Headset to Use While Mowing

Hi Audio experts,

I was wondering if there are wireless headsets (or can be wired to my phone) that I can use while mowing. I am on acreage and it takes me a whole day to do a round of mowing. It is very boring, and it would be great if I can listen to something during that time (rather than just talk to myself). I don't need to listen to music on it, but just want to hear lectures and people talking. Don't know if such things exist and what they cost, but price would be important too.

many thanks

Your best bet it probably with OzBargain's favourite noise cancelling headphones the Bose QuietComfort 35 II or the Sony WH-1000XM2. Alternatively you can get IEMs and use earmuffs over them, but this may be uncomfortable especially for the time periods you want to use them for.

    • Thanks for that! I guess looks like they can be a bit pricey, but good to know some suggestions.

      • I own the QC35, and I must say I'm quite impressed with it. Not that I bought it blindly of course… Just walk into any retailer that has one on demo and try out a few pairs and see which are comfortable.

As for noise cancelling, active noise cancelling tend to excel at "droning" noises, so should be perfect for you.

Another alternative you may not have thought of is cheap bunnings work earmuffs, with a separate in-ear bud-style wired earphones, if they will fit under them. Those active noise cancelling stuff like these https://www.bunnings.com.au/our-range/tools/hand-tools/safet… work much better than noise cancelling headphones I think. Just a thought.

Would you really use your $300 headphones for mowing the lawn for 8 hours?

You mean, would you really use $350 headphones to block out noise and listen to music over an extended period while doing something with a constant droning noise?
Isn't that exactly what these are designed for?

      • I was under the impression that OP was using a ride-on, in which case I don’t see an issue

You mean….Like earphones that came with your phone in the box??

(Not meaning to be rude here but what do you mean exactly?) And what's your budget? since price is important…

Sorry I mean something that I can still hear okay over the loud mowing sound. With the earphones that came with my Pixel, I cannot hear what the people are saying, even on max volume.

Buy a pair of earmuffs, they'll block out the noise and protect your hearing at the same time..
        Win Win!

You can find earmuffs with Bluetooth from hardware stores. I wouldn’t want to ruin expensive headphones with yard sweat, dirt and grass clippings!

    • thanks

When I used to cut grass all day I just used proper earmuffs w/ earbuds.

Please tell me you have a ride-on mower, and you're not actually pushing around a lawnmower…

    • Haha yes I do use a 42" ride-on. Fun a first but after 5 years it's become monotonous.

These are a cost effective corded ANC (active noise cancelling) headphone option.

Alternatively the earmuff + earbud option or bluetooth earmuffs will work.

If you have a mainly low frequency noise the active noise cancelling works best, if more midrange or high frequency earmuffs will do better.

    • Thanks I'll keep an eye out for the next aldi sale. Looks like earmuffs + earbuds is the simplest option so far.

I just use Bluetooth earphones with ordinary ear muffs from Bunnings.

I've also got these: https://www.huntinghaven.com.au/p/howard-leight-impact-sport…. These are active, you don't have to take them off when people are talking, but shuts off the sound when something loud happens (power tools in my case). These are wired to connect an MP3 player but there are Bluetooth ones.

When switched off they behave like ordinary ear protectors.

Naturally you'll want to get them from Amazon US for a more reasonable price.

Many different versions, I like those because they fold up.

    • Thanks will look into those

So you are after earmuffs I believe, not headsets. There are various types available from safety equippers and even bunnings, ranging from cheap 5 dollar jobs to expensive bluetooth-integrated units.

My 2 cents, 20 bucks or less for a decent pair and wear your earbuds underneath, wired or wireless, it doesn't really matter, the wires on most earbuds are soft enough not to cause pressure pain where they slip under the muffs.

    • thanks. that seems to be the cheapest option at the moment

These are designed for very noisy enviroments, they're basically a combination of industrial ear plugs and headphones:

ANSI-certified 27 dB Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) earplug headphones. This Bluetooth hearing protector is made for use in loud >environments, or when noise isolation is needed most. 100% OSHA compliant for use in the workplace

    Yes, Bluetooth headphones…..

Bose? Sonys? Just get ear muffs from Bunnings and use normal earphones.

My Bose noise cancelling QC's get a strange sound pop/clicking noise when there's excessively loud noise - eg whipper snipper / chainsaw etc. So probably not a good option for this. I reckon Might have even broken them by using them in this environment.

Better off with a decent pair of ear muffs and wireless ear bud.

Be careful with corded earphones and power tools - I once got mine caught on a bench drill and it pulled me in then whipped my face with the cord.

    • Thanks for the warning - sounds scary. Think I will try to stick with wireless then.

+1 to using in ear headphones with a simple ear muff over the top.

If you're looking to purchase some ANC headphones, please do not try to 'skimp out' and purchase a cheap unbranded option; you'll find yourself dissatisfied and likely to end up seeking out a more expensive product, thus wasting the money on your initial purchase. I recently purchased the Sony WH-1000XM2's (I purchased them blindly, as a risk) and am extremely happy with them. You can regularly find it for less than the RRP, in the mid $300 range which is more than worth it, in my opinion, for the return in sound quality and noice cancellation.

The only pair of ANC headphones that I would purchase other than the "high end staples" of BOSE and Sony would be the Plantronics Backbeat Pro 2. I had the original version which was exceptional, whilst the sequel was even better. Whilst not quite on the same tier as those staple options, they're certainly not far off at half the price.
