBs were Verbatim, no idea how good they are but bought 2 anyway. Apparently I also got their last 1TB external for $99 and also last 100 DVD stack for $17.

    <3 Harvey today

    • they gave u the verbatim 16gb for $19??

      • Yeah, only bought 2 though.

        • hmm might try tomorrow

    • They were out of Lexars at Lismore so I also got Verbatims for $19.

They seem better than the Lexar: Read 21.4 MB/s, Write 7.8 MB/s

  • no specials left @ HN Liverpool. Was going to get 16Gb USB and 2TB Samsung but none left. Went to OW they won't do price match cos they haven't got the same product.

    • liverpool had 3 left and i was just there 5 mins ago. at first i asked the guy, and the system said they were sold out.. but somehow there suddenly was a box with 3 of them left

  • Got one. There were about 20 at HN Belmont if anyone's interested.

  • Would this be fast enough to use as a Xbox 360 Flash Drive?

    I bought a 16GB A-RAM and the Xbox won't accept it.

Any recommendations on reasonably priced 16GB Flash Drives that will work on Xbox 360?

  • In ACT at the Fyshwick store they had a couple of 2 TB drives left but heaps of 16 GB Lexar's as well as 16 GB Toshiba drives that too scanned at the same price. No 1 TB portables left.

    • Using it on my 4gb xbox, no problems atm!

  • Here is a good little program for checking speed of USB thumb drives.
I like it because it doesn't need to be installed.

    http://mikelab.kiev.ua/index_en.php?page=PROGRAMS/chkflsh_en

Am going to compare the test of the Sony's and Lexar's I bought from HN on Boxing Day with my trusty Sandisk Titanium stick.

    • Please post your results. like to see. Also got the sandisk Titanium 4G which is quite fast and solid built, pity no longer available in Aust.

      • Will do.

Just went through my collection and I have more drives than I thought. I have both a 4Gb and 16Gb Sandisk Cruzer Titanium, also a Kingston DataTraveler 4Gb.

I also have a 2Gb MSY special I bought years ago that should be fun to test :)

  • In ACT at the Fyshwick store noon today (28/12) they had about 200 of the 16 GB Lexar’s and 16 GB Toshiba drives that are being sold for same price of $19. No 1 TB portables left but will take up to 140 of these on back order.

  • would this USB stick be ok as a PVR device? Or is the write speed too slow?

    • what bitrate does your PVR record at?
Free to air high def signals are usually in the 12-18Mbps range.
The Lexar is reported as writing at 6 megabytes per sec which equates to 48 megabits per sec.
Answer - Yes it should be fine.

    Starts 26 Dec - Ends 16 Jan 11

Another LAME sale, sold out in City Cross/Woodville (1st day open from the long break today), no raincheck no substitution. Gepps Cross not taken phone call for stocks check (they said too busy want me to drive to store…WTF I would drive if they have stock, I don't want to drive 20-30 mins each way and to find out no stock). How is that for a service?
Basically they don't have many in stock for the sale as I had no luck with their 3 current deals: 1TB, 2TB & 16GB!

      Harvey Norman

      • Thanks for looking after us.
Just send an email to the address above.
        HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  • 16gb usb sold out at Nunawading, VIC

  • castle hill and bella vista sold out (inc the harddrives)

mt druit sold out but taking orders.. i got 2

  • +5

Ok, here are the results of my tests from today:

    MSY Rundisk 2Gb

    Sandisk Cruzer Titanium 4Gb

    Sandisk Cruzer Titanium 16Gb

    Kingston DataTraveler 4Gb

    Lexar Jumpdrive Retrax 4Gb

    Sony Microvault 16Gb

Looks like I should have bought more of the Sony's at $19 :-)

    • thx for the results. (just noticed by using the 16G Ti is much slower than the 4G Ti, but according to the result is much faster…sometimes depend on the method of testing and how you use it)

    • yeah u got really really lucky with the sony's.. i couldn't find any sony microvaults @ any of the HN's i went to

    • I got the same results with the Lexar 16GB as the 4GB you tested.
      16.7 read & 4.2 write.
I'm guessing not fast enough for XBOX360.
Oh well, still a great price.

      • Works fine on my xbox slim 4gb

    • pepitovfr, thanks for doing this report.
Can you suggest which of the above good for doing multiple files transfer, say at least hundred of files or more?
I had one from Toshiba before. It was ok just doing one single big file, but not multiple files. Thanks!

  • That sounds quite slow. I got around 25 read and 15 write with an A-RAM and the Xbox 360 still rejected it.

It actually said that it failed the data loss test but I assume that is due to speed problems.

    • Just got one for my 4gb xbox slim and works fine ATM

  • +1

    Sandisk Cruzer Contour 16GB
    26MB/sec Read
    20 MB/sec Write

The Contours are the most expensive of the Sandisk drives.

Most people confuse them with the Cruzer Titanium or the Sandisk Traveller

    :-)

  • I got the Toshibas - they any good?

  • There are still some of Lexar 16GB at Maribyrnong Branch (VIC) yesterday (like 10 - 15)

  • grabbed one at harvey norman oxley - still good 50 or so left :)

  • Used the Toshiba 16GB that I got from HN yesterday and it was writing at about 10MB/s. Not bad for this price.

  • how much were the toshibas?

    • $19… think they were replacements for the Lexars after those ran out of stock.

  • Umm so my Harvey was out of the Lexar and a salesperson showed me the Toshiba and said he could bring it down to $25 (from $59.95) which I took. Now seeing on here, people are getting those for $19. Is this something I should kick up a fuss about? Or is it a still a good deal?

    • I got my 16GB Toshiba's for $19 kick up a fuss I say :)

    • Kick up a fuss….
